Duchovlet, I thought I read an interview somewhere of the writer/director where he basically said the end was supposed to be ambiguous and the viewer can take it whichever way they choose.
I don't have the proper DVD though, so haven't heard the commentary.

Yes I have the dvd and Richard Jobson says point blank that Frankie dies. It is sad but I also give kudos for a non-Hollywood ending. 16 Years is so vividly real and that's one of the things I love about it. Life is never tied up with a neat little bow and Frankie's death would leave a person like Mary with unanswered questions that she can never satisfy. The same is true of anyone who looses a loved one to violence.

I love non-hollywood endings. Its typical in cinema that is international as opposed to american because american movies tend to shift toward making the audience happy in the end, or have some kind of resolution. While I find that a lot of British and Canadian movies tend to have deep struggles with identity which are not always cheerful, but then again they don't have to be. Rural you might like some films by Atom Egoyan, he's a Canadian director has a new film out called Adoration its really good.

Yes, I've read that too. You can think either he lives or he dies. Moreover, it's a story only based on a true life, but very different from it. According to me, a beautiful movie becomes perfect if its end makes me feel better. I don't mean an happy end at any cost. For example in The Gladiator his death is an happy end for me! In 16 years, instead, in that moment, Frankie wants to live and hope again in a change of life.

Went and picked up a used copy of the movie in this really cool music/video store in the artsy part of town. So 2 awesome finds...KMK movie to watch and a great spot to find less maintstream movies.
So of course I had to watch it right away. Have no willpower when it comes to KMK. I am glad that I read some of what was said here first so that I was prepared for the more unusual/artistic/poetic style of the movie. It definitely has a unique style to it that won me over.
The narration by KMK was great. I could listen to his voice all night.
As for the final scene, he doesn't fight back, so even though he is being beaten to death, he still chooses the better life by refusing to participate in to the violence again. Redemption. Tragic. Wow.

LOL! Well, now he'd not even say f..k ! But everything he has done was right in order to promote that kind of movie and attract teenagers.
----------- I adore the first part of the film when Kevin is speaking.
"Some times for some people, Things don't work out as they might have Hoped. Hope is A strange thing, A currency for people who Know they're losing. The more fimiliar you are with hope the less beautiful it becomes. This is A story about hope, Hope and desire, A dream of an extraordinary world where Angels watch over you as storm clouds gather. Some times for some people things don't work out as they might have hope."
"I have always had a strange feeling about Love. It seemed tricky, Happiness and Sadness, Ugly and Beautiful, Real and Unreal. One thing I've always known, though is that I have wanted to be around love quietly not to much just enough to make my heart happy. It doesn't have to sing just smile A little, Smile at the world. Love is greedy sometimes when things don't work out as you hoped. Love becomes A Dangerous thing, Scary, Violent, Cold , Cold like the Moon. But today it's warm like the breeze."

That voiceover, is one of my favourite features of the film. And the way everything in the background has this solemn stillness about it. So brilliant.

I've just finished watching it.... I won't say anything about the performances, the story, the pictures, the words, the songs .... I just feel an urgent need to go out ... I don't know where in a park maybe.... I just need to decrease the emotionnal level that make my hands shaking while I'm writing this...

I understand you. A very moving movie. Maybe my favourite, even if I usually don't like violent movie with no happy end (but I always think that he'll not die in that occasion: as I can say for Lucius Vorenus, I never saw him closing his eyes!!).
You have changed the sexy avatar Owen with the avatar of Frankie Mac!! Touched in the deep by Frankie!! LOL

After this movie , I just felt totally stupid with my (gorgeous) avatar... so off the subject! This movie is a little jewel To be honest: I don't know just now if my impression is given by a wonderful performance from kevin or by all in the movie. It's probably both! Now I'm just hoping that Kevin will find another "precious case" to shine !! Even If I really enjoy what he is doing now and even if he is really good.. he deserves so much better : Sorry if you don't agree....it's just my point of view
Now I'm going to find a way to write to the Coen brothers... to beg them to take Kevin in their next movie ;D

LOL A very poetic movie and Kevin is great! Well, a character with a PTSD is very interesting, but obviously we all hope the best for Kevin, even for the future movies, because he deserves interesting and "important" characters!

Lol I suppose...Yes: I have been touched in deep ! I don't know if PTSD is interesting or not (as a character story, not as an issue ... obviously!) , "ordinary" story can be very interesting too. I'm a fan of ordinary stories of not so ordinary people... ;D Seriously, he deserves better than being cut by ad every 5 minutes....

In a tv show (taking a part one like Journeyman, in which he was the absolute protagonist) it's normal to have roles not too much long in every episode. Only in a movie with a leading and interesting role (like in 16 years of alcohol) we could see him so much as we'd like to. I think that, a part "Poseidon" and the killer in Bunraku, the next other roles should be very satisfying for us!
Owen is a very interesting character, but in Grey's Anatomy even Mer (the only leading role) has a part long as other actors' parts.

;D I have to admit that for me in the last years it's difficult to find a character that I don't like, but I'd like to see him as a protagonist of a movie at the same time romantic and "committed"/important as 16 years of alchohol!!! Maybe "Dylan" could be the right one, if there is a love story!
