Writer's blog Pete Nowalk on "Can't Fight Biology"... Original Airdate: 10-14-10 Here’s something not many people know about me. I’m a good dancer. Okay, that’s a bit modest. I’m an amazing dancer. I went to Juilliard on a scholarship. I trained with the same teacher as Baryshnikov. Currently I perform with a Los Angeles troupe that specializes in a combination of hip-hop, jazz, and disco. I am the head soloist. That’s a lie. I lied. I’m not a dancer. I just wish I was. I want to be like one of those kids on So You Think You Can Dance. I just can’t dance. Because when I do I resemble Elaine on Seinfeld. In fact I’d call it flailing more than dancing. I even punched a girl in the face when I flailed too hard at a club one time. I blame my parents. They didn’t pass down dancing genes. They passed down chicken leg genes. Yeah, you should see me in a pair of shorts. Legs only good for one thing – running. Not dancing. But oh how I love to bust out my bold moves on the dancefloor... I digress. Genes were kind of the theme of this episode. Well, biology to be more specific, but genes are part of that. We wanted to explore that age-old question of nature vs. nurture. What makes us who we are? Is it our DNA? Our upbringing? A combo platter?? What better way to explore this question than through Meredith. We’ve known since the pilot that Meredith, like Ellis, might carry the gene for Early Onset Alzheimer’s. She just hasn’t gotten tested for the gene yet. I get it. It’d be terrifying to find out you had an expiration date. Think about it. What would you do? Be like Meredith’s patient Lila and spend the rest of your life travelling and sleeping around? Ditch your job and pursue the dreams you put on hold? Or would you stay the same – setting your alarm everyday, exercising routinely, hoping that some amazing doctors will find a cure before D-day comes? See – expiration dates are a lot of pressure. It’s so much easier to think you’ve got years left to mess around and sleep late and put off carpe diem-ing until tomorrow. That’s probably what Meredith’s been thinking for the last six seasons. But now she wants to have a baby. She has more than just herself to think about. And, of course, now she finds out she has a hostile uterus. MAN ALIVE!! Meredith Grey doesn’t get many breaks in life. Maybe it’s because of her upbringing, or maybe it’s something wonky about her DNA, but someone in the world has decided to deal her tons o’ crap. Personally, it’s what makes me love her. No matter how many crappy things come her way, Meredith keeps on living and fighting and taking risks. She’s got balls. Derek reminds her that, expiration date or not, there’s no reason to think about it. None of us can know what’ll come tomorrow so why not just throw caution to the wind and be. So those test results? They’ll stay in the lab, out of sight and out of mind. I’m relieved. Cristina’s got her own set of crap to deal with lately. First up, house-hunting. Biologically, there are two types of people in the world – those that buy fixer uppers and those that don’t. (Okay, maybe not biologically, but I’m trying to weave a common thread through this blog so go with me). I’m not a fixer upper kind of person. My fridge currently contains a bottle of ketchup and three beers. I can barely bring myself to grocery shop so how the hell would I ever manage picking out tile for a bathroom? Cristina’s the same. Still, she buys the firehouse…for Owen. This tells us a lot about where she’s at mentally. She’s lost when it comes to surgery but not with her marriage. Instead she’s throwing herself in deeper. It’s what the worm guy said – when you love something you hold on to it. For Cristina, that’s Owen. She’s becoming a fixer upper person for him. So maybe it’s nurture after all. (Btw, if you want to know more about why someone would eat worms check out Medical Research Meg’s blog: abc.go.com/shows/greys-anatomy/medical-case-file)Let’s pose the nature vs. nurture question for Alex. Dude is a good Peds surgeon. This is a little unexpected. You’d think plastics or trauma surgery would be the specialty he’d thrive in. He’s tough, he doesn’t get emotional, he’s even a little insensitive sometimes. But as he showed with our dancer kid, Jake, Alex has a way with kids. He knew Jake needed to dance for Callie and Arizona, even though he personally couldn’t care less about ballet. In fact, he probably thinks it’s lame. But Alex got that dance is what makes Jake Jake. It’s who he is. Part of his biology. Who knows why he ended up this way, especially with parents so different from him, but he is a dancer through and through. Alex was able to save his leg because of it. So maybe it’s in Alex’s nature to be a good Peds surgeon. Lexie’s Meredith’s sister. Her biological sister. They share blood. So why the hell is Meredith treating April more like a sister than Lexie? That’s the question running through Lexie’s