GREY’S ANATOMY “Disarm” Season 7 Episode 11 – This week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy finds the staff at Seattle Grace once again dealing with the aftermath of a mass shooting, although not on their own turf. Those that thought they would falter stood strong, while others were unexpectedly disarmed. The writers are definitely trying to milk the success of the shocking and engaging season finale involving the shooting at Seattle Grace. Unfortunately, the attempts are becoming tiring and seem far reaching. How is is that Seattle Grace receives every major mass trauma in all of Portland and, thereby, always runs out of room in the ER? Time to get a bigger ER, folks. However, I will set all of that aside to scream “Yang is back!” That is all I kept saying from the moment I realized she would jump inside that ambulance to crack that boy’s chest. Did anyone really think the doors would open and she would not be in there? While giving credit to Derek and the fishing trip, I think it really was seeing a mass tragedy not involving her that drew Yang back to her field. It looks like she is really back this time, too. If she can stay and operate on the shooter, I think she can do almost anything. Speaking of the shooter, was anyone else disappointed in Avery for walking out and refusing to help the shooter? I know that it would be difficult and I cannot even imagine being put in that position, however you are a doctor, as Teddy said. It was pleasantly unexpected to see Avery and his judgments disarmed by Karev of all people. Karev gave such wonderful insight with a mere few words about his brother. This episode the spotlight was definitely on Alex. Not only did he sway Avery with his words, but he saved a teenage girl’s leg. Does anyone else wish that Stark would be sent to Malawi in place of Arizona? He hardly seems to want to be a doctor, let alone a good one. Despite the darker moments, like Bailey almost losing it when she thought another Charles was going to die, the episode also had some bright moments. How cute were Sloan and Little Grey together? It was beautiful how touched she was by him at the end and I was happy that she told him how she felt. If only Callie and Arizona could come together again. It definitely made me think about how Callie felt when she told Arizona that she had to come all the way across the world for her because that is where she left her without a second glance. Leave it to Callie to deliver such a powerful blow. I loved how excited Karev was that they were able to save the girl’s leg and I laughed at Arizona’s yelling “Body block him, Karev!” Given how strange Stark is, I am surprised he didn’t threaten Alex with the saw he had in his hand. Overall, I thought this was a good episode, though I do wish they would move past the shooting and back to the medical aspect of the show. Those plots seem to have been lacking lately. What do you think? Did you like this episode of Grey’s Anatomy? Are you also wondering how many mass traumas one hospital can get? I was really worried as we were breaking this story in the writer’s room that there wasn’t any room for levity in an episode about a bunch of college kids getting shot up – an episode that was designed to be the end of a 13 episode arc that began with ep. 623 last season. Bringing our cast of characters full circle from their trauma is no small task – but we felt like it was time to finally move past the shooting, to let them heal, to turn the page. And we thought, what better way to do that than to have our people save the lives of the next generation of gunshot victims. But, again, there was the problem of finding levity. Which could also be called Defying Gravity, a song with which my 3 year old has recently become obsessed – but I digress. The levity came when someone had the idea of the Alex/Stark OR stand-off. We laughed our asses off while we ran around the room acting out Alex’s wrestler stance, “I’m ALL STATE, BABY!” And I have to say, Justin Chambers and Peter MacNicol delivered in spades. I was on the set for the shooting of the scene, and in the early rehearsals they were actually wrestling which was hilarious, but, we decided, unlikely. Often, we the writers are at odds with the medical personnel who work so hard to make our show look, feel and sound like a real hospital. Wrestling in the OR, as hard as it made us laugh, was not a thing we thought we’d get by them. The other thing they really struggled with was the idea of a MASH unit in the hospital. But they rose to the occasion and only hated us a little more than usual as we passionately shouted, “No, we don’t care if people would just be shipped to other hospitals! Pretend the other hospitals are full! Pretend there was a GIANT earthquake AND a massive shooting ON ONE DAY! Then what would happen???” They humored us and I don’t know about you but I thought the MASH unit was bad-ass. I was sad that because of time limitations we had to cut a really funny scene in which April ran the crap out of that MASH unit, barking orders at Stark and the others, but I loved how it all came off – director Debbie Allan was INCREDIBLE in bringing it to life. I have to keep this short because it’s late and I’m hard at work on upcoming episodes. Thanks, as always, for watching. And Happy New Year!! As they said in Spinal Tap… This one goes to 11! xxoo Krista www.greyswriters.com

