Grey's Anatomy's Shonda Rhimes: Cristina and Owen "Absolutely" Still Love Each Other May 23, 2013 01:01 PM ET by Natalie Abrams Calzona fans weren't the only ones hurting after the Grey's Anatomy season finale.
Once again, Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) seemingly broke up — but this time it was a somewhat amicable split. Realizing Owen would always regret not having children, Cristina decided to walk away from him in the closing moments of the episode, with Owen only calling after her instead of running after her.
"She did walk away and he didn't walk after her, which I thought was very interesting," executive producer Shonda Rhimes told reporters following the finale. "I love that last shot where he's like, 'This isn't over,' which is what he was saying, but he was not following her, and Owen is always sort of following her. I feel like that was a very definite moment for them."
As much as those C/O fans cursed the inevitable, Cristina and Owen were destined to go down this path again eventually. The duo previously broke up after Cristina had an abortion, which Owen had been against. So it seemed only natural that getting them back together in what has been a decently healthy relationship — in that they avoided conflict at all costs this season aside from the hospital sale — would lead them back to the topic of children once again. It was something Rhimes even foretold earlier in the season.

Matt's inside line - tvline.com/2013/06/20/castle-orphan-black-greys-anatomy-suits-spoilers/I really want Hilarie Burton to come back to Grey’s Anatomy. I find her character a lot more interesting than all the interns combined. Is there any chance she will come back ? –Cris If you know me at all (raise your hand if you remember the time Hil tried to slow dance with me on the Tree Hill set?), you know it pains me to report that, after snooping around some, I’m seeing no signs (yet) that lustful Dr. Lauren will be back.

Ask Matt -
Question: So it's reported that the four interns on Grey's Anatomy were promoted to series regulars. To put this nicely, GA fans are furious about the additions. We feel like a cast of 15 people is way too bloated and will take away screen time from the cast members we love. Not to mention that fans just didn't fall in love with the characters or actors playing them. It also doesn't make sense that Eric Dane was cut from GA because of budget issues, but they have enough money for four more cast members? Why couldn't they have just promoted them to recurring characters? Why promote all four, why not just one or two? ABC and Shonda Rhimes know fans don't like them. Does ABC think these four interns will be able to carry on the show after Season 10 if Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey and Sandra Oh leave the show? Because those interns aren't attracting any fans, so that's not happening. Any thoughts? — BP Matt Roush: I wouldn't get all that worked up. With the exception of Jo (Camilla Luddington), depending on how her relationship with Alex develops, they're still basically glorified background players at this point. I wouldn't expect them to take over the show. They certainly haven't shown any signs of such potential. But in the life of the series, a new intern class needs to be established, and unless this group was going to be replaced by an entirely new batch next season (unlikely), securing their services makes business if not creative sense. Like the new kids on Glee, it's impossible for these new characters to have the impact of the original core regulars, and they aren't a very inspiring crew, I agree. The one thing that won't happen is for Grey's Anatomy to continue with these characters as the engine of the ensemble. Should Meredith, Derek and Cristina no longer be around, neither will the show. At least I hope not. Question: Big fan of Grey's Anatomy, and really enjoyed the recent interview tvguide.com had with Shonda Rhimes, but there was one thing in it that highlighted a long-standing issue with the show: Rhimes, in talking about Owen and Cristina, says that she gets offended when people make comments about changing Cristina's stance on having children, and that every woman should want children, etc., and while I agree with what Rhimes is saying, I find it difficult to reconcile that they've not addressed in some fashion the fact that Cristina as an educated medical professional has had two accidental pregnancies, one of which nearly killed her, and unless I'm mistaken they've not addressed the issue that in this day and age and considering Cristina and Owen's careers, there are plenty of means of contraception (temporary and permanent) available, and apparently none are utilized. Any thoughts? — Will Matt Roush: Yes, I suppose it does come off as rather sloppy for these characters not to practice more careful birth control, all things considered. But in the bigger picture, given the delicacy of this potentially deal-breaking conflict that always looms between Cristina and Owen, I would think that for either of them to go to the ultimate step of self-sterilization would be a point of no return that the characters (and writers, obviously) aren't ready to cross just yet.full article www.tvguide.com/News/Ask-Matt-Dramedies-Arrested-Development-1067061.aspx

