FRIDAY 21st AUGUST 9.00am-10.00am.
I run a small ghostly walking tour company in Edinburgh (The Cadies & Witchery Tours). It’s a highly skilled job jumping out of doorways late at night to scare tourists. The tours have been running since 1984, which means we’ve now been wandering the streets of Edinburgh for 25 years.
More recently I have been producing films. The most successful one to date has been ‘Breadmakers’ (Dir. Yasmin Fedda), a short film about people with learning disabilities who work in an Edinburgh bakery. I’m presently working on a documentary about the little known (until now) Scottish artist William McLaren (Dir. Jim Hickey).
One of my best achievements to date was getting my first (and only) novel ‘Grave Robbers’ published by Luath Press in 1999. Remarkable, as I don’t read books. To be fair, I did read one book at school, 'The Great Escape'. I’m also very proud of my guide book 'What's Under the Kilt? (brilliantly designed by Dan Rich of Juicy Design).
I couldn’t resist applying to the One & Other project. I liked the concept from the start. It’s a beautifully simple idea. It’s unique, diverse and democratic. It has become addictive viewing. I'll appear on the plinth in the guise of the pale-faced ghostly highwayman Adam Lyal (deceased) who was executed in Edinburgh in 1811.
I will use my hour on the plinth to celebrate 25 years of The Cadies & Witchery Tours. This will include announcing to the Square the 43 people who have played the role of Adam Lyal (deceased) since his resurrection in 1985. The list includes famous folk like Dave Martin, Dr Simon Taylor and Kevin McKidd.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hope you're still awake.
