I know what you’re thinking - isn’t this film called Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief? Well, not if you live in the UK it isn’t! A new title was announced for the film this weekend, shortening the tongue twisting title to the much friendlier Percy Jackson: The Lightening Thief. Featuring an all-star cast including Sean Bean, Uma Thurman, Pierce Brosnan, Kevin McKidd, Steve Coogan and Logan Lerman as young Percy, the film is directed by “Harry Potter” veteran Chris Columbus. www.filmshaft.com/percy-jackson-the-lightning-thief-trailer/

Ottawa company brings its technology to big screen Scanning ability in high demand for blockbusters By Vito Pilieci, Canwest News ServiceAugust 12, 2009 Despite hefty competition and some seriously long-distance travel arrangements, a small Ottawa imaging company is making an ever-larger mark on Hollywood's biggest blockbusters. Employees from XYZ-RGB Inc. have been jetting to sets and special effects studios from Vancouver to Los Angeles to Chicago to scan actors and objects for computer-generated sequences. The company's work can be seen in this summer's blockbuster, G. I. Joe, where it provided full-body digital scans of actors including Sienna Miller and Channing Tatum, as well as in the upcoming District 9 by director Peter Jackson, and the recently released Public Enemies with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. Keeping up with demand has been a bit of a challenge for the six-person company, which has had to acquire 10 portable 3-D imaging cameras that use the company's proprietary scanning technology at a cost of about $300,000. And competition in the scanning field is heating up. At least five rival firms have popped up, and they're in Los Angeles, within a stone's throw of the movie studios that XYZ RGB courts. Still, chief operating officer Troy Robinson isn't worried. "They're not filming anything in L. A. these days, so it doesn't really matter. Everything is being done in Vancouver," he said. And, he noted, being headquartered in Ottawa means his crew doesn't need to clear U. S. customs to get to Vancouver. "There is a lot of competition, but we've made a lot of improvements . . . and we have been working with this type of data for 10 years." Less than five years ago, XYZ-RGB was one of the few companies in the world that could scan an actor's face or a model of a fictional character and create a digital likeness so perfect that, placed in a film's computer-generated action sequence, it could fool a theatre audience. The company provided 3-D scans for the 2005 remake of King Kong as well as 300, Blades of Glory, the Matrix trilogy and Batman Begins. The privately held company does not report earnings, but Robinson says it is profitable. Demand for its 3-D scans has forced the small firm to cut back on fun little perks that staff once looked forward to. In its early days, XYZ RGB would close up shop on the opening day of a movie it had worked on, and the six would head out to the theatre. Now, they don't have time. "Too busy; it's hard to do that," Robinson said. XYZ-RGB has already worked on more than 10 movies this year, including the adventure movie Whiteout, which features Kate Beckinsale and will be released in September, and Percy Jackson&the Olympians:The Lightning Thief, a major production to be released in 2010.Robinson can't comment on other films the company is working on because of strict nondisclosure contracts.XYZ-RGB's technology was created by scientists at the National Research Council at a cost of $20 million in the 1980s. It was originally used to scan ancient artifacts too fragile to be on display at museums. The scans would then be used to make replicas of the objects for display. The company started using the technology for movies in 2001. www.calgaryherald.com/travel/Ottawa+company+brings+technology+screen/1884170/story.html

Hmm, interesting - a version of Poseidon's trident, but with a sword incorporated, I take it?