Patrick Dempsey Talks Racing 'LeMans,' Previews 'Grey's Anatomy' Season 10.... THR: Looking at season 10 of Grey's Anatomy, will there be a time jump when the season resumes?Dempsey: We're continuing on where we left off last season. It's continuous and it feels like it, too. The storm is continuing on and we pick up right where we left off. We're still dealing with the crisis of what's happening with the storm. We air the first two hours and our fourth episode in the season is our 200th, which is remarkable in itself. THR: Have you heard any rumblings about what that 200th is going to be?Dempsey: Not at this point; I think they're still trying to figure it out. People are very excited this year and the cast is as well. People really are enjoying the fact that we've made it to 200 episodes in 10 years. THR: Do you think this is going to be the last season of Grey's?Dempsey: I don't think it will be. I think it will continue on. Whether or not we're in the show, I think the show will continue on. I know [creator] Shonda [Rhimes] would like it to continue. THR: Do you want to continue beyond season 10?Dempsey: I think it's worth having the discussion, certainly. THR: What's Derek's trajectory this season?Dempsey: We're going to get into President Obama's agenda on brain mapping. I think that will be fun for Shepard to get into that, it's a fascinating thing. I've been starting to look at the research on that and what they're trying to achieve. I'm excited about that storyline. The writers are really getting into it. I think it would be fun to see Shepard go to D.C. and be part of the brain mapping. At the same time, it is a procedural so we need to see him in the OR. But it would be nice to be doing the brain mapping and then dealing with the political aspect of what they're doing as well and then really allowing people to understand what Obama's agenda is with that and how important it is so we can be informative and entertaining at the same time. I hope we can go in that direction. THR: What's Meredith's (Ellen Pompeo) part of that?Dempsey: Meredith is going to be juggling her career with children and Shepard is going to spending more time with the children than his career -- at least initially. We're going to see what kind of conflict that brings in their relationship. They can't be just be happy; we have to have some conflict with those two. Life is always about conflict, isn't it? whole article: www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/patrick-dempsey-talks-racing-lemans-593408

Ask Ausiello - July 30th 2013 Question: Do you have any Grey’s Anatomy spoilers about Derek and Meredith? —Toni Ausiello: The two-hour Season 10 premiere will delve into the “aftermath” of Mer’s turbulent delivery, teases Grey’s consulting producer (and Scandal Emmy nominee) Dan Bucatinsky. “She had a rough birth. We’re going to see them in the hospital together and juggling their roles in a major way.” The super-sized Sept. 26 kickoff is alternately “dramatic, emotional and exciting,” the actor-writer-producer adds. “Also, we’re going to watch these new interns become part of the fabric of the hospital. That’s going to be part of what’s fun and fresh about this season. We’re going to get to know them better.” Question: Please tell me if you have any Grey’s Anatomy news on Christina/Owen. They seriously need to be over and done with. It’s time for them to move on for good. —Abdul Ausiello: How do you really feel Paula (that is your first name, right?). Sadly, I have no news for you on “Crowen,” unless the new recurring character the show is adding figures into their fractured relationship somehow. The newbie, Bill, is a likable jazz musician in his 50s who has been “somewhat ravaged by drug abuse.” He’s slated to appear in roughly five episodes of Season 10 full article : tvline.com/2013/07/30/greys-anatomy-season-10-derek-meredith-spoilers-ask-ausiello/

'Grey's Anatomy's' Kevin McKidd: Cristina Will Help Owen Find His Person
