Is there going to be a Percy Jackson movie? Answer: Yes. You can find out more at several websites like Internet Movie Database though where it says ‘writer,’ understand that I did not write the script. I just write the books. Please don’t ask me further questions about the film version. I can’t comment or provide any additional information. Do you have any control over the movie? Answer: No. I have no control over the movie and no involvement in making it. When an author sells the rights to a book, typically full creative control goes to the movie studio and director. The rights to Lightning Thief were sold over five years ago, before the book was even published. This helped the series get noticed and become successful (that’s the good news) but I certainly didn’t have the leverage back then to bargain for more control. So if you have questions about the movie, I’m not the person to ask! I want to be in the movie. Do you have any information on casting? Answer: No. As I said, I’m not involved with the movie at all, but I do know the casting process is over and all parts have been picked. Sorry! www.rickriordan.com

Thursday, April 23, 2009 More Casting News The latest casting choices have been made public for The Lightning Thief movie: Jake Abel will play the part of Luke, and Catherine Keener will play Sally Jackson, Percy's mom. I think both of these are excellent choices. Abel fits my picture of Luke almost perfectly, and that's not easy to do. And Keener will make a great Sally. More news as it becomes available. Filming is underway in Vancouver and I'm hoping to visit the set when I'm there for my signing on May 7. rickriordan.blogspot.com/2009/04/more-casting-news.htmlTour Date 7 May Vancouver Kidsbooks, Vancouver, Canada www.calendarwiz.com/calendars/calendar.php?crd=rickriordan&op=cal&month=5&year=2009

Friday, May 08, 2009 The Movie Set and More Yesterday was quite a tour de force. After my morning media interviews, a driver from the studio picked me up and took me to the production offices for the Percy Jackson movie. The studio, I’m told, used to be a distribution warehouse for Sears before it was repurposed, and the place is massive. I can’t give away any details about the project, so I’ll have to be careful what I say, but the first thing that struck me was how many people it takes to create a movie. I thought writing a book was hard! Hundreds and hundreds of people are putting in thousands of work hours bringing Percy Jackson to the big screen. We met set designers, prop workers, costume designers, video engineers – the list goes on and on. The concept art they showed us was just amazing, but nothing compared to the real sets. I saw everything from the Met Museum to the palace of Hades. The props are also meticulously crafted. I held Percy’s sword Riptide, and it is exactly like I imagined it. As I walked through the offices, people kept coming up to me with books to sign for their children. That’s the other thing that struck me: How many Percy fans are working on this project. So many of them have children who’ve read the books. The enthusiasm level is very high, and it felt like everyone was committed to seeing the project done well. In the late afternoon, we drove over to our event for Kidsbooks. They’d reserved a school auditorium for the night, and the place was packed to capacity, even though the Canucks were playing that night, which was stiff competition. Some people had driven 2-3 hours to attend the event. I met librarians, home-schoolers, entire classes who’d come with their teachers – really a great crowd. They were excited to learn the movie was filming right in their city, and in fact some of the kids said, “My dad did the sets for that!” or “My mom is working on the costumes!” Pretty staggering how one movie can bring so many people into the process. I signed books for about two hours. My favorite comment came from a boy named Mac, who was toward the end of my line. He slumped across the table and sighed. “If I see one more god-crazed little kid,” he announced, “I’m gonna blow it!” LOL. My day was only starting, though. Our driver took us out to the set to watch the movie being filmed. They are doing nighttime outdoor scenes at the moment, so the filming was in a huge forested park north of the city, and the crew is working only during the hours of dark, which means from 9PM-5AM. We arrived at the trailer lot, which is set up behind an abandoned school. Sounds like a Percy Jackson scene already, doesn’t it? First stop: the costume trailer, because I was not equipped for the extremely muddy, cold conditions out in the woods. I borrowed galoshes and a coat, and also got to see racks and racks of all the costumes labeled: Grover’s wardrobe, Luke’s armor, Percy’s school clothes, Annabeth’s jacket – it was pretty surreal. We then drove into the woods to the set through several security roadblocks. More rows of trailers and tents: portable cafes where you could get pretty much any food you can imagine (they don’t take lunch breaks, so food is delivered to the set constantly), costume repair shops, production trailers, trailers for the actors, etc., etc. The actual set was down in a valley with huge trees. Hundreds of extras in Greek armor with red and blue-plumed helmets milled around an enormous campfire, and battle standards for the cabins were flying. It very much felt like I had walked straight into Camp Half-Blood. We stood in the director’s pavilion and watched a few takes of a scene. I got to talk with Chris Columbus and meet Logan Lerman (Percy) and Alex Daddario (Annabeth). They all seemed genuinely energized about the whole project and said everything was going well. We didn’t stay long enough to meet Pierce Brosnan or Catherine Keener, who were coming later to the set. That would’ve been a thrill, of course, but we’d had an incredibly long day and I was ready to crash. We headed back into the city and I slept very well, but all too briefly. (If you'd like to learn more about the movie in progress, here's an article from a local Vancouver newspaper.) This morning we drove to Seattle. I did a lunchtime event at Amazon.com headquarters. So many employees got their kids out of school to attend that the audience was at least half kids (which honestly is the kind of audience I like speaking with best). We celebrated the fact that The Last Olympian is now #1 on Kindle (and #2 in all books – not too shabby!). I signed copies for the kids and had a great Q&A session. This evening, we’re off to an event at 3rd Place Books. If you’re in the Seattle area, come on by! Tomorrow, the Bay Area. rickriordan.blogspot.com/