Behind the Scenes of Percy Jackson If it takes 10 hours to shoot a 2-minute scene, then how long for a whole movie! The first of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series, The Lightning Thief, will soon be on the big screen. How do I know? I recently visited the movie set in Vancouver, Canada, where author Rick Riordan’s most famous creation is being filmed. The fifth and final book in the series, The Last Olympian, was released this May. The movie is set to be release in February 2010. It was my first time on a movie set, and it was amazing! The scene being filmed the day I visited was when Grover and Percy walk out of the infirmary in Camp Half-blood. It’s the scene when Grover tells Percy that he, too, is a demigod. The setting of Camp Half-Blood is in Golden Ears Park, so there was an abundance of trees, moss, shrubs, and mosquitoes! The unit publicist, who was pretty much our tour guide that day, took my mom and me around the area so I could get a view of all the camera angles. I also got to hang out in the director’s tent where Director Chris Columbus worked setting up and reviewing the different shots on a computer screen. (Columbus also directed the first two Harry Potter movies.) The entire 10-hour workday was spent on that one scene, which will end up being only about two-minutes long in the movie. They had to get five different angles of the scene, and since the actors would forget lines or the lighting wasn’t always perfect, it took the whole day just to get it right. The first half of the day, the director focused on getting the front and right side views of the scene. After a nice lunch in the dining tent, actors took about a half-hour break in their mobiles before getting back to work. The last half of the day, cameras were focused on the left angle and the back. Cameras were set up behind the actors to film them while they walked. This took only about half an hour, because you wouldn’t see the actors’ lips moving. It didn’t matter if they flubbed their lines for this! You may think that one scene is easier or harder to shoot than the other, but not according to Columbus. “I think on this film, every scene is a major challenge to create the reality of the Olympian world,” he said. It was a great day and I learned a lot about how much work it takes to make a movie. —Grace Choi blogs.scholastic.com/kidspress/2009/08/behind-the-scenes-of-percy-jackson.html

It took a little while for Gamer and My One and Only to be released, but Percy Jackson is a different story. There was a set release date and trailer out for that before you even finished shooting. Yeah, we made it and just powered through it and they’re releasing it really soon. But all I have to say about Percy Jackson is that, from what I’ve seen, is it’s really one of the coolest movies ever. It’s going to blow people away, and not many people know about it just yet. The official, full trailer hasn’t come out yet, and people really haven’t seen anything at all, but it’s really going to take everyone by storm. So what do you know about it that we don’t? I know it’s based on a book series, and that it essentially trades Hogwarts for Mt. Olympus. What else? I’m gonna try to not give that much away, and I’m really bad at that. [Laughs] For me, the thing about this film is that it brings back the feeling of Back to the Future, for me. The feeling, the tone of that movie, is what this is for me. It’s full of iconic action sequences, great actors, it has all the elements and technique put together to be an amazing film. I’ve seen a lot of cut-together footage and a lot of sample effects, and it’s just mind-blowing, this movie. If you want something to look forward to, there’s this insane aerial battle in New York City with Zeus’s lightning bolts, pretty much end-of-the-world stuff, and it’s just the coolest battle scene ever. I’m more curious about the casting of Uma Thurman as Medusa. Are they playing her as beautiful or hideous? You know, she came in and she was so excited to do this role, and I was dying to work with her. She gives such a chilling performance in this movie. The way she looks, she has this really long leathery outfit with crazy snakes coming out all over her head, hissing. I’m horrible at explaining it, but that’s because it’s like nothing I’ve seen before. www.movieline.com/2009/08/the-verge-logan-lerman.php

Eureka’s Erica Cerra Goes Greek For Percy Jackson Written by Ian Cullen on September 2, 2009 – 10:00 am - Eureka star Erica Cerra who plays the role of Deputy Jo Lupo in the popular Syfy series is set to make her movie debut playing the Goddess Hera in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, which is currently in post production and likely to hit cinema’s next year. This is a first major movie role for Cerra and she is mixing it up with some pretty big names in the movie. Other cast members include the likes of: Uma Thurman, Rosario Dawson, Pierce Brosnan, Sean Bean, Kevin McKidd, Catherine Keener, Melina Kanakaredes, Steve Coogan and Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson. The movie is directed by Chris Columbus who is best known for having directed the Home Alone movies and the first couple of Harry Potter films. The film is based on the hugely popular book series by Rick Riordan. The story centres on a young lad called Percy Jackson who learns he’s the half-human/half-god son of Poseidon (McKidd) and embarks on a journey of adventure and self-discovery that also involves warring gods. Cerra plays Hera, the goddess of marriage and wife of Zeus (Bean), the god of lightning. In a recent interview for SciFi Wire Cerra revealed that she is a huge fan of the Harry Potter books, and waxed enthusiastically about Percy Jackson. “I have all the books. I’ve seen all the movies a billion and one times. When I heard what Percy Jackson was about I read it and pushed, pushed, pushed to be in the movie. So I was absolutely thrilled when I got a role, and then I was sitting in a room with Sean Bean and Kevin McKidd and Melina Kanakaredes, who plays Athena. It was a wonderful experience, and I’m a very big fan of Chris Columbus, so that was really cool as well. In the novels, in the other stories, Hera and Zeus show up to help Percy, so hopefully they will also in the [sequel] scripts.” Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief opens in the USA on Feb. 12, 2010. scifipulse.net/?p=12993