mind this entire episode. She doesn’t ask Mer this right away though. Instead she gets jealous. And hilarious. I love watching Lexie be mean. It’s probably because I’m the youngest child of three. The youngest always dreams of the day they’ll have the power they never had growing up. I’ll show you, basically. That’s what I feel like Lexie’s doing to April in this episode. She’s had to suffer under Mer and Cristina for years. Now someone else can suffer. That would be April. Poor April. She tries so hard. I don’t blame her. She just wants to get along. To belong. Her best friend just died and now she’s living in this strange house. A chore wheel is exactly the thing that will bond her to everyone! What I really like about April in this episode is that somewhere, maybe even if it’s not conscious, she gets that Lexie’s anger isn’t personal, that she’s just the innocent victim. Luckily, Lexie eventually admits this and confronts Meredith. Cause who knows what pent up rage can do to you? Hopefully not make you drive into a Laundromat. (P.S. if you’re getting to that point, let me suggest talking to the person you’re mad at. And some therapy. Therapy never hurts.) By the way, how awesome was Frances Conroy as the jilted Eleanor in this Laundromat story? I’m a big fan of Six Feet Under so I was psyched when she agreed to take the part. And that confession scene gives me the chills. Let’s talk about my favorite threesome on our show. Callie, Arizona, and Mark. As much as we’ve never stated it before I think it’s always been clear that Arizona and Mark don’t love each other. They’re as different as two people can be. For Callie, this bites. No one likes to be caught between their best friend and significant other. Usually these situations end up with the best friend getting the boot. Callie’s not that kind of friend though. Mark’s been there for her through everything. So she pushes Arizona to try to be his friend. The result? Arizona asks Mark on a date. What the hell did they talk about on this date? Callie, I’m guessing. What else do they have in common? Last but not least, Jackson got shirtless. As you saw, that boy has good genes. Great genes. Not a chicken leg gene in sight. I really have nothing more to say about this except… You’re welcome. Have a great week everyone www.greyswriters.com/

What is with all the neat endings on "Grey's Anatomy" lately? When did it become an easy, tidy show where deep traumas are sown up like surgical sutures? Last week, the Neuro-Shepherd siblings made up all cozy and nice after decades of estrangement, and now this week's theme, "Can't fight biology," seems to set up Cristina's imminent return to the operating room, progressing from baby steps to hard-to-believe bonding with a biologist who experimented on himself by ingesting parasitic worms to find a cure for asthma. He undergoes surgery, killing the worms and three years of research, but he wants to do more research after his bowels recovered. He implores her to understand: "Because I love what I do. You don't find something you love that much and let it go. Throw yourself into it, deeper." Even for Grey's, this was laying it on thick. Worm guy got through to Cristina when no one else could? And she's ok with Owen wanting to fix-up an old firehouse for their first home together? That's crazy making, especially when said patient delivered lines like: "Let the worms go. I know who I am. Please save the worms." But maybe in the Seattle Grace world it makes sense, because, as Meredith tells her sister, with a smile on her not-insane face: "You're not crazy, Lexie. You're a Grey." This episode meandered, trying to find a foothold in several plotlines that were better than Tylenol PM at making us drowsy with boring, with the occasional wake-up eye candy of Avery taking his scrub top off. Gratuitous ab-shot aside, this was an episode that can be skipped if you're looking to clear out some space on your DVR. But if you do feel like watching, it's not a total write-off. Residents and interns co-mingle in the hodge-podge halfway house for damaged people that is the Grey house, which seems to delight Meredith and baffle Derek. Derek baffles us, too. He's suddenly taking everything with a laissez-faire attitude hoping Meredith will go along with his plans to populate the planet with perfectly wavy-haired and brilliant progeny. Meredith wouldn't be Meredith if she weren't having her own issues with that, especially stuck on the notion that her uterus is "hostile," which refers to some "baby squishing fibroids." She's also scared she has the Alzheimer's gene, but she finds courage and inspiration from a patient with Huntington's disease and gets tested for the gene. We like the new Meredith who isn't afraid to tell her sister she sat by her side for 36 hours when she was committed to the psych ward. But we're still a little wary of how she can reveal to Lexie so nonchalantly that she suffered a miscarriage, as a way to assuage some sibling jealousy over Meredith's perceived tightness with April. Maybe we shouldn't get so worked up about our characters finding some peace and progress, and accept Meredith's voice-over: "Life changes us...We learn from our mistakes… For better or worse, we find ways to become more than our biology." At least she's evolving and not pouting for several episodes, letting Derek relax her into trying to make a go of having, and being, a family. We can already picture a little McDreamy or McDreamette, playing with her or his own Anatomy Jane. Don't you? theclicker.todayshow.com/_news/2010/10/15/5295203-plenty-of-neat-tidy-endings-on-greys-anatomy

