Nicholas Nickleby (2002)
Kevin McKidd ... as John Browdie
Young Nicholas and his family enjoy a comfortable life, until Nicholas' father dies and the family is left penniless. Nicholas, his sister and mother venture to London to seek help from their Uncle Ralph, but Ralph's only intentions are to separate the family and exploit them. Nicholas is sent to a school run by the cruel, abusive and horridly entertaining Wackford Squeers. Eventually, Nicholas runs away with schoolmate Smike, and the two set off to reunite the Nickleby family. Written by Anonymous
After the death of his financially replete father, Nicholas Nickleby and his family travel to London to seek assistance from his father's older brother Ralph. Taking an immediate dislike to his nephew, Ralph employs Nicholas under the sadistic Mr. Squeers and his interminable wife, owners of a boys' school in northern England. In the meantime, Ralph seeks to use Nicholas' beautiful sister Kate as a ploy to influence his investors. Discourse forces Nicholas to flee the school with the crippled Smike, an orphan with no memories of his former life before he was brought to Dotheboys' Hall. On their journey back to London they meet up with Vincent Crummles and his acting troupe, befriend Ralph's good-hearted secretary Newman Noggs, and ultimately rise over adversity. Written by Charity

QUOTES
John Browdie: I stuck up for thee. He said thee weren't fit to live with pigs. I said thee were.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John Browdie: Wait. I say Wait. I've come from the schoolhouse. Mr Squeers says he was attacked. Beaten, and nearly sensless. When he said it was thee who did it, I knew thee must nor be allowed to leave...
Nicholas: We will not be stopped.
John Browdie: ...without my shaking your hand and saying to thee, "Job well done". Give us thee hand, will you?
----
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John Browdie: [of the kidnapped Smike] He's in the schoolmaster's room, next to Tilda's and my room.
Nicholas: What is the way in?
John Browdie: You must go through the inn, but the schoolmaster is sitting in the front room just by the stairs.
Newman Noggs: Oh dear. It's impossible.
John Browdie: I could distract the schoolmaster, you could slip past and go to my room, there is a door adjoining the schoolmaster's, go through it, get the lad. I'll watch the stairs and again try to disrtact him when you come out.
Newman Noggs: If I could offer an opinion in regards to this scheme? It seems, uh, foolhardy, riddled with danger, and doomed to failure. Otherwise I can find no fault with it. It is for Smike.