WHAT? In the same way that Harry Potter took familiar tales of magic and witchcraft and transplanted them to a recognisable world, Percy Jackson takes Greek myths and legends and relocates them to the modern-day USA. So the gods are still going around and knocking up mortals; monsters are still tussling with the demi-gods who result, and the whole world around us only masks an older, darker one beneath. Percy (full name: Perseus) has been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia as a result of his inability to pay attention at the many schools he has attended. But he doesn't start to suspect that anything else in his life might be wrong until he somehow causes water from a nearby fountain to soak a bully who's attacking Percy's friend Grover. His maths teacher Mrs Dodds (Maria Olsen), a Snape-like figure in her willingness to believe ill of Percy, summons him back inside the museum they're visiting - and turns into a Fury. Percy's favourite teacher, Mr Brunner, throws his pen to Percy as she attacks; it transforms into a bronze sword and he's able to fight the algebra-loving harridan off. Mr Brunner denies that anything happened - but it's the beginning of an adventure that sees Percy set off on a cross-country trek in search of Zeus' missing lightning bolt, dodging gods and monsters all the way as he fights to stop a war breaking out among the gods. Just for the record, fact-fans, the last time that happened the results were the Siege of Troy and the death of hundreds of thousands, and in those days they didn't even have AK-47s. In short, think Neil Gaiman's American Gods but for kids. The books read like Potter - same easily accessible style, same racing speed to the plot - but they're narrated in the first person by Percy himself. The Lightning Thief is the first of five books published to date. WHY? Are you kidding? It's a wildly popular kid's franchise very much in the Potter mould that's just dying to be turned into an equally successful film franchise. And the filmmakers have followed the Potter model in casting too: relative unknowns as the kids who do most of the heavy lifting in terms of screentime; a cast of established names to round things out and add gravitas to the background roles. And what roles they are: the Greek gods are superhuman but still giving to bickering, fighting, cheating and generally misbehaving. Given that Columbus previously launched the Potter franchise, the hope has got to be that this will follow the same pattern: as with Potter, the stakes get higher and the stories get darker as the books progress, and the stories are rollicking good stuff. Assuming the kids are up to it, and the scripts, we have high hopes for this one. WHO? Sean Bean will play head god, Zeus Steve Coogan is to play God of the Underworld, Hades Rosario Dawson will play Persephone The series of books about Percy Jackson and the Olympians (five and counting) were written by Rick Riordan, a Texas-based former schoolteacher who's also been working on mammoth children's book series The 39 Clues. The film's directed by Chris Columbus, who of course established the world of Harry Potter in the first two films of that series. Alongside Logan Lerman (3.10 To Yuma) who landed the leading role of Percy Jackson himself, and his friends demi-god Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario) and satyr Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) the film has an all star cast. The Olympians include: Zeus - (Sean Bean) The head god is peeved because his trademark Lightning Bolt has been stolen, and since Percy's a suspect, he's going to need to tread carefully. Capricious, moody and unpredictable, Zeus is someone to tiptoe around generally for that matter. Poseidon - (Kevin McKidd) God of the Sea, Zeus's brother and another of the "Big Three" most powerful members of the pantheon. He kinda seems like he might be on Percy's side, but as with all the Gods, it's hard to say. Hades - (Steve Coogan) God of the Underworld, another brother and last of the Big Three. He's generally distrusted by his fellow gods, who suspect that he's behind the theft. But that's probably just because he tricked… Persephone - (Rosario Dawson), Goddess of Spring, into marrying him. She spends most of her time in the Underworld, but when she comes up top to visit her mother Demeter (Stefanie von Pfetten) spring comes to Earth. Luke Camilleri - (Dionysus), God of Wine. Only at the moment he's not allowed to drink for 100 years as a punishment from Zeus, and is condemned to run "Camp Half- Blood" (keep reading) as part of his punishment. Ares (Ray Winstone) - God of War, he's secretly carrying on an affair with Aphrodite, Goddess of Love (Serinda Swan) despite the fact that she's married to Hephaestus (who doesn't appear in the first story). Athena (Melina Kanakaredes) - Goddess of War and Wisdom. Mother to Percy's friend Annabeth (the Hermione of the series, if you will). Apollo (Dimitri Lekkos) - God of the Sun, Music and Poetry. Probably the coolest of the Olympians. Hera (Erica Cerra) - Goddess of Marriage (among other things). Zeus's long-suffering wife. Prone to fits of bad temper. Also with important roles to play are: Sally Jackson (Catherine Keener) - Percy's mother, who had an affair with one of the gods years before (but which one?) and gave birth to her demi-god son. Gabe Ugliano (Joe Pantoliano) - Percy's odious stepfather, who scrounges from his stepson and is mean to Sally. Mr Brunner / Chiron (Pierce Brosnan) - Percy's wheelchair-bound schoolteacher, who is in fact a centaur who's been training heroes for millennia. Luke Castellan (Jake Abel) - An older student at Camp Half-Blood who acts as something of a mentor to Percy when he first arrives there. Medusa - (Uma Thurman) - Ancient monster with a bad habit of turning visitors into stone when they look at her directly in her Gorgon form. See also: Clash of the Titans. WHERE? The film was shot in Vancouver and around British Columbia for the most part, with some scenes taking place at Nashville's full-scale replica of Athens' Parthenon. However, the film is set all over the US. The first section's centred around New York City and New York State, but when Percy begins his quest to search for the Lightning Thief he heads off across country, looking for the Gates to the Underworld in a recording studio in Hollywood. WHEN? Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is out on February 12, 2010 in the US and UK, and February 11, 2010 in Australia. www.empireonline.com/features/what-why-who-when-where/percy-jackson-and-the-olympians/