(If you'd like to learn more about the movie in progress, here's an article from a local Vancouver newspaper.)Maple Ridge News Greek demi-gods battle in GE Park Published: May 07, 2009 4:00 PM Updated: May 08, 2009 7:07 PM Within the depths of Golden Ears Provincial Park, within four campsites where families usually spend their summer, the ancient Greek world is being reborn. It’s being fashioned through the work of dozens of trades people and set designers putting together the set for a feature film that will have echoes of Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings and stars Pierce Brosnan and Uma Thurman. The movie, still to be titled, will be based on the best selling book, The Lightning Thief: Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which tells the story of 12 mythological beings who still live in the 21st century, New York, in particular. “It’s a fantasy adventure,” says Ernie Malik, publicist for 20th Century Fox. “This film takes the premise of Greek gods of mythology and puts it into the contemporary world.” There’s also a human, or half-human, half-god character named Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon. Percy is suspected by Zeus of stealing his lightning bolt and Percy has to prove his innocence by finding the real thief. That promises lots of action, much of which will be filmed at Camp Half Blood, the location being created in Golden Ears. The movie is directed by Chris Columbus, who remembered Golden Ears from when he previously produced I Love You, Beth Cooper. Columbus also produced the three Harry Potter movies and wrote the 1980s films Reckless, Gremlins, and The Goonies. Malik said author of the book, Rick Riodan, has written five Percy Jackson books. If the first works out as a movie, others could follow. “That’s the idea, is this could turn into a five-picture franchise for 20th Century Fox,” Malik said. He added that the movie follows in the same vein as the Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia. Malik said shooting should be finished by the second week of June at the latest and work in the Vancouver area complete about a month later. About 200 crew are usually on site. “There are a couple days up there when we’ll have several hundred extras working as well.” Tom Blackbird, area supervisor for B.C. Parks, said the movie company has paid for a park use permit and pointed out it’s filming in a closed area of the park that’s not open until July anyways, so there’s no impact on public use. “It’s a major feature film. This is one of the biggest ones that have been in the park for a while.” Release date is Feb. 12, 2010, when the Vancouver-Whistler Winter Olympics begin. Blackbird said shooting for the movie Twilight took place in the park a few weeks ago. the link www.bclocalnews.com/tri_city_maple_ridge/mapleridgenews/news/44561317.html

