I was watching ABC tonight and was made to smile broadly at Kevin's appearance in the Percy Jackson ads they were running. I wonder how I'll ever look at him in scrubs on GA and not imagine him as Poseidon. Also have apparently in the process outed my Kevin/Owen Hunt crush to my husband. Seems I'm not as subtle as I thought when pointing at the TV and saying loudly, 'there he is.' P.S. Of course, they were also running the promo for GA episode 6.13. Hee.

How did your husband take the news? ;D
I haven't seen any promotion for the movie on Dutch television so far. Nor on billboards, ads or anything else. I wonder if it will be different after the premiere...

I wonder if it will be different after the premiere... He took it like a man who's been married to me for 15 years - with great good humor and the smile I've loved since I set eyes on him in college. I figured in for a penny, in for a pound, so I also told him there's an action figure. He smirked and asked whether I'll be buying one.

High Resolution Percy Jackson Images Posted by David Sztypuljak on February 5, 2010 · Comments With news breaking that Logan Lerman may be the new Spider-Man, it may detract us from remembering the movie that he’s currently travelling the globe to promote, that of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. I was lucky enough to meet Logan, his director Chris Columbus and his fellow cast members, Alexandra Daddario Brandon, T. Jackson, Steve Coogan and Kevin McKidd earlier in the week at the press conference for the movie. All the footage and audio for those will be up next week but in the meantime, 20th Century Fox have released these super high resolution images that all look fantastic. Synopsis: Trouble-prone Percy Jackson is having problems in high school – but that’s the least of his challenges. It’s the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus seem to have walked out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology texts and into his life. Percy has learned that his real father is Poseidon, god of the sea, which means Percy is a demigod – half human, half god. At the same time, the powerful gods on Olympus are feuding, which could launch a war enveloping our entire planet. Check out these images below and click each of them to see the super hi res version. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is released next Friday, 12th February and keep your eyes peeled over the next week as we’ll be going Percy Jackson crazy. Myth and Match By Ruel S. De Vera Philippine Daily Inquirer DateFirst Posted 22:05:00 02/06/2010 The movie adaptation of ‘Percy Jackson’ is accessible and action-packed; just don’t expect it to be anything like the book IF THERE’S ONE THING THE Greeks are good at, it’s telling a story—and there is a lot of story crammed into “Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” Chris Columbus’ revisionist adaptation of Rick Riordan’s best-selling novel updating Greek mythology. It’s a very post-modern hero’s tale. The troubled teenager Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) discovers he is the son of Poseidon and is accused of stealing Zeus’ lightning bolt. Accompanied by fellow demigod Annabeth Chase (Alexandra Daddario) and the satyr Grover (Brandon T. Jackson), he embarks on a quest to find and return the bolt before the gods go to war and destroy our world, encountering legendary creatures—Minotaur, Hydra, Hellhound, oh, my—across landscapes both real and mythical. Diehard fans of the book will be immensely disappointed: Columbus and screenwriter Craig Titley take a broadsword to Riordan’s novel; the film is so different it sometimes feels like it’s based on another book altogether. Percy is five years older. The main roles have been heavily modified. Not only has the original plot altered significantly, characters and subplots have gone missing (Where have you gone, Ares?). Whatever is left has been condensed heavily. What Columbus summons is a surprisingly straightforward, efficient piece of entertainment. From start to end, “The Lightning Thief” hurtles forward relentlessly in a wave of exposition and setup. Characters are constantly and breathlessly explaining everything that happens, along with helpful zooms. Because of this, much of “The Lightning Thief” inescapably feels a little like “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” in a shiny American setting, but this is more because of Columbus than Potter. Columbus tries to make as mainstream a movie as he can—but this time curiously without the slavish faithfulness he displayed in the first two Potter films. Even with the movie’s heavyweight cast, “The Lightning Thief” is primarily dedicated to its titular protagonist. The telegenic Lerman tackles the hero’s role gamely; he resembles a younger Zac Efron and appears in nearly every scene. Jackson gets the best lines in an unexpectedly energetic turn as Grover. Daddario is pretty and well-lit, but doesn’t have much to do. “The Lightning Thief” benefits from campy, broad turns by the likes of Uma Thurman as a fashionable Medusa and Steve Coogan as a goofy Hades. As Poseidon, Kevin McKidd gets to alternately glower with Sean Bean’s Zeus and play supernatural long-lost dad.“The Lightning Thief” is a Pandora’s Box of fun. Columbus has packed the film with one elaborate action scene after another on the road trip literally to hell, but never straying from firmly family-friendly territory. This is your younger sibling’s Percy Jackson. There is a homogenized, by-the-numbers quality to “The Lightning Thief” that belies the quirkiness that made Riordan’s novel stand out; the novel was much darker and complex. In that sense, Columbus has succeeded in what he wanted to do because “The Lightning Thief” is extremely accessible to any audience, even those who have never read Riordan’s book or have a passing familiarity with Greek mythology. It is an obvious introduction to what the studio hopes for would be a new movie franchise. Columbus seems to be concentrating on appealing to a much younger audience than the young adult books. It is a shame that the film adaptation jettisoned so much of what made the Riordan novel special: Woe unto anyone expecting anything resembling the book. With its nonstop movie momentum and amiable cast, “The Lightning Thief” is solidly enjoyable popcorn fare for all ages, and in particular a good jumping-on point for young viewers relatively unfamiliar with the widescreen wonders of Greek mythology. After all, those stories remain as powerful today even if in a different form. lifestyle.inquirer.net/super/super/view/20100206-251500/Myth-and-Match