"She's going to be helping him navigate new waters, trying to find a person who's going to be the person who has a kid with him," the actor tells THR. Kevin McKidd used to always believe that Cristina and Owen were MFEO on ABC's Grey's Anatomy, but following the couple's emotional split in the season-nine finale, that may no longer be the case. "Should we hold out for Owen and Cristina being a couple? I don't know anymore," the actor behind Dr. Owen Hunt tells The Hollywood Reporter of the couple's long-term prospects. In the ninth-season finale, Cristina broke things off with Owen for what seems like the final time in the duo's tumultuous relationship when she realized that she was the only person standing in the way of Owen following his dream of becoming a father. "Cristina has given him this huge gift and she, in a way, helps him at the beginning of the season -- pushing him toward it in a very loving way," McKidd says, noting he'll still have just as many scenes with co-star Sandra Oh (Cristina) as he did when the pair were an on-screen item. "She's going to be helping him navigate new waters, trying to find a person who's going to be the person who has a kid with him. She's definitely encouraging him. He's definitely going to explore how he's going to construct a world and a life to become a father, and Cristina is trying to encourage him. McKidd notes that the couple's most recent split -- which came after Cristina and Owen divorced so the former could reap the financial windfall from the plane crash settlement -- represents their most adult breakup and one that even Owen didn't protest. "Owen tried to convince himself because he loves her so much that he doesn't want to be a father. He tried to convince himself of the fact that he can do without being a dad as long as he has Cristina," he says. "Then the complication comes when Ethan shows up, and Cristina, because she's a sharp cookie, can see what's going on -- that he's in denial because he loves her. The sad fact is this breakup is the first time they've broken up in an adult way and for an adult reason, ever. She's seen what he needs and is ready to give it to him, and sadly that means breaking apart." The season 10 premiere picks up immediately where last season ended, with the hospital in the thick of a crisis from the super storm that soaked Seattle, causing everyone working in close quarters to manage the crush of patients. And while the realization has yet to set in for Owen that this could truly be the end of the road for them, that doesn't mean he won't make an attempt to win her back -- even though he failed to pursue her immediately following her decision to break things off for good. "I definitely think we'll see him try to get her back, but I think he realizes that maybe she's right. Maybe what she's doing here, even though it's heartbreaking, is the most loving act that she can do," McKidd says. "It's scary because potentially these two people are going to be alone in the world, so I hate to say this because I feel like Cristina/Owen fans feel suicidal, but I don't think it's the end of the relationship between Cristina and Owen." "You'll see in the first few episodes that the attraction between Cristina and Owen still burns," he teases of the duo's workplace tension. full article: www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/greys-anatomys-kevin-mckidd-cristina-599379

Grey's Anatomy's Kevin McKidd: Owen/Cristina 'Might Spend a Lot of This Season Broken Up'If you’re a fan of Grey’s Anatomy‘s Cristina and Owen, you may want to grab the paddles and charge to 300, because this grand romance is in danger of flatlining.Unless, that is, Kevin McKidd has something to say about it.
When last we tuned into the long-running ABC medical drama, Cristina (played by Sandra Oh) questioned whether Owen could ever be “enchanted” by a life with her and her alone, after he bonded so deeply with young Ethan and given her unwavering stance on children. Deciding for him that she would never be enough, Cristina set Owen free and walked away.
Given that Season 10 opens up almost immediately after the events of the superstormy finale, Owen and Cristina are splistville “definitely through the premiere, and maybe longer. It looks like it could be quite a bit longer,'McKidd tells TVLine. Especially since this feels like the umpteenth time that their disparate views on starting a family have given birth to friction. ”The problem they have is they really kind of are the loves of each other’s lives,” McKidd observes, “but they have fundamental, opposing, strong beliefs. So is one of them going to back down? I don’t know.”