GREY'S ANATOMY "Can't Fight Biology" GREY’S ANATOMY “Can’t Fight Biology” Season 7 Espisode 4 – This week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy found Meredith and Derek receiving some hostile news about a possible pregnancy while Owen and Christina go house hunting. When Meredith is told by her OB/GYN that she has a hostile uterus, she is really not happy. She gets over it enough to joke about it later with April and Christina, but I think it really bothers her that there is one little part of her body that is preventing her from carrying Derek’s baby. Not everyone knows about the miscarriage, however April was there when it happened. Naturally, she has kept up on what is developing in that area much to the dismay of Lexie who feels left out. Her feelings fester even more when April, who has been living at Meredith’s house, suggests a “chore wheel” since the men are messy. Lexie thinks Meredith will think it is a terrible idea and when Meredith thinks it is brilliant, Lexie’s jealousy grows. Can someone tell me why all of these people are living with Meredith and Derek? It used to be just Lexie and Alex which seemed crowded enough. But now April and Avery? There aren’t even enough bedrooms as I am sure Lexie can attest to since she is sleeping in the attic. I agree with Derek, that is not working out. Christina and Owen are looking for a house together since they need to get out of Callie’s place. Owen has dreams of renovating an old dilapidated firehouse. What is with making firehouses into houses now? Is it a new trend? We just saw this same storyline last week on Better With You. Must be a man thing. Unfortunately, Christina is currently not passionate about anything. She is walking through life like a zombie. She has agreed to take baby steps to get closer to becoming Yang again. I have to say, though, I do not think she will ever by the Yang she once was. Bailey takes Yang on her service and they encounter a man who is doing research into preventing asthma with worms that you ingest. Gross. Now, of course, he is sick and the worms have caused a bowel obstruction. He begs not to have the surgery and then begs not to have the worms destroyed as they have been inside him for a year and his research has lasted three years. Alas, the worms are destroyed to keep him alive. The man tells Yang he will just start over despite the fact that it might kill him. When she asks him why he would do such a thing, he tells her that he has finally found his passion and purpose in life and you just don’t give that up. Paging Dr. Yang – a life lesson just arrived. Yang is not the only one with a life lesson. Meredith receives her own in the form of a victim of a car versus laundromat accident. Turns out the woman as Huntington’s disease. Huntington’s is a fatal disease that slowly eats away at the person’s brain until they eventually die. The disease can be traced by a gene. The woman is aware but wants to go to Brazil before she dies. She is given a clean bill of health at the hospital but Meredith notices she has chorea in her hand, which is a shakiness that is uncontrollable. It is also the first sign that the disease is in its fatal progression. Meredith tells her to tell her doctor, but the woman doesn’t want anyone to stand in her way of her dream trip. Meredith finally gives her pills to help the chorea with the understanding that she will follow up with her doctor when she returns. The talk about genetic disorders makes Meredith think about her mother’s Alzheimer’s and she asks Yang to take her blood to determine if she has the gene. Derek does not think this is a good idea. I am not sure what side of that I fall on. Would you want to know your time may be limited? More minor subplots involve Arizona not liking Mark and feeling like he is always invading her and Callie’s lives. It is actually Karev that encourages her to get to know Sloan who is not a bad guy. Our little Alex may be growing up. Teddy is fed up with Avery who is only half assing his job and then trying to use his sexiness and charm to float. When she finally confronts him, she is pleasantly surprised by his knowledge and one has to wonder why he feels the need to downplay