Proof of how stir crazy my husband has become after three weeks at home with a busted knee. He willingly went to the theater with me today. Having read Rick Riordan's mystery series and not the Percy Jackson books I went into it with no expectations other than looking forward to Kevin's scenes. I won't attempt a real analysis having only nominally retained any of my Greek mythology from school days. Having a soft spot in my heart for Nashville I was thrilled to see they used the Parthenon replica as one of the locations. Having toured that site and checked out some very worthwhile art in their galleries it was fun to think back to spending days in that park.
I enjoyed the general camaraderie of the three teen protagonists but agree that the chemical spark one wants from buddy plots in movies wasn't present. I wonder if that will develop as the actors mature and spend more time working together.
I wanted Percy's house at Camp Half Blood. That place was outstanding!
Catherine Keener was wasted in her few brief scenes though I was amused at the reason she put up with the lout she ended up marrying after Zeus decreed the gods shouldn't have contact with their human children. I also thought it was odd she knew how to enter Mt. Olympus considering as a human she probably didn't spend any time there.
I wish we'd seen more of the Gods in this go-round. And no, not just because I'd love to see more Poseidon, though I would. I found Sean Bean's star turn to be too brief and didn't feel we got quite enough of Hades and Persephone either. I love Rosario Dawson and found her sexy, prowling Persephone fun to watch. Hades as Mick Jagger was an interesting choice and one that worked, IMO.

I know I'm super late with this review but.. I have to agree with Leanne that most of my fave parts in the book were cut. I was talking to my friend's 10 year old today about the movie and he didn't like it because it was too different than the book LOL Though his brother who didn't read the book enjoyed it. I guess that is always the challenge of an adaptation. You have to be able to appeal to the core audience of the original work, while also gaining new interest. All in all I thought the movie was a fine effort. In some parts I thought the CGI could have been better, esp. after seeing Columbus' previous films. I wonder/hope the budget will be bigger for the next film for them to do those scene justice. I have to say that I agree with Sally that Poseidon was "dazzling" LOL Kevin as Poseidon just leapt off the screen for me. He brought a lot of depth to a character that has to be very distant and most of the time cold. It confused me that they wanted to change the time frame of when he met/left Sally and Percy, because I know in the book its totally different. I guess they wanted to portray how torn Poseidon was, etc. I also got to wonder what was Poseidon's pick up line when he met Sally? I mean did he just come right out and say that he was Poseidon? Or did he wait until their third or fourth 'date'? love how it just seems like a normal occurrance. I expect to see a "When Poseidon Met Sally" fan fiction somewhere on this site soon! So I am a Greek mythology buff, so one of the things I love about these books in general is how they secretly teach you about mythology, like Kevin mentioned. I already knew a lot from various university classes, and also from watching other films. But its always interesting to see them introduced in an interesting way. I thought to myself, "Oh so this is how Medusa would look like in the new millenium" LOL I liked the emphasis on technology in the film, if you noticed, they used various things like iPods, computers, etc. in their quest. It also reflects this digital/instant age that we are in. I think it goes a long with this essay written by Walter Benjamin called The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction. Where the theory is that at some point when a piece of art becomes iconic, such as in the level of the Mona Lisa, or even the Empire State Building (which we learn is actually the gateway to Mt. Olympus) that the aura (sense of awe) of the original work, actually is reproduced so much that the aura is broken. Basically meaning that the reproductions no longer need to depend on the original work, such as mythology, because as culture keeps reproducing them, they take on a separate interpretation. So you have the simultaneous aura meshing of the landmarks used in the film and all these figures of Greek Mythology, and on some level the city of New York itself. While many parts in the film are unrealistic such as how they manage to drive across country (are any of them even old enough?) and manage to hang out in a Casino for days (which they definately aren't old enough to do), I realize that it is meant to be sensationalistic and go along with the urgency of finding the pearls across the country. I really liked how mythological characters were worked into the film, the part with Medusa was really good, and I have to say if I were to picture Medusa as a woman of the millennium, that is how I'd picture her, in designer clothes, in disguise. Though I am not so sure sunglasses would curb the effect of her power. Uma Thurman was pretty good though I wish she had been in the film longer, it did not do her justice after seeing her in films like Kill Bill and knowing she's a great action actress. Other things: I really enjoyed Pierce Brosnan in the film, I didn't think he was mis cast at all like some reviewers claimed. Rosario Dawson was great as Persephone, as were the rest of the true Gods in the film. Seems like they really didn't use Melina Kanakaredes well at ALL. I think I would have liked to see more of her as Athena. I realize that was kind of the point, but if it would have meant less Poseidon I will gladly take what screentime they gave us. The friendship between Percy and his mates was portrayed well, though its obvious there will be a cat and mouse game with Annabeth and Percy as was through out the books. I also liked how they portrayed Sally and Percy, you believed they were close, but at the same time I fel tshe was underused as well. In spite of the film being kind of rushed, it was fairly good. I think/hope they will make the next one longer and that the CGI gets a little bit better. I once again enjoyed how Mythology was worked in, it will be interesting to see how much they introduce in the next film. I'm just glad the film showcases Kevin prominently, all my friends kids agreed that he was a great Poseidon. Looks like Kevin is gaining a new fan base