www.buddytv.com/articles/greys-anatomy/greys-anatomy-fan-columnist-co-38999.aspxDid you ever wish you could have a do-over? A chance not only to do something better the second time around but with the benefit of hindsight and experience. That's the blessing the doctors at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital received in "Disarm," yet another wonderful outing in Grey's Anatomy's triumphant seventh season. The writers have been walking a tricky tightrope since this story arc began a full 13 episodes ago with the season 6 finale, "Sanctuary" and "Death and All His Friends." Yet "Disarm" shares many common traits with those excellent episodes. It was gripping, even harrowing, without being exploitative. It was both moving and compelling while managing to be neither cloying nor overwrought. Most importantly, it gave the entire ensemble the chance to shine while simultaneously moving the story along and developing the characters. The Twisted Sisters and the Men Who Married Them I've commented often that the presence of Meredith, Derek, Cristina and Owen at the forefront of the show this season is a big reason for its resurgence. Once again, this quartet was at its best last night as both Meredith and Cristina made significant emotional progress in the aftermath of the shooting at the hospital. Meredith found herself completely empathetic with a "wife in the waiting room" and finally acknowledged, both to herself and to Derek, that she, too, was severely traumatized by what happened all those months ago. She demanded and received his attention and support. In other news, Cristina returned to surgery in a major way after being on-the-scene of the college shooting, doing an emergency thoracotomy in the field and scrubbing in to assist for the surgery. She's back. My only concern in all of this is that, although Meredith and Cristina appeared to reconcile at episode's end, is that they never really talked about their problems. Is moving on in this way a sign that their friendship is truly back on track or have they merely swept some very important issues under the rug? Owen Hunt had quite the day as well, both personally and professionally. I loved how supportive he was of Cristina every step of the way. He gently reminded her as she entered the hospital that her staying on this case would require going into an OR, but then backed right down when he saw that was what she truly wanted. He also checked on her despite the chaos in the hospital that day and made sure her comeback surgery wasn't interrupted, even when OR space was at a premium and it was revealed that her patient was the shooter. Oh! And did I mention that due to that lack of space he constructed a MASH unit on the premises and oversaw the trauma catastrophe like the pro he is, losing no patients in the process? I love him, and, random aside, the little morning scene between him and Cristina was the cutest thing ever. The Rest of the GangMeanwhile, as the entire staff rallied in the face of this latest crisis, there was a lot happening. Mark and Lexie reconciled with Lexie even telling Mark that she loves him. Good for you, Mexie fans. I know you're ecstatic and you've earned this. Callie still won't give Arizona the time of day, telling her that while Arizona may have come back to the relationship, Callie has not. Mark my words, things are going to get worse before they get better on that front before those two crazy kids finally get back together. Teddy was a good mentor under difficult circumstances. She supported Cristina completely while teaching Jackson what it means to be a professional even when you don't feel like it. Ditto Alex Karev who continues to rock it out in pediatrics. He literally body blocked an enraged Dr. Stark from amputating a patient's leg unnecessarily and gave Jackson his second lesson of the day in compassion for those who don't deserve it. It was great to see The Chief being The Chief in all of his Chief-ness (am I the only one digging his bromance with that cop?), and apparently even God knows better than to mess with Bailey. I wish we'd seen more April but according to the show's blog, there was a great scene of her commanding the MASH unit that had to be cut for time. Pity. There was enough time for Teddy and Henry. Whoops! Did I say that out loud? Moving on ... The next all-new episode of Grey's Anatomy, "Start Me Up," airs next Thursday, Jan. 13 on ABC.