Chief: "I'm trying to look at Bailey's Teets on the internet." Owen: "Sir, I think you mean Tweets." Chief: "Yeah, well, whatever..." Owen: "No, I think you need to get that one right." Slightly paraphrased but LMAO! Best lines of the night without question. And the look on Kevin/Owen's face in the background was priceless. A few thoughts about the episode. I don't care if Tweeting the surgery ultimately saved the patient's life. It could just as easily have jeopardized the patient. Personally, I wouldn't want cell phones or any other hand held device in an OR when I'm on the table. People should be focused on the task at hand fcol. Unfortunately, this is only the beginning of that storyline I fear. Callie is classically insecure. I would say the obgyn went above and beyond what she had to do. I'm not sure I buy how Callie and Az are now getting back together either. It seems natural and yet it doesn't. Jury is still out. Cris tricking Avery...oh that was the Cristina we all know and love. That said, I think she was sincere when speaking to the patient. Much warmer than she would have been back in s5, pre Owen. Her actions made her look good but I think, hope, that they were secondary to the benefit to the patient. Ditto on the growth of Alex Karev. I liked that he walked away knowing that Meredith was the best one to work on the trial. I feel bad for Lexie. Mark is the proverbial bull in a china shop. He really needs to stop thrashing around. A couple of notes regarding Kevin's directing choices. - I liked the transitions during the ending montage. Sliding from one location to the next thus giving the viewer windows into the personal lives of our characters.
While this was not my favorite episode of the season it did have something that has seemed a bit lacking lately. There was a lot of emotion on the screen. Excitement, fear, panic, joy and wonder were all on display. I think Kevin teased some nuances from these actors who are all very comfortable in their roles and perhaps just a shade lazy because of that familiarity.
- What did you think of Kevin's prime time directorial debut? How did he do, overall? I don't know a lot about directing so I tried hard to see differences from this episode and its predecessors. Aside from the above nothing jumps out. The episode flowed smoothly without shots that were too abrupt or any obvious consistencies in performance. In my very humble opinion, nicely done Kevin. - What was your favorite thing about this episode (line/character/scene/storyline etc)? And your least favorite? The scene between Owen and the Chief was my fave hands down. The whole Tweeting thing just ticked me off. - What would you change, if you could? See above comments. - What would you rate the episode out of 10? In terms of forwarding the story arcs of s7 I would say a solid 7. In terms of enjoyment, a 5. - Will you watch this episode again? Mainly to study Kevin's choices in shot composition, blocking, etc.

Callie is classically insecure. I would say the obgyn went above and beyond what she had to do. I'm not sure I buy how Callie and Az are now getting back together either. It seems natural and yet it doesn't. Jury is still out. Yep - Callie's gotten almost afraid of her own shadow when it comes to relationships and who she is and now there's a baby in her uterus. Freak out was coming, no question. Liked how Arizona said 'my baby' and showed how surprised she was to hear herself say it. Didn't like how they went from that to disrobing. Seems a few more words needed to be said before that happened but so be it. And we so know it's not going to be as easy as this after all that's been said and done between them. Cris tricking Avery...oh that was the Cristina we all know and love. That said, I think she was sincere when speaking to the patient. Much warmer than she would have been back in s5, pre Owen. Her actions made her look good but I think, hope, that they were secondary to the benefit to the patient. Yep - after what Avery said he deserved Cris' retaliation. And I agree that when it was just her with the patient she was heartfelt. The scene with both Avery and Teddy standing over her shoulder showed stereotypical surgeon Cristina but with the patient she was sharing her own reality, her own feelings. Her words maybe reflected her perception of Owen watching and waiting for her to heal or what it was like for her, S.5 and/or S.6, watching Owen heal? I like that there's room for snarky Cris and the Cris who can say 'not everything I do is about competition' and mean it.
And I found it interesting that it was easier for Avery to blame what he perceived as Cristina's game playing - both in terms of talking to the patient on her own AND her actions in the resident's lounge - for why he didn't get to scrub in rather than his own behavior. Teddy may have joked about them acting like rabid dogs but I think her horrified 'you had to go there' comment to Avery went over his head completely. Ditto on the growth of Alex Karev. I liked that he walked away knowing that Meredith was the best one to work on the trial. I liked seeing Alex be able to step up outside of peds, though I'm not sure Mer is the best one to work with Derek. She may understand the disease but can she be a clinician with those patients? And can Derek see beyond her to the patients? I feel bad for Lexie. Mark is the proverbial bull in a china shop. He really needs to stop thrashing around. Hated that Mark thought secondarily of Lexie all along, both in his a.m. scene with Callie and later in his apartment with Lexie. He couldn't actually say the words to Lexie, just looked at her hoping she wouldn't sock him in the nose. (Idle wondering...at what point in that Mark Lexie dinner did Arizona sneak over for Callie's belongings to start to move her back in?) Also - I liked that Valentine's Day in the promo seems to bring at least a Cristina and Owen kiss which is a heck of a lot more than we got last year!