Video attached to this article www.bclocalnews.com/tri_city_maple_ridge/mapleridgenews/news/47873802.htmlThe ancient Greek world awakened this spring in Golden Ears Provincial Park. The signs and symbols of antiquity were everywhere in the North Beach campground as shields and swords, armour and wooden carts, archways, even an infirmary with old potions appeared in a space usually occupied by lawn chairs and RVs. Twentieth Century Fox has occupied the 55-site campground since April, recreating mythology for the filming of The Lightning Thief: Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The book is about a 12-year-old boy who learns he’s half human, half god and his adventures when the god Zeus suspects him of stealing his lightning bolt. “Can you imagine – what if you were told that you were part god and part human?” asked movie publicist Ernie Malik, as he gave Yennadon elementary kids a tour of the set Tuesday. In the movie, North Beach campground is transformed into Camp Half Blood, where the main character, Percy Jackson, is sent to hone his fighting skills. Percy’s just been told his life is in danger and he’s just arrived at the camp where the half god, half humans are trained. One of the actors, Brandon T. Jackson from Tropic Thunder, played the role of Grover, Percy’s protector. Grover is a Satyr, a mythical half-man, half-human creature. That role required Jackson to walk on his toes as he donned a costume that gave him hooves for his front feet. “We had 30 stunt people and 30 people who are like circus acrobats – and they were doing all these fancy jumps and everything as Percy is looking around,” Malik told the kids, trying to stir their imaginations. The Grade 6 and 7 students, though, didn’t need much inspiration. Teacher Jeff Conway already had his Grade 6/7 class read the first Percy Jackson book earlier this year before the film company arrived. The ancient gods must have been smiling a bit. “It was very lucky they were filming in the area,” he said “It just happened to work out really oddly in that way.” Conway, who’s read all five of the fantasy adventure novels by Rick Riodan, said the books help teach kids about Greek mythology, while providing an entertaining read. “Some of them really like the adventure that goes along with it,” he added. The books also make things easier for the boys in his class. Sometimes it’s difficult to find suitable stories. But one student read the book in a day. For Grade 6 student, Bailey Plante, the visit just added to the book. Although the swords were made of plastic or light wood, they looked like you could just pick one up and slice somebody, he said. One thing that wasn’t on the set, though, was the big tree, which in the book is a major part of Camp Half Blood. Plante has read the first two Harry Potter books, but says Percy Jackson is a better read. “It’s much better. It’s got more adventure and action. I don’t get bored.” Grade 7 student Austin Hickel thought Camp Half Blood would be a little more decorated “but it was pretty good, other than that. “I figure it’s going to be a good movie.” He’s read all five Percy Jackson books, one of them within a day. The Lightning Thief, the movie title still to be confirmed, is scheduled for release on Feb. 12, the first day of the Vancouver-Whistler Winter Olympics. “We’ve been learning about them [Greek gods] for quite a while now,” added Sarah Bennett, in Grade 6. “It was really interesting to learn. My favourite was Athena, goddess of war.” She liked the part of the set located on Alouette, where Aphrodite, the goddess of love, sat on the beach of Alouette Lake, where the kids had their lunch. A major set in Camp Half Blood was the infirmary, where Percy was treated for his wounds. After a wood frame provided the skeleton, thick columns of styrofoam were carved and painted to look like tree trunks and heavy timbers. It took about three weeks to build and the most difficult part that took the most time were the finishing touches, said Ken Watson, on construction at the set. “Plus, when it’s raining, it’s really hard to get the paint to dry.” Filming took place there for just two days. At a visit to the blacksmith shop, kids admired the weapons and armour. “All of these pieces that you see … is all handmade,” Malik explained to a throng of kids admiring a sword, made out of light wood or plastic. “Then, of course, when you hear the clanging, that’s all done with sound effects.” The tour took place a day after the last day of shooting, during the “strike-down” phase, when all the props and sets were taken down, piled into trucks and stowed away for the next cinematic creation. Workers were already sweeping up, trying to get the campground to its original condition. Filming took place from the first week of April and crews were cleaning up the campground to turn it back to campers by June 26.

Pierce Brosnan 16 June I recently wrapped production on Percy Jackson, based on the popular book series by Rick Riordan. The film, directed by my friend Chris Columbus, with whom I worked on Mrs. Doubtfire, centers on a teenage boy who discovers he's the descendant of a Greek god. Percy Jackson then sets out on the adventure of a lifetime to settle an on-going battle between the gods. Cast members include Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Rosario Dawson, Catherine Keener, Logan Lerman, Kevin McKidd, Melina Kanakerides, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario and yours truly. www.piercebrosnan.com/menu.php?mm=1&sm=1&pn=1

Chris Columbus is directing a film adaptation of Rick Riordan's first Percy Jackson & the Olympians novel, The Lightning Thief, a 21st-century take on Greek mythology. But Columbus said that he isn't worried that Warner Brothers is making its own Greek-inspired movie, a remake of Clash of the Titans. "No, because we're first," Columbus said in an exclusive interview Saturday in Santa Monica, Calif., where he was promoting I Love You, Beth Cooper. Titans, starring Sam Worthington, hits theaters in March of 2010, but 20th Century Fox locked in a February 2010 release date for Columbus' film. Was it a calculated decision? "Oh, yeah," Columbus said. In Columbus' movie, Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) is a boarding school kid sent to Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods. From there he has adventures with gods and creatures of Greek myth in the present day. This is not a spoof, mind you: Columbus takes his gods very seriously. "Percy Jackson's a very serious movie," Columbus said. "It's comedic, but it's only comedic in a way that an Indiana Jones movie can be comedic. So I think in terms of comparing it to something like Clash of the Titans, it is more of an Indiana Jones-meets-Greek-mythology [movie], as opposed to a pure period-piece Greek myth, Clash of the Titans." Columbus has taken some liberties with the source material: Maybe not every sequence from the book is in the movie, but maybe he came up with some better ideas. "Just some of the creatures have been changed," Columbus said. "We have sort of a breathtaking hydra sequence that replaces a sequence that used to take place at the Seattle Arch. Our version of Hades is a little different. There are other changes here and there. Camp Half-Blood is a lot more dangerous, a lot more serious than it was in the book." Columbus has also cast Uma Thurman as Medusa. On the set, Thurman wore a blue skullcap painted with dots for computer-graphics artists to add her hair of snakes in post-production. Otherwise, this Medusa is as hot as Uma Thurman. "Well, Medusa has to be extremely seductive so she can get people to open their eyes and look into her eyes," Columbus said. "So she is a combination of one of the most frightening creatures I've ever seen on screen yet with a very seductive voice." Fox plans to release Percy Jackson & The Olympians in theaters on Feb. 12, 2010. scifiwire.com/2009/06/percy-jackson-faces-a-cla.php

