www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/2009/07/06/from-harry-potter-to-percy-jackson-another-franchise-for-columbus/Audio listen to Chris C chat about his cast Director CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS (who has already taken on one successful y.a. franchise with the first three HARRY POTTER movies) is currently hard at work on the big screen adaptation of PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF by RICK RIORDAN. And, even though COLUMBUS has lined up stars such as PIERCE BROSNAN, UMA THURMAN and ROSARIO DAWSON, it’s the casting of the title role he’s most proud of. We spoke with the director recently and he talked about his new find (someone we’ve been watching since TV’s JACK & BOBBY) LOGAN LERMAN. Listen in below:

Ok this is a bit of an odd post LOL christinabergh.com/bergh-site/gallery/tapestries/pages/percy-jackson1.htmif you spot them in the movie youll have to let me know "Percy Jackson" Movie Blanket Woven by Christina Bergh as props for "Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief", a Hollywood movie based on the popular children's book by Rick Riordan. The movie, scheduled for release in 2009, stars Pierce Brosnan. The blankets are recreations of an antique blanket that the movie studio's prop department purchased. Christina was asked to reproduce it with some modifications to the design.

I think Rose needs to take a stroll in the park. Modern-day dress? So no towel then? Now, that was funny, and Genius´ answer was even more funnier (for reasons I think she´s probably aware by now . But, sorry for my ignorance here (bear with me, I don´t live in the English speaking world and don´t have infant or teenage kids) - have you read the books? Are they any good? Anyway, I think it´s a smart career move. The cast is stellar and Chris Columbus has proved to be very competent when it comes to this kind of material - just check the two first Harry Potter´s movies.

Guys, making "ignorant" questions is different from making "stupid" ones - which is exactly what I did above, since I´ve seen there´s a whole thread in which you debated your stances about the books. Sorry, and now I´m out to read that thread.

It was a busy day yesterday! The first trailer for the Lightning Thief movie was released online, and Fox's site for the movie is now active. I'm sure much more will be added in the coming months. The trailer will be shown before the new Harry Potter film, which opens today, so if you go see Harry, you'll see your first glimpse of PJO: The Lightning Thief on the big screen. Several people have already reported they saw the trailer when they went to the midnight opening. A few people have asked, "Was that scene in the book?" No, I don't think it's supposed to be a scene from the book *or* the movie. To the best of my knowledge, it's a special scene they created exclusively for the trailer to get your attention. I think it looks pretty amazing and even my kids, who are tough critics, thought it looked good. I will issue my usual caveat: I am not directly involved with making the movie, so if you have questions, I can't answer them! Please don't deluge the website with questions, comments, advice, or whatever. I just write the books, guys. The movie is not my department! Check the FAQ page for the very little that I can tell you. Will the movie be exactly like the book? Well to start with, I have never seen a movie that was exactly like the book it came from, so I think it's safe to say no. Movies are a totally different medium. What you'll be seeing is not the Lightning Thief book copied page for page onto the screen. What you'll be seeing is Chris Columbus's interpretation of the Lightning Thief story. How will it compare to the book? That's a much harder question, and one I can't really answer! Being an author, obviously, I always like the book version. That's because a book allows you to create your own mental images of the characters and settings. Those images are always the most vivid and most real. As soon as someone shows you a picture of a character, many of you will probably say, "But that's not what he looks like!" This is why we never show Percy's face on the covers of the books. We want you to have your own image of what he looks like. The picture in your mind is always the best. Case in point: I got very annoyed when I tried to read the seventh Harry Potter book, because by then I'd seen the movie versions and I couldn't stop seeing Daniel Radcliffe in my head. No offense to Radcliffe, who's a great actor, but I had my own image of Harry Potter before the movies came along, and I liked my version better! So doubtless, some things in the Lightning Thief movie version may be not exactly the same as you (or I) imagined them. Some story elements may be altered to make the movie work as a movie. I think it's safest to go into the movie with that assumption. Let the movie be the movie, and the books be the books, and try to enjoy the story without getting too worked up about any differences. I had an interesting conversation with my son Haley about this recently. We were talking about Alex Daddario, who plays Annabeth, and how some people were confused because Alex is a brunette and Annabeth in the book is a blonde. Haley laughed. "What's the big deal? In the original story you told me, Annabeth was a brunette." I stared at him. "She was?" "Yeah. I always saw her as brunette." I have no recollection of this, but I never argue with Haley's memory. He can remember things he did when he was two years old with absolute clarity, so I'm sure he's right. Haley was the original audience for the Lightning Thief, as you may have heard, and so there you have it from the ultimate source: Annabeth was originally brunette. He also reminded me that I changed many, many details from the original story when I wrote it down as a novel. So I guess I can't get too upset if some details change from the book to the movie. After all, this is Greek mythology we're dealing with. The stories were told (and changed) hundreds of times as they were passed along through the generations. It's just part of the storytelling tradition. It's also something I like about Greek myth. There is no "right" version. Each myth has dozens of variations, and you can pick and choose the one you like best. Anyway, the first trailer is very promising. Chris Columbus offers up some amazing imagery. We'll just have to wait to see what is revealed next. rickriordan.blogspot.com/

