{{cast news }} Grey's Anatomy Exclusive: Dexter's James Remar Set for Mysterious Season 10 Arc
Dexter’s dad is checking into Grey’s Anatomy. Acting vet James Remar has landed a multi-episode arc on ABC’s long-running medical drama, TVLine has learned exclusively. It’s unclear who Remar is playing — seriously, the information is under lock and key inside the secret room beneath Shonda Rhimes’ office — but an insider confirms that he will first air early into Grey’s upcoming 10th season. Remar is coming off an eight-year run playing the late father of Michael C. Hall’s titular serial killer on Showtime’s Dexter (the series finale airs Sept. 22). tvline.com/2013/08/16/greys-anatomy-james-remar-season-10-spoilers/

Ask Matt - Week of August 19th Question: I just read the news that Sandra Oh has decided to leave Grey's Anatomy at the end of the season. I'm sure a lot of fans will be upset or disappointed, but I actually respect her choice to leave and am grateful she has given so much notice to the writers so that they will be able to find a way to write her out effectively, which Grey's has not always had in the past. However, the broader question here is how much longer the show should run. I can't really imagine right now what it will be like without Christina, but there was also a time when I couldn't imagine it without George and Izzie and the show has remained strong without them. So the issue isn't really if Shonda Rhimes can transition the show to a place where an original cast member is not present. The issue is, really, how many people have to leave before she decides to end the show. I've read all the recent stuff where she said she's not looking at this as the final season, and ABC's Paul Lee would like to see the show go on for several more years, etc. But once again, the deals are up for the entire main cast at the end of the year. If Oh is not the only one who decides to leave — hypothetically, let's say that two or three others also decide to leave — then at what point does it become okay to just decide to end the show instead of having all these people exit at the same time? Throughout the course of the show, a lot of non-original cast members have come in and made a great impression: Sara Ramirez, Jessica Capshaw and Kevin McKidd, for example. But sooner or later the show has to end, and I'd hate to see it limp to a conclusion after the majority of the well-loved characters go. I know you didn't care for Private Practice, but I thought bringing the curtain down on that show when Kate Walsh left was great, as it allowed us to leave the characters in a good place, and I'd like to be able to imagine something similar when Grey's ends instead of having to watch half the cast disappear before it's over. If Grey's were to end sometime in the next couple of years, ABC could simply upgrade Scandal to the 9/8c hour and still have a big hit to anchor the night, so it's not like they are in desperate need of something to fill the void. Thoughts? — Jake Matt Roush: I'm pretty sure ABC would see the end of Grey's Anatomy as opening up a big void, Scandal or no Scandal. But there's no doubt losing Sandra Oh will be the most significant cast departure yet for a show that has managed to hold on to a surprising number of its core cast members. (I've often contended that Grey's is in much better shape at this stage in its life than ER was.) I basically agree that if more of the cast decides to cash out — Meredith and/or Derek especially, but I'd put Bailey in that mix as well — it will be time to think seriously about ending things while there's still a pulse. The latest batch of interns has added little but distraction to the show, and without a Grey as the focal point, what would be the point? If the rest of the gang signs on for another season or two, it would give Shonda Rhimes and her team a chance to figure out an endgame, and maybe Meredith losing her "person" will be the catalyst for that to happen. Given the nature of network TV, I wouldn't be surprised if ABC tried to keep this going at some point with or without Rhimes' participation, let alone the key cast members, but I hope they'd have the good sense to rename the show something like Have Mercy (West) and just leave Grey's out of it. full article : www.tvguide.com/News/Ask-Matt-Greys-Broadchurch-1069310.aspx

