On Grey’s Anatomy “Adrift and at Peace” episode tonight, we started off with Derek and Cristina heading off on a fishing trip. Apparently, that’s what she needs right now? Certainly, Derek doesn’t seem to mind. Meanwhile Callie lets Mark know that although romping in the bedroom with him is great, it just makes her miss Arizona more. Mark reveals that he was thinking of Lexie while they were doing it, and that really pisses off Callie, so she throws him out of the shower. Women! With Cristina and Derek safely packed off on their fishing trip, Meredith and Owen meet the ambulance for today’s case. It turns out to be a woman who fell off a ravine and landed on her husband. She’s fine except for a lacerated ear, but he looks like he’s about nine months pregnant with internal bleeding. Off to the OR for him! Meanwhile, Miranda is wowing the residents by removing a guy’s gall bladder through his mouth. Personally I think I’ll be impressed when they can deliver babies that way. Until then, whatever. She challenges them to come up with a protocol that reduces post-op fistulas, and the one who gets the best protocol gets to do the next oral gall bladder removal surgery. Hmmm. They all jumped at it, but I’m still thinking it over. Is there room for negotiation? Out on the lake, Cristina is rapidly discovering that sitting silently on a boat while fish are not biting is not her thing. Derek is rapidly discovering that she makes a very BAD fishing companion, but evidently that was the plan. She has to turn her mind off and just fish, and clearly Derek ain’t gonna move that boat until she does. Teddy feels guilty that Cristina is fishing instead of operating, and wants Webber to save a patient. Callie gets a phone call, one resident’s patient gets a fistula, so she’s out of the competition. Lexie gets into it with Eli over whether a patient’s drain should be put back in or not. Lexie of course wants it in because that’s the protocol for post-op fistula avoidance. Eli refuses because 12 years of experience tells him it’s too risky. Lexie gets Mark to go talk to Eli (she promises to have a drink with him if he does it), but despite Mark’s excellent strategy of giving Eli basketball tickets to pretend they talked, she still doesn’t get her drain put in. Lexie goes and gets Dr. Bailey, and STILL she doesn’t get the drain put back in because Eli apparently has already figured out the right post-op fistula avoidance protocol. Huh! Mere stalks out of the OR and calls Derek, telling him she’s sick of Cristina not talking to her. Derek pretends it’s not Meredith, and Cristina gets a fish! Meredith should stalk out of OR’s more often. It turns out that Mere stalked out of the OR because Owen questioned how she was going to sew a stitch or something, which she took to mean he is slapping her down because she questioned how he is handling Cristina. So they have a nice fight about that and hopefully put that argument to bed. I dunno. Miranda is over the moon over Eli’s extremely low fistula rate, and busts in on Webber’s board review of the dying patient for Teddy, which scores her no points with anyone but she doesn’t care. Cristina poses for a picture with her fish, and suddenly realizes she’s holding a giant dead fish in her harms so she starts sobbing. Cristina starts crying! Derek takes a picture to commemorate the situation. Finally the woman who squashed her husband gets to see him, although he’s unconscious. She holds his hand while Owen and Meredith get all teary-eyed at each other. Teddy couldn’t get the hospital to treat this dying patient she’s obsessed with, so she volunteers to marry him so he can have her health insurance. Ummm…isn’t that fraud? Eli asks Dr. Bailey out while she’s so happy about his fistula treatment and she says yes! I guess she couldn’t exactly let him do the oral gall bladder surgery, could she? Lexie shows up to have her drink with Mark and tries to pretend like it was a bad idea but he shuts her up by kissing her. Good move. Cristina comes home with 21 pounds of trout and puts her picture of herself crying on the fridge. We still don’t know if she’s going to ever get back to surgery though, that requires patience. Somebody knocks on Callie’s door, and guess what? It’s Arizona! She’s come back! Ooops…Callie shuts the door in her face. Good girl! How much longer do we have to watch Cristina mope around the hospital? I'm sick of everybody being so sad. When is the show gonna get back to "Old Grey's" where people were happy?? Okay. First of all, there was a shooting. Friends died, or were wounded. Cristina had a gun pressed to her head. And as far as "Old Grey's" is concerned … this show is dark. Always has been. Always will be. Just go back and watch Meredith drown, or George's dad die or Cristina cover for Burke's injury and have to turn him in to the Chief. Sure, there's gonna be humor to balance it, but Seattle is a cold, rainy place. And we writers figured, if we're gonna have a shooting, then we're d**n well gonna put our people through some honest to god post traumatic stress. So bear with us. Be patient. Take a breath and enjoy seeing