One thing McKidd seems confident about is that Owen won’t simply let Cristina walk away, even after she has, well, walked away. “Cristina said, ‘I realize that I need to let you go,’ but he’s not quite there yet,” the actor notes. Nor is she, necessarily. “The problem is she’s not really ‘checked out’ [of the romance]. She tries to make herself checked out, but even through the two-hour opener you can tell that the attraction between the two of them is never going to go away. Theres always going to be this magnetism.” As such, McKidd — who is currently set to direct the coming run’s eighth episode — anticipates a “very interesting” Season 10 for Owen/Cristina, even though “they might spend a lot of it broken up.” Realizing what he just said, he quickly adds: “I know the Cristina/Owen fans will be like, ‘Oh my god, that means it’s over!’ But no, they’re still working in the same hospital, they’re still go to be constantly in each other lives. And they’re such an odd couple… I think in a wierd way they might find a way to make not being in a relationship work for them.”tvline.com/2013/08/06/greys-anatomy-season-10-kevin-mckidd-cristina-owen/

Sandra Oh Departing 'Grey's Anatomy' After Season 10 "Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go," an emotional Oh tells THR. Sandra Oh has opted to exit the medical drama from Shonda Rhimes, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively. Oh has played prickly doctor Cristina Yang since the series premiered in 2005 and will exit ABC's top-rated drama following the completion of its upcoming 10th season. The actress, who was among the stars who signed new two-year deals in May 2012 to return to Grey's through season 10, instead will pursue other opportunities beyond the series. "Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go," an emotional Oh tells THR. "It's such an interesting thing to play a character for so long and to actually get the sense that she wants to be let go as well. [Cristina] wants to be let go, and I am ready to let her go. We have to start the process, story-wise, for the Grey's writers to think of why she's going to go." Oh says she first began thinking about wrapping her Grey's run in May 2012 when what she called the "original six" inked new two-year deals to take them through the 10th season of the series. "I've gone through a lot of therapy over this," she says through tears. "I started thinking about it because I had to prepare myself. I gave myself two years to emotionally let go. At the end of last season, Shonda took me aside and said, 'What are your thoughts?' I said, 'I'm ready.'" Oh informed her co-stars about her upcoming exit during Tuesday's table read for the show's 200th episode and said the decision "doesn't feel real" yet. "I seriously think I need that much support over processing it over this next year for me to be able to leave fully and leave in a way that I feel like Cristina deserves," she says, noting that Rhimes has supported her every step of the way. "For the first time, at least for my character, you actually have an endpoint, which in series television you never or very rarely have." Rhimes has repeatedly noted that she sees herself in Cristina's character -- a driven doctor who repeatedly puts her professional life first and foremost over her personal affairs. The character was the second one Rhimes created -- following Ellen Pompeo's Meredith Grey. "One of the best days of my life as a writer happened the day Sandra Oh walked in my door to audition and forever changed the course of Grey's Anatomy with her brilliant, nuanced portrayal of Cristina Yang," series creator/showrunner Rhimes says. "Over the past 10 seasons, I have been made better by Sandra's trust, faith and friendship, and I can't quantify how grateful I am for her collaboration on a character we both love so deeply. This year is going to be bittersweet for us -- we're both going to savor every moment of Cristina Yang, and then we're going to give her the exit she deserves. And when Sandra walks out of my door, Grey's Anatomy will once again be forever changed." It's unclear just how Oh's exit will be handled on-screen. No additional castmembers are expected to be departing at this time, though the two-year contracts for stars Patrick Dempsey (Derek), Pompeo (Meredith), Justin Chambers (Alex), James Pickens Jr. (Webber) and Chandra Wilson (Bailey) are up at the end of season 10. (Dempsey recently told THR that "it's worth having a discussion" on whether he would continue on at Grey's. "Whether or not we're in the show, I think the show will continue on," he said. "I know Shonda would like it to.") 'Grey's Anatomy's' Kevin McKidd on Sandra Oh's Exit and Exploring Owen Without Cristina "Cristina Yang will always be Owen Hunt's person," the actor tells THR about his onscreen partner. Kevin McKidd has no plans to leave Grey's Anatomy just because Sandra Oh, his longtime onscreen love interest, is exiting at the end of the medical drama's upcoming 10th season. The actor, who joined the Shonda Rhimes drama in season five, is interested in exploring more of Dr. Owen Hunt's story -- without the support system the character has had in Oh's Dr. Cristina Yang. "Pain is sometimes close to pleasure, and there's a lot of pain here," McKidd tells The Hollywood Reporter of his co-star's upcoming exit. "But there will be pleasure again to explore that." Here, McKidd talks with THR about learning his co-star was leaving, hopes for Cristina