'Grey's Anatomy' Star Kevin McKidd Talks Owen's Life Without Cristina And A Big Story For Season 10 When it was announced that Sandra Oh would be leaving "Grey's Anatomy" after Season 10, the Internet exploded (Huffington Post included) with tributes to Cristina Yang and her epic friendship with her person, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). But what about Owen? I caught up with Kevin McKidd, who plays Cristina's on-again off-again husband/lover/sparring partner to find out where they stand and if Owen will ever bite the bullet and adopt a kid himself to raise as a single dad. Full disclosure: We chatted before Sandra Oh's departure was announced, but that didn't stop him from sharing plenty of scoop. He definitely must've known something then because he was already talking about Owen's future plans without Cristina and possible new love interests. He was also very matter-of-fact about his own future on the show, saying he doesn't have plans to leave anytime soon. "I love being on the show. Everyday I go there, I feel blessed and lucky and I pinch myself," McKidd said. "And I get to direct the show now … getting this kind of gig, it's a real blessing and I don't take it lightly." Keep reading for more on Season 10, including a tease about a character, possibly from "Grey's" past, who will be returning to shake things up. (And no, it's not another ghost.) The storm is still going on … where do we find the doctors when Season 10 premieres? It is -- it's a big ass storm! It's a very long storm -- a finale and a premiere, it takes that long. [Laughs.] But yeah, basically we're doing what we didn't do last year, which is picking up right from the point where we left off. The last few years we've kind of jumped around a lot through time, and this one we're just going to pick up where we left off. It's one of those premieres where if you watched the [Season 9] finale, you have to watch the Season 10 opener. Because where you left off was so insane for so many characters, especially Cristina and Owen. Poor Cristina and Owen. It's tricky. He wants a baby, and he then decided that he didn't want a baby because he loved her more than that, but she's made this unilateral decision -- again -- to go, "Well, I know you better than you know yourself, and I know you need a baby." And she's probably right, but it's one of those things where, you know, does somebody else get to tell you how to live? Maybe he's happy with that decision. So they're going to wrestle with that. I think he's a bit behind her, but he catches up to her decision pretty quickly. They're going to be in a place of not togetherness for a while. Does that mean that they're not going to be attracted to each other and end up doing stupid things together? Probably not. The thing with Cristina and Owen is they're always going to be connected. So it's really complicated. But Owen is definitely going to explore what it means to have a baby and start making moves towards that, later in the season I think. She's going to encourage him to do that, even though she doesn't want him to do that. It's a push and a pull with them, always. Any temptations for Owen coming up, maybe in the form of female guest stars? I mean, Hilarie Burton came in and shook everything up for Callie and Arizona … I know -- it's amazing how quickly that went down! I directed that episode where they introduced her and it was interesting. It was like, "Wow, this is a big deal for a lot of Calzona fans." But that's what happens in relationships on TV shows, and in life -- everything looks great on the surface, but underneath it's crumbling. It only takes one moment for things to fall apart. And if it's so easy for that one moment to happen, it shows how imperfect things really were. Well, you know, they all have a lot of issues. The thing about every character on "Grey's" is that they're all completely dysfunctional. You have to just know that going in. [Laughs.] But that's what makes them interesting and fun to play. As far as Owen goes, as a man, you can't be alone forever … I'm sure something will happen. Will you be directing more episodes this season? Yeah, I'm on the board to direct -- we're kind of doing this interesting thing this season where we'll do the first 12 [episodes], air them, and then do the last 12 and air them, all in two big blocks. So in the first block, I'm doing Episode 8, and I don't know which one I'm doing in the final block. Any details about Episode 8? They say there's a big build-up to a pretty amazing cliffhanger for the 12th episode before we take our hiatus. A key character comes back in Episode 8 that plays into the cliffhanger in Episode 12. Key character -- you mean someone from "Grey's" past? Yep. "Grey's" past-slash-present. Comes back. That's all I'm saying ... no ghosts though! [Laughs.] Read the full article here: www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/21/kevin-mckidd-greys-anatomy-season-10_n_3791651.html?ncid=edlinkusaolp00000003

Character Rehab: How to fix April from 'Grey's Anatomy'
Oh April. You’re so cute and sweet. But you are really annoying as hell, sometimes. What are we going to do with you on Grey’s Anatomy? Here are a few thoughts. 1. Let her pass her boards: It’s just weird that they rarely address the fact that April (Sarah Drew) is not a board-certified surgeon. Sure, she moans about it. But generally, it’s an afterthought. 2. Keep her away from Jackson: Sorry, but April doesn’t deserve him. She should marry her paramedic, move on, and quit mooning over Jackson’s (Jesse Williams) abs. She had her chance and blew it. No need to relive that tragedy. 3. Give her a better storyline: Yes, she’s the born-again virgin. Yes, she was caught in a quasi-love-square with Jackson, Matthew (Justin Bruening), and Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton). But she also showed signs of being a decent doctor. Have her focus on the medicine, and put the men on the back-burner. Then she might not be so whiny. 4. Give her a best lady-friend: She’ll never fill Cristina’s (Sandra Oh) shoes as Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) person, but April could definitely benefit from some tough love from Dr. Grey. Or maybe Callie (Sara Ramirez), who just caught her wife cheating, could lean on April during her marital problems, and in turn, April could learn to be a bit more of a badass like her new bestie. That’s a win-win situation. full article: popwatch.ew.com/2013/08/20/character-rehab-april-greys-anatomy/give your comments on this and other at the forum : kevinmckidd.proboards.com/thread/2729/season-10-spoiler-discussion

'Glee,' 'Walking Dead' and more must face who's missing 'Grey's Anatomy' The Twittersphere almost coded when Sandra Oh announced she was leaving ABC's long-running medical drama, but at least fans will have plenty of time to bid farewell: Cristina Yang won't be departing until the end of the 10th season. Nor does the original lead's exit signal the end of show: "It's our intention to have 'Grey's' on the air for many years to come, with as many of the original cast as possible," said a network rep. But — yikes alert! — the latest contracts expire at the end of this season for original stars Patrick Dempsey, Ellen Pompeo, Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. (provided Richard Webber lives that long). Gulp. The show returns with a two-hour premiere at 9 p.m. on Sept. 26. www.today.com/entertainment/glee-walking-dead-more-must-face-whos-missing-8C11015298