Lightning strikes for director Chris Columbus By: Greg Archer Special to The Examiner February 7, 2010 Modern classic: Director Chris Columbus, who grew up with “Jason and the Argonauts” and the original “Clash of the Titans,” loved the idea of making "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief," a movie based on mythical characters. (Courtesy photo) SAN FRANCISCO — There’s nothing like a good jog to spark the imagination, and director Chris Columbus, who’s lived in The City since 1993, enjoys a daily run through his favorite San Francisco neighborhoods. Then do the math: “Rent,” “Bicentennial Man,” “Nine Months,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Home Alone,” plus two Harry Potter films (“Sorcerer’s Stone,” “Chamber of Secrets”) must mean, on some level, that The City plays an integral part in helping the director manifest some of Hollywood’s most memorable outings. “I was so concerned about moving to Hollywood [from New York] and losing my heart and soul as a filmmaker, so living here is the perfect compromise,” Columbus says, “I love the flavor of The City — the food, the sports teams. And really, nobody cares if you’re a filmmaker. Everybody here has a pretty healthy ego.” And a pretty healthy appetite for film, too, which could be fruitful for Columbus — “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” his latest outing, opens Friday. Based on the famed book series by Rick Riordan, the film marries Greek mythology with a modern-day setting. Teen dream-to-be Logan Lerman takes on the title role of a guy suddenly dealing with the unruly Gods of Mount Olympus. (Monsters included.) It seems Zeus’ lightning bolt was stolen and young Percy is the main suspect. Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Kevin McKidd, Steve Coogan and Rosario Dawson come along for the ride. Columbus, who’s in his 50s, was jazzed about directing the film, mainly because he grew up watching movies like “Jason and the Argonauts,” “The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad” and the original “Clash of the Titans.” “When I thought about actually recreating classic creatures of Greek mythology using modern technology, that was exciting to me,” he says. “And the concept that the Greek gods have relocated to America and now live in the underbelly of our society — I thought that was a fantastic idea.” As for his knack for taking on good stories and showcasing them so well, the real trick, he says, is “knowing that the films that worked are the ones that I’ve poured most of my intense passion and obsession into. If I ever tried to make a film and have fun — just fun — it never usually works.” He’s referring to 2009’s “I Love You, Beth Cooper” and how it failed to live up to expectations: “You just have to sweat blood and tears to really connect with the audience.” IF YOU GO Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief Starring Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Steve Coogan, Rosario Dawson, Catherine Keener, Uma Thurman, Ray Winstone Written by Craig Titley, Chris Columbus Directed by Chris Columbus Rated PG Running time 2 hours San Francisco Examiner: www.sfexaminer.com/entertainment/Lightning-strikes-for-director-Chris-Columbus-83719297.html#ixzz0en5CcHFp