and Owen, and how he'd wrap up Dr. Yang's 10-season journey. The Hollywood Reporter: Were you surprised to hear that Sandra Oh was leaving? Kevin McKidd: Sandra and I have been friends for as long as we've worked together, so I had a feeling it might be coming and that it was the right time for her. Selfishly, I was hoping and wishing she might make a different choice and decide to stay because I love working with her. I've had the great fortune and luck to be her acting partner and for her to be my acting partner for the last half a decade. It wasn't a surprise; I was aware of where she's at but was wishing and hoping that despite all that she might stick around so I might get to still act with her. It wasn't a surprise, but I was still sad when she told me. THR: What was your conversation with Sandra like when she told you? McKidd: It wasn't a long conversation; I just got really sad. I'm really happy for her, too, because it's the right thing for her right now, too, to take that new step forward in her life and career. She's an amazing talent. She has so many parts that she needs to play and work she needs to tackle, so it's obviously the right time for her. I'm happy for her, but I'm sad for me. (Laughs.) THR: Do you want to continue on at Grey's Anatomy without her? McKidd: Yes. Everybody is at a different point in their life. I'm still getting a lot out of playing Owen Hunt. I've done half as much time on the show as Sandra. I still feel there's stuff to open up and explore about Owen and to explore -- when the time comes -- the obvious grief he will be going through, which will be interesting to see what that brings up in his character and what the next phase of his life is going to be. In that respect, I'm still very excited about playing the role. In a way, I'm sad for Owen that he's got such a big bombshell coming for himself; the love of his life -- and I truly believe Cristina and Owen are the loves of each other's lives -- they're going to be broken apart. It's going to be a really great, fertile acting opportunity for me to get to play that, too. It's funny: Pain is sometimes close to pleasure, and there's a lot of pain here. But there will be pleasure again to explore that. THR: Do you know how Cristina's story ends? It sounds like it could be a sad ending for the duo.McKidd: I really don't know how it ends or how it's going to be structured. I trust in the writers and the work that they've done with Cristina and Owen; it's never going to play out the way you expect it to. It's always going to be a surprise. They always make these quite interesting choices in life for Cristina and Owen, and that's what we've enjoyed in playing the characters as a couple and why the audience has responded to them. I don't know what the nuts and bolts of it will be but it will be a tough day. I remember when Kim Raver's Teddy left and Owen had to fire her. That was one of the toughest scenes I had to play emotionally because Kim is a friend. Sandra has been my ultimate acting partner in my career -- and I've been fortunate to work with many great actors -- but Sandra is at the top of that list as a co-acting partner, and she'll remain at the top of my list for a long time to come. THR: Do you think there's a potential for Owen and Cristina to stay together even after she exits the show?McKidd: I don't know. The only thing I'm sure of is I'm sure it will be a surprise. (Laughs.) THR: Have you spoken to Shonda yet about what this means for Cristina and Owen this season?McKidd: When I was talking with Shonda and [EP] Betsy Beers about the future for Owen a few months ago, I was anxious -- if Sandra decided she wants to leave and that's the right thing for her -- if the character of Owen was valuable as a character alone? Shonda has been very vocal to me that she's interested in exploring Owen Hunt. He's always been so connected to Cristina and has needed her presence so much. When he first showed up with PTSD, the only person whom he could find solace with was Cristina Yang, [but] that has continued less so as he's found his own footing and healed himself in these last few seasons. That constant presence for him has always been there, and Shonda has expressed that she's excited about the idea of seeing who Owen is when he doesn't have his comfort blanket and support network that is Cristina Yang. THR: Last we spoke, you mentioned Cristina will help Owen find his person to have kids with. Is that still the case?McKidd: It's all very new and nothing is set in stone. Cristina Yang will always be Owen Hunt's person. But Cristina makes the bigger choice to help Owen find a person who is the right candidate or surrogate or co-parent as opposed to finding a new "person." That would be weird for Cristina's character to want to engage in that -- but certainly [she wants] to find a safe harbor for him. She loves him that much that she wants him to have that experience that he's always wanted to have. As far as the exit, we really don't know yet. I'm sure somewhere in Shonda's mind she has some amazing ideas that are going to be fantastic. I wouldn't even want to know it right now because I'm still processing the news and getting over it and assimilating to the fact that at a certain point in about nine months, I'm not going to get to act with Sandra again. It's a tough one for me. THR: If you were to write the season finale, how does Cristina's story end?McKidd: (Laughs.) It has to be some kind of blaze of glory. I would definitely not like for her to die. It has to be some kind of healing moment for Cristina Yang, where she's transcended so much medically that the hospital can't contain her anymore. Maybe Owen helps -- if she's going to be helping him find a person to have a kid with, it'd be nice to see him help her transcend to the next level of wherever it is she's headed. www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/greys-anatomys-kevin-mckidd-sandra-602865