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Cristina’s back! And, boy, did we miss her. On ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” last night, a campus shooting rampage left about two dozen injured and triggered horrible memories for the Seattle Grace staffers, who still carry the scars of last season’s epic hospital massacre. Cristina (Sandra Oh) ended up on campus as the wounded were being taken away, and as we discovered later, jumped into an ambulance and cracked a guy’s chest open. Yes! This is what we had been waiting for for months - the return of our confident, capable surgeon. She had found her mojo again. She even assisted in the surgery and stayed around when she learned her critically ill patient was actually the shooter. She, unlike some of her associates, had no problem upholding her oath as a doctor. (I’m not calling anyone out….but I’m just sayin’….) Also good last night: Alex (Justin Chambers) body-blocking that ridiculous turd of a surgeon was about to hack off a young woman’s leg. When did Alex become such an adult? It’s been a nice evolution for the character, who needs more story. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) yelled at God for killing (momentarily, anyway) her young patient. Hey, if I were God, I wouldn’t argue with Bailey. Derek (Patrick Dempsey) came to realize that Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) had been altered by her experience months ago, that she, too, was just as much a victim as Derek and Cristina during that shooting rampage - she had just held it together better (my view). And Cristina and Meredith started to get their friendship on track. Very good. I do wonder if there will be some problems between Cristina and Owen (Kevin McKidd) down the road - she did marry him at her lowest point. I like this couple, though. It’s one of “Grey’s” better pairings. Not so good: Susan Ruttan (”L.A. Law”) as the shooter’s mother. She was unconvincing in the part. Maybe it was the dialogue. Her scenes just didn’t work. Sad story: Callie’s (Sara Ramirez) continued rebuff of Arizona (Jessica Capshaw). C’mon, what’s up with that? The woman gave up a prestigious medical fellowship, flew back from Africa and has professed her undying love. Drop the beeyatch routine already. And next week looks as if the frost is only to get colder between the two. What did you think? Did you miss “Grey’s”? Are you happy that the show is back? www.bostonherald.com/blogs/entertainment/love_that_tv/?p=424&srvc=home&position=recent

Cristina Yang back in surgery on Grey's Anatomy 'Disarm' recap
The opening moments of "Grey's Anatomy" wrap up many of the questions we have from the last episode before the holiday break in "Adrift and at Peace". Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) and her husband Owen (Kevin McKidd) wake up together and Cristina decides she's going to sight see in Seattle and Owen gets phone call from Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) to come and be her witness at the courthouse because she was getting married. Teddy marries Henry (Scott Foley) in a quick uneventful ceremony. We see Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) and Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) snuggled up together, so happy the two of them are back together. I don't think either of them have been happy since they broke up last season. Callie walks out her front door to find Arizona sitting in the hall, Callie still does not want to have anything to do with her. At the hospital, everyone is gathered in the great room at the hospital watching the television coverage of a school shooting where a gunman had opened fire on the students and teachers. This took them all back to the shooting they survived just a few months ago.
While Yang is about to find the space needle which she aparently has never bothered to notice, she see's three ambulances speed by. She follows and ends up in the middle of the aftermath of the shooting. Cristina sees a young man being loaded onto a stretcher and she knows that he needs her surgical skills to live. She hesitates only a moment and then we are back at Seattle Grace Hospital.
As the ambulances are unloading, the doors of the last one open and there is Cristina with her hand inside the boys chest. She and Teddy end up saving his life. Karev disagrees with the pediatrics attending, Dr. Stark (Peter MacNicol) who is going to amputate a 15 year olds leg instead of taking steps to save it. Arizona is watching from the gallery and Karev calls to her for help. She gets into an argument with him, he refuses to listen so she tells Karev to block him. Meanwhile Arizona runs to Chief Webber and gets him to grant her privlidges at the Seattle Grace again. He knows they need all hands on deck so he says yes. Arizona then passes Callie in the hall and asks her to help reconstruct the young mans leg. They arrive in the operating room to a comedic scene where Karev is physically blocking Dr. Stark from using the saw and amputating the leg. Arizona takes over with the Callies help and they save the boy and the leg.
