Episode 10 - All By Myself My mother called it the greatest and most terrifying moment in her life -standing at the head of the surgical table, knowing that the patient's life depends on you and you alone. It's what we all dream about. Because the first person that gets to fly solo in the OR...kind of a badass. We enter the world alone and we leave it alone. And everything that happens in between, we owe it to ourselves to find a little company. We need help. We need support, otherwise we're in it by ourselves. Strangers, cut off from each other. And we forget just how connected we all are. So instead, we choose love. We choose life. And for a moment, we feel just a little bit less alone.

See, this is my favorite VO of the whole season.
The ironic use of the word badass - at least given a nickname Owen has acquired in the fanbase - considering Cristina was supposed to get the first solo surgery. And, considering if she hadn't been cut and finally let loose about her feelings as a result, then we wouldn't have gotten the fabulous scene at the end of this episode in which they finally declare themselves to each other.
While the somewhat manufactured fight between Cristina and Meredith lead us to these moments, this VO highlights our need for connections. Finally, by moving beyond the boundaries of her friendship with Meredith and by moving out of her post-Burke relationship hibernation, Cristina is able to envision her future and to reach for it. This episode, IMO, was about emotional courage for Cristina and she grabbed it and ran with it...straight to the vent.

Thanks Ella, some nice thoughts.
I think the notion of being connected and finding company resonates throughout the season for all characters, except George.

Episode 11 - Wish You Were Here We all get at least 1 good wish a year over the candles of our birthday. Some of us throw in more, on eyelashes, fountains, lucky stars. And every now and then, one of those wishes comes true. So what then? Is it as good as we hoped? Do we bask in the warm glow of our happiness? Or do we just notice we've got a long list of wishes waiting to be wished? We don't wish for the easy stuff. We wish for big things. Things that are ambitious, out of reach. We wish because we need help and we're scared. And we know we may be asking too much. We still wish though, because sometimes they come true.

Episode 12 - Sympathy for the Devil My mother used to say this about residency - "It takes a year to learn how to cut. It takes a lifetime to learn not to." Of all of the tools on the surgical tray, sound judgment is the trickiest one to master. And without it, we're all just toddlers running around with ten blades. We're human. We make mistakes. We misestimate. We call it wrong. But when a surgeon makes a bad judgment call, it's not as simple. People get hurt. They bleed. So we struggle over every stitch. We agonise over every suture. Because the snap judgments, the ones that come to us quickly and easily without hesitation, they're the ones that haunt us forever.

If it's not a pain in the neck, I'd like to suggest to add the title near the number of every episode, in order to see well if the voiceovers are connected to the titles and to have clear in mind the episode.
In the next season I have to pay more attention to the voiceover at the beginning, because it anticipates a lot what follows. The little voiceover in the end, instead, usually, it's very moving.

oh that sends chills down my spine... and is precisely why I think being a doctor is a calling that stress.... I think the guys in Grey's show this stress very well... and also amazing that someone like Owen with PSTD can find this a good environment to contain his problem and he can deal with that stress.... amazing
thanks Kaz

Hi Dani I had intended to add the titles originally but I couldn't remember them off by heart and didn't have the time to go searching. I will try and do it at some point. If you have time, you could send me a list of all the episode titles and I can just go back through and edit. Only if you wanted to though. K.

Episode 13 - Stairway to Heaven I believe in heaven. I also believe in hell. I've never seen either but I believe they exist. They have to exist. Because without a heaven, without a hell, we're all just headed for limbo. Heaven, hell, limbo. Noone really knows where we're going. Or what's waiting for us when we get there. But the one thing we can say for sure, with absolute certainty, is that there are moments that take us to another place. Moments of heaven on earth. And maybe for now, that's all we need to know.

Oh, thanks Kaz! Now I read again attentively all the voiceovers: I could understand better the intents of these episodes and even what could happen in the sixth season depending on what the next voiceovers will tell us. Thanks again.

In the 13 episode, actually, there are often moments of heaven followed by moments of hell for our characters. And when you are waiting for one of them, you stay in a sort of limbo, thinking of what will be the next moment that will solve the situation, the moment of hell or the moment of heaven? And you discover that sometimes a moment of hell for someone could be a moment of heaven for someone else.

Nice thoughts.

Episode 14 - Beat Your Heart Out Any first year med student knows that an increased heart rate is a sign of trouble. A racing heart could indicate anything - from a panic disorder, to something much much more serious. A heart that flutters or one that skips a beat could be a sign of a secret affliction. Or it could indicate romance, which is the biggest trouble of all. It seems we have no control whatsoever over our own hearts. Conditions can change without warning. Romance can make the heart pound, just like panic can. And panic can make it stop cold in your chest. It's no wonder doctors spend so much time trying to keep the heart stable. To keep it slow, steady, regular. To stop the heart from pounding out of your chest, from the dread of something terrible or the anticipation of something else entirely.

I wonder if EP will be doing all the voiceovers for Season 6 if she's on maternity leave.

I wonder if EP will be doing all the voiceovers for Season 6 if she's on maternity leave. That's a good point. Maybe not. A couple of the voiceovers this season were done by others (Alex and Denny) so it's not uncommon.

Thanks Kaz.
So we can hope in a different voice in every voiceover! I'm particularly interested in a voiceover of a certain guy who has been in Irak, his name is... ah, yes, Owen Hunt!
I could lose my mind! A Kevin's voiceover (I hope very poetic) like in 16 Years of Alchohol!!

In 'Beat your heart out' the voiceover is very clear. We have two panic attacks: one of the dinosaur (LOL) and one of Owen. But for Owen and Cristina their hearts beat a lot even for love... 'I love the back of your neck' scene, the 'slow motion walking' scene...

Yes Genius, I love the juxtaposition of romance and panic in that episode. Both make your heart race but to different ends.