Can Grey's Anatomy Go On Past Season 10? .. Even Oh's main scene partner doesn't think her exit spells the end. "I wrestled with it a little bit because I thought it might be nice to have Cristina and Owen walk off into the sunset together," McKidd says. "But for whatever reason that it's obviously the right moment for Sandra to do this, for me, it isn't. Sandra, Ellen, Patrick and all those guys have four or five years on me at playing these characters. I still feel like I have areas of Owen I'd like to get a chance to explore because I really love this character the more and more I get to play him." ... Ask Ausiello
Question: It’s been said that Grey’s Anatomy‘s Callie won’t be shy in showing how she really feels about Arizona cheating, and that the hospital will feel her wrath. But do you have any info on how Arizona will be handling this situation? –AshleyAusiello: Oh, it’s been more than “said” – it’s been shown. And as a matter of fact, TVLine’s Matt Mitovich just got off the horn with Jessica Capshaw, and she attested, “This is no small thing. This is a huge betrayal…. And the next step is you have to understand why it happened” — meaning, there’s something else missing from the Calzona relationship besides someone’s left leg. In the meantime, yes, Callie’s wrath shall be felt. As Capshaw notes with a laugh, “Every time I would walk into a scene, it would be having to play someone who had just done something horrible. So I would come out of work and be like, ‘I really am a good person! I really am!’” Question: What can you tell me on Meredith Grey? —SaraAusiello: She was on The View Monday (in the form of her portrayer, Ellen Pompeo) promoting this week’s Grey’s Anatomy premiere and she basically declared this the Season of Yang. “As sad as it is that [Sandra Oh] is leaving — and I know the fans are really upset — to know Sandra Oh, this is going to her best acting season ever,” Pompeo told the ladies. “She’s going to go out with a bang. That’s a very positive spin on it, but she’s going to want to really, really bring it — as she does every year.” tvline.com/2013/09/24/greys-anatomy-season-10-callie-arizona-divorce-spoilers/

Interview: 'Grey's Anatomy' star Kevin McKidd talks Christina and Owen split When you meet Kevin McKidd, what's most startling (at least it is if you're a "Grey's Anatomy" fan) is the accent. Born in Scotland, McKidd's rich, rolling brogue sounds nothing like Owen, the lovelorn surgeon he plays on the show (which has a two-hour season premiere tonight at 9:00 p.m. ET on ABC). Though the actor has played many other characters memorably (fans will remember him from "Rome" and "Trainspotting"), after five seasons on the ABC show he's probably best known as Owen -- and that's just fine with him. During press tour I talked to McKidd about what's next for Owen and Christina (if anything after their split), if Owen will ever get out of denial about wanting to be a daddy, and whether or not he's really a frustrated rock star. It seems as if it's really quits for Christina (Sandra Oh) and Owen.
It feels like it, but I think the reality is, these two… I still believe they are the loves of each other's lives and soul mates. I think the way Christina put it, Owen's still in denial. Owen wants to have a kid, but he's convinced himself, because he believes it, that he loves her more than having a kid and he's willing to give up the dream of being a father to be with her. And she sees the interaction with that kid [he met] last year, and she's probably right that he is in denial. A lot of people live a lot of their lives in denial. It's going to be interesting to see when Owen finally catches up to her. It's like he's a beat behind her. He doesn't want to give her up because he loves her too much. It's going to be really tough and tragic but I think she's made this really unilateral, which is unfortunate, but very adult decision on behalf of them both. more in the full article: www.hitfix.com/starr-raving/interview-greys-anatomy-star-kevin-mckidd-talks-christina-and-owen-split#~oiEXaIu2Fp3ddB

A Grey's Anatomy Wedding and More Scoop on Season 10
Wedding bells will be ringing on Grey's Anatomy this season! When the cast of the ABC medical drama celebrated its 200th episode on Saturday night, executive producer Shonda Rhimes revealed to TVGuide.com that they're planning a wedding this season. Naturally, the first guess is that April (Sarah Drew) and Matthew (Justin Bruening) will be walking down the aisle since the duo patched things up in the premiere. But will they really be the ones to get married? Get the scoop on that, new love interests, a fun return and an emotional exit below: Wedding bells: Since April accepted Matthew's proposal — and even proposed in return — the duo will start planning their wedding. Whether their wedding actually occurs remains to be seen, but Rhimes promises there will be a wedding. "I've been planning one, so I think we're going to see one, yes," she says. "I'm not going to say a word, but we've been making plans for that kind of thing." Drew says, as of Episode 7 which they are currently shooting, that April has "been talking about the wedding and she has talked about her fiancée." But since Justin Chambers swears that Jo (Camilla Luddington) is really Alex's person, maybe his character will take a second trip down the aisle. Cristina's exit: There is still a whole season ahead of us before Sandra Oh exits the series, but Rhimes reveals that she has figured out how Cristina will say goodbye. However, Rhimes declined to comment on whether that means Yang won't survive the season. "We're all avoiding it tremendously," Rhimes said of the idea of Oh leaving. "It's the back half of the season, so we have 22 episodes to really enjoy Cristina and love her, so we're just going to enjoy ourselves doing what we're doing now."