Arizona begged Callie to forgive her, "I am so deeply in love with you, I'll apologize to you every day if that's what you need me to, I traveled across the world to get to you." Callie said, "You traveled across the world to get away from me and didn't look back. You want to be back in this relationship, but I don't. I'm not sure how long Callie will be able to hold resist Arizona, she does love her deeply, but the hurt and humiliation she felt when Arizona told her not to come with her is deeper than we thought. The fans want them back together, and I think they will reconcile before the end of the season, but it's going to take awhile.
By the end of the episode, out of 26 patients from the shooting, the doctors of Seattle Grace saved all of them. Weber say's he'll hire Arizona back but she has to be under the evil Dr. Stark who storms out of the O.R. observation room where Cristina and Teddy save the shooter. Cristina is back, and all is right with Meredith's world again.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 7 Ep. 11 Recap: Another Shooter, More Pep Talks
“Grey’s Anatomy” has finally returned from the winter break, with this week offering the first new chapter in the lives of the surgeons at Seattle Grace. But will Cristina (Sandra Oh) ever return to work? And will the delicious Scott Foley continue to guest star?
Episode 11 of Season 7 began as many have recently: In the bedroom of Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey), and at the beginning of an argument. In the last episode, Derek took Cristina on a fishing trip—much to the disapproval of Meredith and Cristina’s new husband, Owen (Kevin McKidd). Meredith was grilling Derek on the details of the trip, as she was not satisfied with his tale of the get-away, only to interrupt the fight and declare she’s ovulating. (If you aren’t aware that Meredith and Derek are trying to conceive, you must be new to “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 7.) “You stole my best friend,” Meredith accused, prompting Derek to ask if they were going to “do this” or not. When she replied that she was too mad to look at him, he countered by telling her to roll over. Apparently, the trouble-in-paradise theme is going to continue for a few more episodes.
The scene then jumped into the bedroom of Cristina and Owen, who seemed to be enjoying married life much more than Meredith and Derek that morning. “You look different—you seem better,” Owen observed while cuddling with his bride. Cristina said she did feel better, which provided a nice bit of foreshadowing. Later in Episode 11, Cristina found herself on the scene of a school shooting. Seattle Grace would see 26 patients that day, and Cristina would arrive in an ambulance after cracking open the shooter’s ribcage while en route to the ER. Teddy (Kim Raver) and Owen met her outside, and were appropriately shocked to find her elbow-deep in a patient’s chest cavity. By the end of this week’s episode, Cristina would find herself back in the OR.
This week’s “Grey’s Anatomy” mandatory medical cases came in the form of several spotlighted patients within the 26 shooting victims. Chief Webber (James Pickens Jr.) delivered an emotional, uplifting speech to the Seattle Grace team of doctors just before the ambulances arrived: “Our own trauma is fresh, and we’re gonna have feelings today and there’s no shame in that. What I want to say is, what we went through six months ago, they’re going through right now. Which makes them our brothers and sisters—which makes them fellow travelers—which makes them our own. So to the very best of our ability, we’re going to do our work first—and you’re going to have your feelings later.”
Considering this season of “Grey’s Anatomy” has been all about the main characters’ recovery after the shooter and murder spree of the Season 6 finale, it’s no wonder that the staff responded rather emotionally to the victims and the situation. When it was discovered that Teddy, Cristina and Avery (Jesse Williams) were all working to save the life of the shooter himself, Avery led a small rebellion which lead to numerous members of the surgical team leaving the operating room. Cristina had already committed to helping with the surgery, and she later told Teddy that the decision to stay—which Teddy assumed had been difficult—had actually been easy for her to make, after all. It seems safe to assume that Episode 11 marks the official return of Cristina Yang to Seattle Grace.