I'm not a directing guru, however I agree with rural that I saw a lot more emotion from the actors in this ep than previous - Arizona was more authentic this ep than say the last ep when she was told about the baby. Even Mark didn't seem as robotic as usual this ep. We all know Kev is ace at bringing emotion to his scenes; can't help but think he's also ace at bringing it out in others as a director??\
I also found it was smoother than some other eps....say compared to the ep with the school shooter which seemed to jump around a bit too much. not sure if that more to do with Kev's directing or the edit team?
The tweeting in the OR makes me nervous - I would not want that going down during my surgery - but apparently Bailey gets patient consent. I think a tweeter in the OR gallery would be mopre appropriate.
Fav scenes were Chief and Owen and Cris and Mer in the locker room.
This ep didn't take me on a roller coaster ride but it was good, solid ep.

The episode was OK. But I think, I prefer Kevin on the other side of the camera. I don't understand how they got so quickly from Callie's being sure she doesn't want Arizona in her life, apartment etc. to the fact, that she hopes Arizona is in this with her. Is it all because of the baby? Freaking out was probably coming, but she is a doctor and should know better about the heartbeat and the possible bleeding. I also don't buy Arizona's "my baby" the first time she mentions it - she never wanted to have kids. "our baby" as an acceptance would have been more suitable.
As for other SLs - clinical trial was nothing special to take so much screen time. Derek not wanting Mer to work with him on that, is to me like he knows for sure Mer will have Alzheimer's as well.
Twitting during the surgery is not appropriate from my point of view, besides it was the only thing Lexie was doing during the surgery - looked more like a lecture for her, since she could have assisted instead. But maybe it is a way to find new treatment for the patient as well, I don't know.
Owen/Chief moment was awesome.
Cristina was in her element with Avery. Soft and caring Cristina with the patient reminded me of the ep in S6. with the girl, whose mother died. Sandra Oh/Cristina was my favourite in this ep.

I just realised that I never responded in this thread. It's been an incredibly hectic week.
I will try and come back and write a proper review or at least answer the questions but for now let me chime in and say that I thought Kevin did an outstanding job of directing. I have to confess that I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for when it comes to direction but I loved the way the shots were framed, the transitions in and out of them and what Kevin as director managed to get out of each of the actors.
The only downside to this episode as far as Kevin is concerned was that we didn't get more of him in front of the camera. But perhaps if he continues to direct and grows more comfortable with it he will be able to strike a better balance between working both on and off screen in the same episode.

finally got to see this episode actually it was more fun following the live blog than watching ;D and Im referring to the storyline which wasnt great. As I have no experiencing criting Directors the only compliment I can make is that it didnt feel like a novice it pretty much felt like I was watching any regular episode of Grey's so I personally think he did very well ... way to go Kevin Alzheimer is a bit of a yawn SL and Im not really to taken with the whole baby trio thing but at least Cris was on top form LOL