the many new and interesting colors our talented cast is finding in their characters. (I mean, you gotta love Cristina giving that frat guy a lap dance at Joe's Bar) Here’s the thing about healing … it takes time. There’s no rushing it. Or planning for it. Or “getting out in front of it." I’ve had two major surgeries in the past five years. The first was a brain surgery. Scared the crap out of me – they cut through my skull and dug around in my brain. I woke up in the ICU … and didn’t really feel that bad. I went home two days later. In a week I was running around, back on the set, joking with the actors … if it wasn’t for the shaved head and the scars, you never would have known. Two years later, heart surgery. I was ready this time. I got myself into shape both physically and mentally. I had the top heart guy on the West Coast. Everything was in place for a speedy recovery. And this time I woke up in the ICU feeling like I’d been run over by a truck … that then backed up and ran over me again. There had been complications in surgery, and I didn’t really feel myself again for another year. Don’t be fooled by appearances. The bullet holes have been patched and painted over. The hospital has released a “sizzle reel” talking about how it has come back stronger than ever. But the scars of the shooting are still there. For some of our doctors the recovery has been relatively fast and painless. But for others … Cristina, Meredith, Derek … they’ve only just begun to deal. And because of what went down that day, because – however illogically – Cristina blames Meredith for her trauma, the two friends can’t lean on each other to help them through this crisis. So Cristina turns to Derek – a man familiar with darkness and doubts. He gets that Cristina needs to be given the space and time to find her way back from the brink. And because he owes this woman his life, and because she's his wife's "person," he shares the secret that has always given him comfort … fishing. And he's right. Cristina needs the quiet, needs to be in a place she can't escape from, needs the simple joy of catching a fish to finally allow the d**n to break and the grief to finally wash over her. And how about Mer and Owen?? Things have always been kinda strained between those two. The only thing they seem to have in common is Cristina, and now it's pretty clear that neither really trusts the other. You gotta feel sorry for Meredith. Left behind at the hospital, abandoned by her best friend and her husband (who now seem to be besties themselves), and dealing with Owen who doesn't seem to get how he's totally screwing up Cristina. What Mer doesn't seem to understand yet is that she's been traumatized too, but because she's Meredith, she's kept it hidden as she frantically tries to take care of each individual member of her little makeshift family. And Owen doesn't cut her any slack. That OR blow-up between them is one of my favorite scenes of this season. Our Dr. Bailey declared war on fistula. And won. And celebrated as only Dr. Bailey can. And picked up an admirer along the way. Bailey and Nurse Eli? Hmmm …. And Callie thought she'd really gained a new partner as she and Alex rocked that hip replacement. Only to have Alex return to Peds and the allure of Dr. Stark (played brilliantly by Ally McBeal and Numb3rs alum Peter MacNicol.) And then that knock on the apartment door and … a visitor from Malawi. No hug. No welcome home. Just a door slammed in your face. Something tells me there are rough seas ahead for Calzona. A final word about Cristina and Derek. Really Sandra and Patrick. We spent two days up on Big Bear Lake shooting the fishing scenes. Skeleton crew, led by Allison Liddi-Brown our Director, Herb Davis our gifted Director of Photography, and Jeff Rafner our resourceful UPM. We all had a blast. It was freezing cold, kinda rainy and incredibly beautiful. Rainbows criss-crossing the early morning sky. We don't get off our soundstages very often. Last time it was the Iraq episode, which Joan and I also wrote (I guess I like vacations). But Sandra and Patrick really loved working together, and the chance to be surrounded by nature just made it all the more special. Then there was the drinking and laughing and gossiping that happened in the hotel bar that night … but I guess what happens in Big Bear …. www.greyswriters.com

Ratings for Dec 2nd: Most of the broadcast primetime competition seemed to get little benefit from airing against CBS repeats. While ABC topped the adults 18-49 ratings, the general trend for originals was flat to down. ABC didn’t get any boost at all against CBS repeats, as Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town’s 2.3 adults 18-49 rating was down 12% from last years telecast. Grey’s Anatomy’s 4.0 adults 18-49 rating was down 7% vs. its last original episode (11/18), and Private Practice was flat vs. its last original episode’s (11/18) 2.9 adults 18-49 rating. Fox shows also didn’t get any CBS repeat cheer either as Bones fell 11% vs. its last original episode (11/18) to a 2.4 adults 18-49 rating, and Fringe slipped a tenth (5%) vs. 11/18 to a 1.8 adults 18-49 rating. NBC was up and down, but overall even vs. their last original episodes on 11/18. Community was flat with a 1.9 adults 18-49 rating, while 30 Rock was up 5% to a 2.3 rating. The Office slipped 3% to a 3.7 rating, and Outsourced fell 4% to a 2.5 rating. Against last week’s Thanksgiving episode, The Apprentice was up 56% to a still tiny 1.4 rating. tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2010/12/03/tv-ratings-thursday-greys-anatomy-office-outsourced-bones-fringe-fall-30-rock-apprentice-rise/74156