Meredith and Derek continued to clash throughout the show, and the turmoil came to a shouting match in the OR after Meredith insisted on visiting the patient’s wife for yet another update. Derek couldn’t understand why she seemed suddenly so preoccupied with comforting the woman; she countered with: “Since I was the wife in the waiting room, Derek. I mean honestly, do you think you and Cristina are the only ones who’ve ever been through a trauma?” He attempted to dismiss her point, but Meredith continued, laying it all out on the table in front of everyone in the OR. “You and Cristina are so busy supporting each other, have you ever noticed I went through a trauma too? I was the wife in the waiting room, Derek. And it’s so hard to be the wife in the waiting room—so hard, that I walked into the OR while the shooter had a gun to you and told him to shoot me instead. That’s how hard it is to be the wife in the waiting room.” She successfully drove her point home, and by the end of the episode Derek had apologized, and finally started to take her trauma seriously.
Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) was waiting for Callie (Sara Ramirez) outside her apartment on the morning of the shooting, much to the disapproval of Callie. In Episode 10, Arizona returned from Africa to try and win back Callie’s heart only to have a door shut promptly in her face. This week’s episode didn’t go any better for her, and Callie continued to thwart her attempts to reconcile; she even went so far as to forbid Arizona from holding her “hostage” in the OR as the two worked together to save a 15 year old girl’s leg. This followed an explosive scene, in which Arizona and Alex (Justin Chambers) teamed-up against the horrible Dr. Stark after he determined that the patient's leg wasn’t worth saving. Chief Webber informed Arizona that she could rejoin the staff at Seattle Grace, but that she’d have to work under Dr. Stark—a terrible fate, to be certain. "You flew a whole world away without ever looking back--you just left," Callie explained calmly later that episode. "And you came back today--but I didn't. Whatever else has happened, that hasn't changed."
I’m sure I wasn’t the only “Grey’s Anatomy” fan to rejoice upon seeing Teddy actually go through with the wedding to Henry (guest star Scott Foley), the dying patient in desperate need of medical insurance. At the end of the show—and the overwhelming day—Teddy met Henry at Joe’s bar for a drink. He requested a toast in lieu of the wedding cake, and she explained that she’d spent the day saving a terrible person. He countered that she had saved his life that morning, with their wedding, and she seemed to soften even more to the handsome fellow. Teddy wasn’t the only one enjoying romance this week; Mark (Eric Dane) and Lexie (Chyler Leigh) spent a good portion of Episode 11 kissing, and Lexie even dropped the L-word bomb at the end of the show.
Bailey (Chandra Wilson) was a source of inspiration, motivation and reality again in Episode 11, as she has been in many episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 7. At one point, she and several other doctors were struggling to resuscitate a flat-lining patient, and in true Bailey fashion she demanded to the patient that he come back to his body. When that didn’t work, she looked skyward, and declared: “You Bastard! You better send this boy back right now!” Alex managed to get his heart beating again, and Bailey apologized for the “bastard thing.”
Ultimately, “Grey’s Anatomy” Episode 11 was a lesson in unity; from the classmates who launched a candlelight visual outside Seattle Grace, to the manner in which the doctors themselves overcame diversity to work together to save all 26 patients. Cristina managed to find the motivation to return to medicine, Meredith and Derek learned more about each other, and many of the surgeons learned to overlook their personal opinions and save a life as doctors instead of as ordinary people. Avery experienced this first-hand after he walked out the OR, when he found himself talking to the heartbroken mother of the shooter. No one had updated her on the boy’s condition, and Avery swallowed his stubbornness and found compassion to explain the situation to the woman. The writers just keep bringing the bittersweet, heart-wrenching scenes which “Grey’s Anatomy” is famous for, and Season 7 stands to be one of the most uprooting, emotional and altering yet.

"Rejoice" and "Romance" to describe the Teddy/Henry wedding? Seriously? All I saw was an elaborate business transaction

TROY -- Troy High School graduates who are also fans of the show "Grey's Anatomy" may have thought they heard a familiar tune during Thursday's episode. It was about doctors trying to save college students after an accident on campus, and the college community comes to the hospital to hold a vigil. The song they sing during the vigil sounds a bit like the Troy High School alma mater -- and that's because the show's head writer and executive producer is a graduate. The class of 1989's Krista Vernoff told the Troy Record she wrote the episode as a tribute to her years at Troy High www.cbs6albany.com/news/troy-1281917-high-school.html