Multi-talented mentor Tom Pickett (Snip) Recently, he worked on two kid-oriented movies, for director Chris Columbus in Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief, and in the film version of Ramona and Beezus, in which he shared a scene with Sandra Oh, as well as TV roles in Fringe and Psyche, in which he appeared with Gospel Experience. “That’s what I call one of the blue birds – something that comes along that you weren’t expecting” He chuckled, recalling the experience of reading for Percy Jackson, in which he got to play one of five janitors who morph into a five-headed creature. “We’re the principal villains,” he said. “I’m trying out with one group of five actors, and there’s another guy named Keith Dallas in the other group of five, and I hear from an assistant director that he was saying ‘I’m worried about the other black guy.’ Then we wound up cast together, and we couldn’t believe it. It never happens – with two black actors, it’s either one or the other.” www.bclocalnews.com/surrey_area/peacearchnews/lifestyles/60832072.html

Mon, 28 September 2009 at 12:18 pm Logan Lerman: Percy Jackson Is One Of the Coolest Movies Ever Logan Lerman recently sat down with Movieline to chat about his upcoming movie, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and why it’s one of the coolest movies ever. Check out what the 17-year-old had to say: On working with an all-star cast as Greek Gods: “The most nerve-wracking thing about this movie was ‘Are we gonna get a great cast or not?’ I was signed on before everybody else, and what really attracted me to the movie was getting to work with Chris Columbus, because he’s one of the most awesome filmmakers ever. He made the first two Harry Potters, he wrote The Goonies…he’s just contributed so much to what makes me want to be in this business.” On Uma Thurman as Medusa: “she came in and she was so excited to do this role, and I was dying to work with her. She gives such a chilling performance in this movie. The way she looks, she has this really long leathery outfit with crazy snakes coming out all over her head, hissing. I’m horrible at explaining it, but that’s because it’s like nothing I’ve seen before.” On what you can look forward to in the film: “I’m gonna try to not give that much away, and I’m really bad at that. [Laughs] For me, the thing about this film is that it brings back the feeling of Back to the Future, for me. The feeling, the tone of that movie, is what this is for me.