it? The other medical plots involved a ballet dancer who was going to lose of one of his legs to cancer. With a lead from April and a little research, Alex was able to find an answer for the kid to possibly keep his leg and keep his dream of dancing. Finally, the woman that hit the laundromat with her car turned out to have done it intentionally. In what was a very sad and horrific story, we find that her husband had left her for someone else months ago and when she spotted him doing the woman’s laundry, she just snapped. In the saddest moment, the woman says she feels releived after her confession since Lexie and April cannot tell anyone due to the physician/patient privilege. Unfortunately, that privilege doesn’t extend to nonmedical conversations. What did you think of this week’s epsiode of Grey’s Anatomy? I love that even as a walking zombie, Christina has not lost all of humor. After she buys the firehouse for Owen and he tells her he doesn’t know what to say, Christina responds “Our house has a firepole in it. What more is there to say?” What were your favorite moments of this week’s episode? Do you think Arizona will eventually grow to like Sloan? Do you think Christina will wake up out of her slumber and get back to her passion? Share your thoughts and favorite moments in the comments below. www.daemonstv.com/2010/10/15/greys-anatomy-cant-fight-biology-review/

“Biology sucks sometimes.” That it does, Meredith Grey. At the beginning of Grey’s Anatomy this week, we learned that Mer’s miscarriage may not have been caused solely by the psycho killer with a gun rampaging Seattle Grace last season. Apparently she has a hostile uterus. That means she could have trouble conceiving or miscarry again. Derek’s reaction of “Think of all the fun we’ll have trying” [to conceive] was a little to lighthearted for me. That’s bad news, Derek! Stop being so happy-go-lucky! You “have fun trying” when you attempt to do a trick on your skateboard and scrape your knee every time. You do not relish in the fun you’ll have knowing that it could result in another miscarriage. OK. End of rant. Meredith’s uterus wasn’t the only hostile environment, though. There was her house, where Lexie’s jealousy over April was reaching a boiling point. There was Callie’s house, where Arizona’s annoyance with Mark was reaching a boiling point. And there was the hospital, where Cristina was abandoning her talent while Avery was trying to skate by on his looks. I have officially decided that I like April. She’s the new Izzie. She lightens the mood when Meredith and Cristina get all twisty and she’s sweet like Izzie, but hasn’t been as much of a pushover lately. And I like how she gets under Lexie’s skin. My favorite line of the night was when Cristina responded to Lexie whining about how annoying April is with “Really? I find you more annoying.” I really like the new friendship between April and Meredith, but I was also really touched when Meredith told Lexie that she’d been at her bedside the whole time she was in psych, and that she wasn’t crazy – she’s a Grey. Cristina seemed to be making baby steps in getting over her PTSD, with some help from her medical case of the week – a guy who was willing to risk his life to save his really, really gross research that involved ingesting worms. She also bought a house with Owen, and it has a fireman’s pole. Once it’s fixed up, it might even be cooler than Meredith’s house, which I’ve always loved. The other two medical stories this week were pretty good. I loved the dancer kid who opted for a risky surgery over having his leg amputated. The older woman who drove her car into a laundromat because she was furious with her ex-husband didn’t do much for me – I actually laughed when I realized she thought April and Lexie were legally obligated to protect all her secrets – but the injured innocent bystander who had Huntington’s was really interesting. She had great chemistry with Meredith, and I didn’t make the connection between her illness and Meredith’s chance of inheriting Alzheimer’s until Mer asked for the test. Callie spent most of the episode trying to convince Arizona that she should give Mark a chance even though he always stares at her boobs. It was Alex who gave her the final shove she needed though. He showed his sweet side, telling her how Mark risked his own life to save Alex’s even though Alex was sleeping with Lexie. And then he was back to his normal self, telling her that she shouldn’t be offended by Mark looking at her boobs because they’re awesome boobs, and Alex stares at them too. It was very Barney Stinson. I would kind of like to see Arizona and Mark become friends since they’re such opposites. I love Avery (and not just for his dreamy eyes – he makes some good jokes, too) so I hope he gets his act together. I want him to be a good doctor, and his attempt to flirt with Teddy to get surgery time was way too obvious. And I want more scenes where he’s not wearing a shirt. And yeah, I know these requests counteract each other. What did you think of Grey’s? Did Cristina make a teensy bit of a breakthrough? How long before she’s officially back? And is April growing on you even a little? Sound off below! insidepulse.com/2010/10/15/greys-anatomy-episode-7-4-review/