Percy Jackson 2 – Sequel Plans There’s been a lot of Percy Jackson 2 talk in recent weeks. So what has been said and how likely is a sequel? There are five books in the Percy Jackson series, so far. The next installment is ‘The Sea Of Monsters’ which sees Percy, Annabeth, and his half-brother Tyson the cyclopes sailing across a dangerous ocean to save the kidnapped Grover and retrieve the Golden Fleece (the only thing that can stop Camp Half-Blood being made vulnerable to an attack by the Titans). At the London press conference last week director Chris Columbus said “If we are successful enough, I’d love to make another film almost immediately with these guys. We had a wonderful time. I love the enthusiasm and lack of cynicism. I want to go back to work quickly.” And despite recent Spider-Man casting rumours, it doesn’t sound like star Logan Lerman is going anywhere either. “I’m invested into the whole series. I’m crazy about the story and crazy about the character, I’d love to do all the films.” The reaction to the first film has been mixed. Critics gave it a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Casual members of the public seemed to half enjoy it. But many fans are angry. According to the feedback on this site and elsewhere, the book wasn’t just compressed (ala Harry Potter), it was “butchered”, its “heart taken out” with major plot re-routing, some characters altered beyond recognition, other key ones dropped entirely, etc. How this will affect repeat viewings and word of mouth we will have to see. Lightning Thief has made $31 million on its opening weekend in the US. Not terrible, but not spectacular either. Internationally it opened with $28 million, which is underwhelming. It cost around $95 million. As of today, it needs to hold on well domestically and internationally to become a hit. If it does, there will be more. www.movie-moron.com/?p=11134&cpage=1

Butchered is a good way to put it. I hope Chris Columbus et al will take heed and direct any future movies to the tween and older crowd vs the kiddie set. Tweens were the intended audience after all and they will help determine if Lightning Thief deserves a sequel(s).

for those who speak Spanish, here is a review of Percy Jackson in one of the biggest newspapers in Argentina. www.lanacion.com.ar/nota.asp?nota_id=1234249Summary : movie is good, it is recommended, but it could be better (considering how good the book is). "The movie is not boring, but the source material provided more to work on it. It doesn't help that the dubbing to spanish is very defficient. The film is targeted to teen agers and all the dialogue is treated as something you need to fill space between fights.. now I need to find out some videos with Poseidon speaking in Spanish!! So far I have only found them in Spanish - from Spain - which is slightly different ....

www.studiodaily.com/blog/?p=2403XYZ RGB: Scans for Percy Jackson and the Olympians By Debra Kaufman February 3, 2010 – 10:37 pm XYZ RGB, a scanning facility founded in 2001 in Ottawa, Canada, has been busy. First, there’s the new Los Angeles office, in the Marina Del Rey area. “It acts as a satellite office to our Ottawa headquarters,” says COO Troy Robinson. “It’s convenient for clients.” The company has most recently used its high-res 3D scanning to capture actors in costume and props for Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, which debuts February 12. The scans were used as a basis for creating digital doubles and stunt people in this action-adventure film. In addition to actors and costumes, XYZ RGB scanned all the weapons, including swords, shields and bows and arrows. Robinson reveals that XYZ RGB took their scanning equipment to Vancouver, where the production was shooting. “We’re very, very portable,” says Robinson, who is getting ready to fly to New York and then Montreal. “We only rarely do scanning in Ottawa.” Since the company’s founding–when it created a niche in the VFX industry by providing 3D scanning for the two Matrix sequels, Reloaded and Revolution– it has developed capture systems enabling instant full body scanning, props, automobiles as well as buildings and sets. Their scanning services are used by the gaming, VFX and inspection/manufacturing industries and others requiring high-end scan data including the automobile and reverse engineering industries. Among its other credits, XYZ RGB scanned faces for the Fight Night 3 game, the dragons for PlayStation’s “Lair”, dinosaurs for Kong, and full body scanning for GI Joe.