Sandra Oh talks 'Grey's' exit, jokes about Cristina's uncertain fate: 'They could send her to the moon' Fans have an entire season of Grey’s Anatomy to watch before they have to say goodbye to Cristina Yang. And though some may be dreading the farewell, Sandra Oh, who announced yesterday that she intended to leave the ABC drama at the end of the tenth season, is simply grateful to know the show has enough time to prepare a proper exit for the beloved surgeon. “It’s really difficult to write television when you don’t know an endpoint,” she tells EW, explaining why she thought it was important to give the show’s writers time to plan for her departure. “For the writers…to know there are multiple episodes to write a story — to write a conclusion — is a great gift. It’s also a great gift to be able to play because I usually don’t know what’s going to happen to the character. For me, it can just infuse her with a richness that you can’t necessarily have not knowing that information.” It’s far too premature to discuss the details of Cristina’s exit — the show is just now filming its fourth episode of the season, which will also be its 200th overall. But as it stands there are a number of issues that should be resolved before Cristina walks out of Grey Sloan Memorial one last time, arguably the most important of which is her ongoing romantic saga with hospital chief Owen (Kevin McKidd). At the end of last season, the pair seemed to come to terms with the fact that their visions for the future were vastly different. (He wants a family; she does not.) But where that leaves them for the upcoming season, even Oh isn’t entirely sure yet. “They were really able to see each other as different people who want different things and [they approached] that difficulty with a tremendous amount of love and compassion for the other person,” she says. “ They don’t want to be in the same place they have been. Where they are going, I just don’t know. It sort of breaks my heart to not be in the arms of Kevin McKidd now. But who knows? It’s a long season.” .... full article : insidetv.ew.com/2013/08/14/sandra-oh-greys-anatomy-cristina-yang/

Sandra Oh Needed Therapy to Leave 'Grey's Anatomy'For Sandra Oh, the decision to leave "Grey's Anatomy" at the end of its upcoming 10th season did not come easy. The 42-year-old actress told The Hollywood Reporter that she sought therapy to make the decision to move on and pursue other opportunities. "I've gone through a lot of therapy over this," she told THR through tears. "I started thinking about it because I had to prepare myself. I gave myself two years to emotionally let go. At the end of last season, Shonda took me aside and said, 'What are your thoughts?' I said, 'I'm ready.'" Oh has played prickly doctor Cristina Yang, best friend of central character Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), since the ABC series premiered in 2005. "Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go," an emotional Oh told THR. "It's such an interesting thing to play a character for so long and to actually get the sense that she wants to be let go as well. [Cristina] wants to be let go, and I am ready to let her go." full article: abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/sandra-needed-therapy-leave-greys-anatomy/story?id=19957498

Saying Goodbye to One of the Best B*tchfaces on Television (.....) Between the writers and Sandra Oh, there was also balance to Cristina’s character. They were able to have her suffer traumatic or heartbreaking events without rewriting her character. I’ve seen too many shows that take strong women and throw them through an emotional wringer, only to have them come out the other side a hollow shell of themselves. Perhaps this happens sometimes, but watching Cristina crawl through depression and PTSD to come back to being a strong, confident, ambitious surgeon was wonderful. She was changed, but she was not weakened or broken. She was also the only character to finally call “bullshit” on the never-ending series of unfortunate events that plagued the doctors at Seattle Grace, referring to the hospital as “Seattle Grace Mercy DEATH” when she was in a plane crash with some of the other surgeons. There are flaws with the character; her relationships have never played out particularly well and her most recent one was particularly frustrating as it wasted the potential of Kevin McKidd as well. Sometimes her actions seemed more guided by what the writers wanted for the story, than what would be organic for the character. I was also sad that they seem to have dropped the “Cristina is a slob” characterization established early on in the series, as that was another trait we don’t typically see with female characters. And the one shot of her apartment seemed as though they were genuinely on the “you couldn’t see her living room floor for all the dirty clothes” side and not the “Oh, tee hee, sometimes I leave my purse on the counter overnight instead of on its purse hook, I’m such a slob!” version.