So here's the thing. Every episode can't be a barn burner. Not possible. Grey's Anatomy has been on a real hot streak as of late. If you count the season 6 finale there were basically five crackerjack episodes in a row, but that trend has now ended. To be fair, there wasn't anything really wrong with "Can't Fight Biology." It wasn't horrible and it wasn't wonderful. It was ... fine. It was one of those transitional episodes that moves things along without setting the world on fire. I actually believe that in retrospect it will hold up pretty well. It suffers a bit by immediate comparison to the latest episodes but will rebound over time because it's still a tremendous improvement over the erratic season 6. In that spirit, let's concentrate on the major developments. The Twisted Sisters are Still a Mess One of the trademark GA storytelling devices is the "patient case as parallel to the doctors' lives." This week the "patient anvils," as I've heard them called, were even heavier than usual. Meredith was dealing with a patient with Huntington's disease (which ranks right up there with ALS, in my opinion, as one of the most awful ways one could die), which stirs up her anxiety that she will have Alzheimer's disease like her mother before her. This coupled with the news that she has a "hostile uterus" and may never be able to carry a child to term makes for a very stressful day. Thankfully, Derek is wise as he suggests that they stop worrying about the future and "just live." Together. In the meantime, Cristina is dealing with a patient who ingested worms in the name of research. I'm leaving it at that because you either watched the show and already know the details or you didn't watch the show and you are, therefore, on your own. Anyway, Cristina is still struggling mightily with her PTSD, but it's clear that the patient's impassioned speech about hanging on to what matters most to you had an effect on her. And she and Owen will be living in a renovated firehouse. Random, I know, but that last scene where it's revealed that she doesn't much care where they live but she bought the house because Owen loves it and she loves him? Kill me now. Sigh. Karev Finally Gets a Story I know that Alex Karev can act like a jerk sometimes (OK, a lot of the time), but cut the guy some slack, OK? We know by now that a lot of Alex's bravado is a defense mechanism to mask the pain and hurt in his hidden heart of gold. I really do love him, so it was nice to see him have a story. I'm not quite sure the writers knew what to do with him at first in a post-Izzie GA. My theory is that Katherine Heigl's abrupt departure last season threw his story into temporary chaos, but my hope is that we will now have the pleasure of watching Alex work in pediatrics, his chosen specialty. I'm also hoping he'll cool it a bit on the romance front, because in my opinion Alex needs a breather. He needs to heal (from being shot and from losing Izzie), and he needs to focus on being a doctor for awhile. There, I've said it. No new chicks for Karev for the time being. It's Getting Crowded in Here and the Downside of Being Pretty Finally, there were crowds galore in this episode. Alex, Lexie, April and Jackson are all living at Meredith and Derek's house. Crowded! Mark isn't with Lexie and is overcompensating by spending a lot of time with BFF, Callie. Arizona's not pleased. Crowded! Meredith appears to be all chummy with April now at the expense of her relationship with half-sister, Lexie. Bottom line: Lexie's jealous. Crowded! In fact, the only times where a crowd works wondrously are those awesome group scenes, another GA storytelling construct that I love. Pretty much any scene with Meredith, Cristina, Alex, Lexie, April and Jackson is comedic gold. And, speaking of Jackson, how sad and kind of pathetic was it that Jackson Avery felt so insecure that he resorted to faux-flirting with Teddy(!) to get ahead in the OR? We learned last season that Jackson resented being underestimated because of his looks, but in a pinch he played the Hot Resident card, only to see the error of his ways. www.buddytv.com/articles/greys-anatomy/greys-anatomy-fan-columnist-on-38398.aspx