Did Columbus discover next Potter? Director returns to town to helm Percy Jackson The glitzy casino floor is crowded with gamblers, dealers, tourists and curvy cocktail waitresses, captured by a sweeping crane shot as the camera swoops down to eye level. Teenaged Percy Jackson (actor Logan Lerman) wanders through, finally stopping to talk to a pinball player who looks like a shaggy holdover from the 1970s. An assistant director issues commands to the crowd through a loudspeaker as the scene and the camera moves are repeated several times. Finally director Chris Columbus is satisfied and 250 extras file off the huge soundstage set, still carrying their cocktail glasses. Columbus is the man who kick-started the phenomenally successful Harry Potter movie franchise, directing the first two Potters and producing the third. He's nearing the end of nearly four months filming in Vancouver on Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, based on the first of five fantasy novels about a New York teen who discovers he's the son of a Greek god. On the face of it, the series sounds a lot like Potter -- two boys and a girl caught in a supernatural battle between good and evil -- but it's clear this day that Columbus isn't at Hogwarts any more. Percy's Greek gods and monsters live secretly among us in the present day. Mount Olympus hovers high above New York's Empire State Building. "We're dealing with Greek mythology, which I don't think has ever been done really well on film," says Columbus. "It's not gods in flowing white robes who sit on billowy clouds. Everything has a sense of reality and a somewhat epic quality. In Potter, once you're at Hogwarts, for the most part, you're outside of modern-day society. Here it's the underbelly of contemporary America. Around every supposedly normal facade lies something a little more sinister." So Percy Jackson involves a road trip from New York to Los Angeles, which in this scene has Percy and his friends in a Vegas casino, an enchanted spot called the Lotus Land where those inside are lured and frozen in time, hence that holdover guy from the '70s. The heroes will make their escape in a black Maserati on a nearby podium -- the downtown Bayshore Hotel was tarted up Vegas-style for the exterior scene where the car crashes out a plate-glass window. In addition to 17-year-old Lerman, who earlier held his own with Christian Bale and Russell Crowe in the western 3:10 to Yuma, the cast includes actor-comedian Brandon T. Jackson (Tropic Thunder) as Grover, an apprentice satyr assigned to protect Percy, and New York's Alexandra Daddario as another half-god teen. The adult cast includes Pierce Brosnan as a centaur and Uma Thurman as Medusa, with digital effects adding the horse body to him and the snake hair to her. Others in divine and mortal roles include Catherine Keener, Ray Winstone, Sean Bean, Steve Coogan and Scottish actor Kevin McKidd (Grey's Anatomy) as Percy's father, the sea god Poseidon. The movie is set for release next Feb. 12, and if it scores with audiences Columbus and company will be ready to launch into a movie adaptation of the next book. "I wouldn't be here if I wasn't ready to do the other movies," says Lerman. Long days on set haven't given him much time to ponder what it would mean to be part of a blockbuster movie franchise. "None of it has really sunk in yet," says the L.A.-raised Lerman, who got his start with roles in back-to-back Mel Gibson movies What Women Want and The Patriot. He's surprising calm about standing in the middle of a multi-million dollar set, built for a movie with his character's name in the title. "It feels like I must have fooled a lot of people to get here, the centre of some big budget blockbuster. Kind of a weird feeling, but it's been months now, it's work, showing up every day, like a day at the office." Another Percy Jackson would also mean the continuation of Columbus' relationship with Vancouver, after he first came here in the spring of 2008 to film the small-scale high school comedy I Love You, Beth Cooper. The director already had Percy Jackson in mind back then. "This has the potential to become Vancouver's version of what [Britain's] Leavesden Studios had with Harry Potter," says Columbus. "I was very spoiled on Potter -- we had some of the best sets ever built in the history of cinema. I wondered if we could get to that level on this picture, and we have. The benefit of shooting in Vancouver is working with some of the world's greatest artists, people who can recreate an entire casino interior on a soundstage, only giving it a certain magical, surreal twist. Aside from my Harry Potter crew, this is the best crew I've ever worked with." As he works on Percy Jackson, Columbus is measuring the results against The Lord of the Rings and the Narnia series, as well as his own Potter films. "Even though we're in the realm of a gigantic fantasy -- as the studio would call it -- franchise film, we're trying to accomplish something a little different," he says. "We obviously want to reach the same family audience that those films reached, but these need to feel like their own series of films." www.theprovince.com/entertainment/movie-guide/Columbus+discover+next+Potter/1805731/story.html

Snip Columbus has watched the later Potter films as a fan of his proteges. “They pushed themselves in subsequent films further than I ever expected them to — Daniel and Rupert and Emma have grown into just marvellous actors.” For Percy Jackson, also based on a best-selling series of teen fantasy novels, Columbus was once again facing the prospect of casting actors to play characters who start out as 11-year-olds. Instead, he opted to rewrite the starting ages to 17 years old, and cast veteran actors Logan Lerman (3:10 to Yuma), Brandon T. Jackson (Tropic Thunder) and Alexandra Daddario (All My Children). Percy Jackson is a modern-day American kid who discovers he’s descended from the Greek gods, and that a magical world exists in tandem with our own. An epic battle between supernatural good and evil ensues. “I felt when we got into this process, that the types of scenes we were getting into, really it was necessary to cast slightly older actors,” says Columbus. “The physicality of some of these battle sequences, the action sequences were very demanding, so we’ve changed that.” And, he admits, it’s just easier directing an experienced older cast. “My level of exhaustion is not anywhere near,” he says. “Those (Potter) pictures were like running double marathons.” communities.canada.com/theprovince/blogs/reelman/archive/2009/0 7/20/the-kids-are-alright.aspx