(snip) Q: Why such a long break between movies for you? Chris: Rent was in 2005, and that was part of the reason I jumped into this. And then, I realized I was going to do Percy Jackson immediately afterwards. There won’t be a longer break anymore, as far as I’m concerned. Q: What can you say about Percy Jackson? Chris: We have a tremendous cast. We just finished shooting Uma Thurman as Medusa, with Pierce Brosnan as Chiron. And, this kid from 3:10 to Yuma, Logan Lerman is Percy Jackson. I believe he’s going to be one of the great leading men. I really do. I don’t say that often, but I think he’s really an amazing kid. He’s got a sense of reality about him and a sense of real intensity that I haven’t seen in many 17-year-olds. Q: What interested you in that project? Chris: I’m like a little kid, really. I love to see movies where I haven’t seen things before, and I haven’t seen the world of Greek mythology done really well, on screen. It’s always those cheesy stop-motion monsters, so I really wanted to do them in a much more interesting way. Q: How are you achieving that? Chris: Really fine CGI work. We have Uma Thurman playing Medusa, but she’s wearing those things on her head. We’re putting several snakes in her hair that move, and move with the performance. It’s really interesting. Q: Are you staying true to the books, to set it up for sequels? Chris: Yeah, but there’s a bit of a sense of liberation with Percy Jackson because we’re changing the books. I wouldn’t say significantly, but we’re able to change them a little bit. Q: Are you worried that will upset fans of the books? Chris: I’m not worried. I think they’ll be excited. I’m really excited about the movie. I think we’ve made some of the right choices. A couple of the other books are going to be a bigger challenge, but I think they’ll be real happy with this one. Q: Will you be involved with further films? Chris: I hope so. We have a good cast and I love this world. It’s really exciting. Q: Has Percy Jackson got any similarities at all? (harry Potter) Chris: The book does, so we’ve tried to remove those similarities. Q: Is it weird then to go from this to Percy Jackson? Chris: Yeah. Our second unit crew on Beth Cooper were like ex-cons. It was a little scary. I’d go to the second unit and fear for my life. They had prison tattoos. It was scary. That’s how you do it. We’re not hiring children from foreign countries and exploiting them, but at one point, I thought we had convicts working for us. I really didn’t know. It was weird. Q: Does Canada have a work-release program from ex-cons on movie productions? Chris: That was my sick sense of humor. If this gets out, the crew is going to kill me. Just give me three weeks. I’m in Canada for three more weeks. This was the second unit, not the first unit. There were no convicts in the first unit, but I did see one prison tattoo. But, our Percy Jackson crew has no convicts. Q: What are you doing after Percy Jackson? Chris: I have no idea. We have to get Percy Jackson out by February of next year. Q: Will you take Percy Jackson to Comic-Con? Chris: I’d love to, but Comic-Con is in July and we don’t have our visual effects finished. When people see the visual effects, I want them to really be blown away by them and they’re not complete yet. They’re just not ready to show. Q: What studio is that? Chris: It’s Fox. Q: Is that your home studio? Chris: Now. It used to be Warner Bros, but now it’s Fox. We’ll see. They’ve been good, though read rest of article here www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7085&Itemid=99

Uma goes green again By Glen Schaefer 06-30-2009 communities.canada.com/theprovince/blogs/reelman/archive/2009/06/30/uma-goes-green-again.aspx Uma Thurman's character in the new teen fantasy Percy Jackson and the Olympians seems to harken back to her role as Poison Ivy in 1997's Batman and Robin. She plays the demon Medusa in director Chris Columbus' latest, about a modern-day boy descended from the Greek gods. This movie's Medusa makes her home amid otherworldly plants (the echo of the Batman role). Thurman just wrapped her role, filmed mostly at a plant nursery outside of Vancouver, a location redone by Oscar-nominated Vancouver set decorator Peter Lando (of another Batman movie, last year's The Dark Knight). The closed greenhouse and nursery on the Langley-Surrey border was called Kim Farm, renamed Aunite Em's Emporium for its transformation into Medusa's lair for the movie. Lando decked it out with a combination of live and dead foliage, plus more than 100 sculptures made to look like the demon's pertified victims (look into her eyes and you turn to stone). Thurman will sport CGI snakes coming out of her head in the movie, which also stars Pierce Brosnan, Rosario Dawson and Steve Coogan as other immortals, and Catherine Keener as the human mother of the title character (Logan Lerman). Filming at the nursery location wrapped in June, with filming continuing elsewhere until mid-July.