On this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy, Meredith faces whether she can still have children after the miscarriage. Meanwhile, Lexie gets jealous of Meredith and April's friendship, Jackson tries to use his charms on Teddy to get ahead in the program, and it's Bailey's turn to help Cristina recover from the shooting. The episode opens on the very full Grey house, which includes Jackson, April, Lexie, Alex, Meredith and Derek all under one roof. Speaking of full frat houses, Mark interrupts Callie and Arizona's morning make-out session much to the latter's disappointment and frustration. Elsewhere, Cristina and Owen try to find a place of their own, but Cris isn't really into it. MEREDITH and DEREK: Meredith and Derek discover that the miscarriage was not only due to the stresses of the shooting, but also because Mer has a "hostile uterus." While there is a treatment, there is also a chance she could have another miscarriage. Mer takes on a Huntington's case where she discovers the patient is a lot further along than she's admitting. After hearing that the patient's mother had died for Huntington's, Mer decides to get tested for the Alzheimer's gene, which she fears her own mother has passed onto her. Derek tells Meredith that she shouldn't get tested for Alzheimer's, but she worries she'll pass the gene onto their child, if they're even able to have one with her "hostile uterus." He doesn't care about all the tests and labs: "Let's just live," he says. "Whatever happens, happens." BAILEY and CRISTINA: At the hospital, the Chief attempts to convince Bailey to get rid of the clinic so they can save money. Bailey only has enough fight in her for one thing today: Having Cristina on her service. Their case involves a man who swallows worms in attempts to find a cure for asthma. Unfortunately, the worms have obstructed his bowels. The patient initially refuses surgery until his condition worsens. He pleads with Cristina to at least save the worms, but they're destroyed during the surgery. Crushed, the patient decides he wants to do the test again, explaining that he loves what he does and wouldn't give it up for the world, which leaves a lasting impression on Cris. Cristina ends up buying the old firehouse they checked out in the beginning of the episode, popping a bottle of champagne when Owen arrives. "You love this place and I love you," she says. Fire pole in her house: FTW. LEXIE and APRIL Little Grey is having trouble with April taking over her space, and it doesn't help when the pair is forced to take on a case together. On top of finding out that April wants to move in the Grey house full-time, Lexie also discovers that April and Meredith are keeping secrets. April continues to one-up Lexie throughout the day, which forces Lexie's hand to take a stand with the patient. It backfires, though, when they discover the patient was never really sick, rather, she purposely drove her car into a laundry mat to try to hurt her ex-husband. Lexie goes off on Meredith, saying she's upset that she and April become so close, which leads to Meredith admitting she had a miscarriage. "You're not crazy, Lexie; you're a Grey," Mer says. In the end, Lexie finds some common ground with April, though does admit she'll kill her if she puts up a chore wheel. TEDDY and JACKSON: After Arizona begs Teddy to start hooking up with Mark again, Teddy complains that she doesn't have time to sleep with anyone because of her inept resident. Jackson, said resident, overhears this, including the part where Teddy confesses he's good to look at. When Meredith is able to edge Jackson out of the Huntington's surgery, he starts to use his sexuality and gorgeous blue eyes to land a place on her surgical team. Even through surgery, Jackson continues to use his charms in an attempt to do more advanced procedures, but Teddy doesn't budge. Later, Teddy finds a shirtless Jackson in the locker room and tries to test him on her upcoming surgery. "Good, I'm relieved," she says when he's able to describe the procedure. "You're actually more than the pretty face you make yourself out to be." She warns him that if he tries to flirt with her again, there will be consequences. ARIZONA, CALLIE and ALEX: Alex, Arizona and Callie treat a cancer patient who is also a dancer. Unfortunately, his chemo therapy didn't work and they'll have to amputate his leg. The patient shows the doctors what he can do on the dance floor in hopes they'll build him a leg that will let him continue to move that way. Alex uncovers a surgery where they can remove the bone, zap it with radiation and put it back in. The patient asks Alex's opinion on what he would do. "If it was my arm and I couldn't operate anymore, I'd do everything that I could to keep it," he says. The surgery ends up being successful. Arizona's continued frustration with Mark makes Callie realize she hates him. Arizona later admits it during surgery, noting that one of the major problems is that he stares at her boobs all the time. "Because they're good boobs," Callie retorts. Alex tells Arizona that it's not just Mark who stares at her boobs, so she should just deal. Arizona decides to go to dinner just with Mark in hopes of forming a bond. www.tvguide.com/Episode-Recaps/greys-anatomy/Grey-Anatomy-Episode-1024385.aspx