Brace yourself, Grey's Anatomy fans, as we have now officially entered the period known as The Dreaded Holiday Hiatus. Even in the best-case scenario, there will be no new episodes for five loooooong weeks. Fortunately, the show closed the first part of the season with a bang in "Adrift and at Peace" in which many characters were adrift but at peace? Not so much. Meredith/Derek/Cristina/OwenI love these four characters and the actors who portray them. I'm also going on-record right now with the opinion that a big reason season 7 has been so strong is because this quartet has been front and center in many configurations and this episode was no exception. Instead of MerDer and CO, we got Cristina/Derek and Meredith/Owen. No, not like that. Those of you who are freaking out about possible infidelity and such need to stop. This temporary partner swap is in no way romantic. It's about friendship and healing and support through good times and bad. Cristina Yang went fishing. That's a sentence I never thought I'd type, but she went fishing. Concerned about her being alone, Owen and Derek (love them) hatched a plan for Derek to take Cristina fishing to get away from it all. She approached it like she approaches every task before her: with research and precision and a quest for excellence. But by the end of the day Cristina Yang caught a fish and caught a break as, at long last, pent up anger and fear and constant whirling of her brain were released in a moment of cathartic euphoria and relief. To paraphrase Derek, always the best and truly something, Cristina is on her way back (although whether or not it's back to surgery is still in question), and we're left with an image of hope. In the meantime, things are very tense at the hospital as Meredith is working with Owen. They've never really taken tea and their mutual wariness is peaking because of an escalating conflict regarding Cristina: Meredith thinks Owen isn't doing enough while Owen thinks Meredith is doing too much. Things come to a head in one of the best scenes of the season to date. Owen calls Meredith both reckless and fearless, "... and I don't mean that in a good way," and confronts her about her disregard for her own life and her choices in the OR on the fateful day of the shooting. I have a strong suspicion that Meredith, contrary to Cristina's claim a few episodes back, is far from fine. Callie/Arizona/Mark/Lexie/Alex
Callie misses Arizona. So does Alex, but in an entirely different way. Mark misses Lexie. They are all ... wait for it ... adrift. And then things start happening. Alex briefly considers a professional alliance with Callie in orthopedics until he realizes that his heart belongs to pediatrics even if it means dealing with Dr. Stark. Mark (in a classic scene with Eli the Hot Male Nurse -- more on him later) plays his cards well and manages to go out with Lexie for a drink. Two drinks. Which leads to a kiss as Mexie fans rejoice. Then Arizona literally shows up on Callie's doorstep having given up Africa to come home to make amends. Which leads to the door being shut in Arizona's face as Calzona fans shout, "Noooooooooooo!" Ouch. Teddy/MirandaTeddy and Miranda both ended up with new men in their lives. Long story short, Teddy's going to marry a dying patient so he can get her health insurance. That would be the patient she's known for about six hours. Is this a Denny Duquette Redux? Is it an example of compassion or desperation or both? Is it insurance fraud? Whatever. I don't much care. Why is this character still around? At least Scott Foley is a cutie pie. In contrast, I care very much that our beloved Miranda Bailey, still reeling from the loss of Charles and Mary and adrift in a world of fistulas, not only made a medical breakthrough but may also be making a personal one as well. Seems the aforementioned Hot Nurse Eli is darned good at his job. He helps her solve her fistula mystery and all he asks in return is for her to go out with him! Hmmm ... that's a tough one, Miranda. Capable, handsome nurse who cares about his patients wants to go out with you, a doctor he not only respects but considers both smart and "cute." Good thing you said yes. Putting it Together
OK, kids, that's about it. There's a lot to ponder over the break, and I'll be around from time to time with pieces about topics we don't often have the time or word count to discuss in detail. Blessings and best wishes to you all in this holiday season. Grey's Anatomy returns in January 2011 on ABC. www.buddytv.com/articles/greys-anatomy/greys-anatomy-fan-columnist-at-38792.aspx?fmTw=1
