First Review credit : seat42f.com I was disillusioned by Grey’s Anatomy last season. What once had been the great Thursday night show that we set our clocks to had become a mockery of itself with ridiculous storylines (Izzie saves a deer is just the tip of the iceberg) and whiny lead characters that could drive a person insane. When the show came back from the strike last season, it felt more focused, more fact-paced, exciting.
Going into tonight’s 2 hour season premiere, I had good expectations. After seeing what Shonda and crew could do after a much needed creative break last year, I thought for sure that Season 5 was going to blow us all away. And it has, sort of.
There are many great things about the episode. Christina Yang is back, and better than ever. I didn’t like her as a quiet, wayward soul who was wounded because her precious Preston left and the horrid Erica took over. Seeing her struggle in this first 2 hours is brilliant and proves why Sandra Oh is nominated for things again and again. Gone is whiny Izzie Stevens from seasons past. She’s starting to sort of have a back bone and the whole Izzie / Alex thing is done well. The Callie/Erica “did we really go there” reaction is quite subtle, and I love Mark Sloane in general (I’m sensing an interesting thing between him and another doc, and I don’t know if it’s on purpose or just Eric Dane exuding sexiness, so I’ll keep that to myself for now. See if you can pick up on it). I thought George fit nicely into the episode – he was more of a conversation piece than an actual member of the storyline. And Bailey continues to be the coolest person on TV. Also amazing? Richard lays the smackdown on the hospital at the end of the episode and it’s so good.
The guest cast that they’ve lined up is ridiculous. Kathy Baker, Bernadette Peters, and Mariette Hartley play three best friends who are injured in a car accident. These three women are so good; they moved me to no end. Also amazing? Kevin McKidd who so belongs on TV all the time. The former Journeyman stops by long enough to save a few lives and impact one of our doctors’ lives in a big way. Please, please, please tell me we’ll see him again and often because the idea of Seattle Grace without Owen Hunt is a sad future.
The only thing I didn’t like about this episode (aside from a few scenes thrown in there to flat out shock us for shock value’s sake) is anyone whose last name appears in the title. Meredith Grey continues to be a whiny, annoying shell of a person and I hope that they give her more to do than complain all day. Meredith happy is no different than Meredith dark and twisty, and she needs to snap out of it. Lexie Grey is a pain in the ass, but I think there’s time for the show to redeem her. I don’t know if the same can be said for Mere.
Overall, I think we’re back to Seattle Grace of the olden days (is it really the olden days if it’s only 5 years ago). Tune in and tell us what you think

uh....wow Around min 42 of the second hour I thought my jaw was going to drop off of my skull. Did not see THAT coming. FTR, Kevin could look at me the way he does Christina in the scene about mistakes and tell me the sky was olive green and I would believe every syllable. This isn't Dan Vasser folks. Owen Hunt is the Alpha Male. I love how he took charge and took no nonsense from Derek. He does not make apologies and sees the world through an entirely different set of eyes vs any of the doctors at Seattle Grace. Can't wait to see how he comes back and takes the Chief up on his offer.
I think he and Sandra make a great match onscreen. There is definitely some chemistry there. Dansel in distress anyone? I am new to the show but from what I've seen of Christina in the last few eps of s4 she seems to be quite the cynic about life and very blunt. I actually cheered when she told Meredith to shut up about Derek. I think Owen will make an interesting counterpoint. He seems alot like her but for very different reasons. Oh and there is some baggage there. You can't make mistakes without carrying scars. If the writing on this series is worth a wit then Owen's experiences in Iraq will come back to haunt him.
Nothing more coherent to add at this point.

wow, great response ruralstar! I also was surprised a bit, but thought it worked so well--that great romantic moment--and I liked that she pulled away as well. It's interesting that we get to know he will come back, but not how or why. Being given a job with the hospital seemed a bit farfetched at first, but considering things seem to be quickly unraveling at the hospital....I don't think Kevin would have worked half as well paired with anyone other than Sandra Oh. She's feisty, blunt, uncompromising, real. I agree with you that they are good counterpoints to each other--much alike in their characters so far, which could make it more explosive. And with Meredith in her own little world, she needs someone to turn to now.
I was impressed and liked the positive vibe. I will be more thrilled when he has even more lines beyond "so" and more backstory, too. But that final scene with Sandra, that made my night. I think he'll be winning over tons more fans pretty fast at this rate.

I think he'll be winning over tons more fans pretty fast at this rate. Well I wasn't sure if I was talking out of my hat regarding the Christina character. I am new after all. But I agree that no other woman on that show would work opposite Owen. I mean can you see him as a match for Meredith vs Derek? Uh, no, he would slap her silly after two minutes. Guys like that have no tolerance for whining. I suppose if Erica Hahn wasn't wrestling with her sexual identity she might have been an interesting match. *shrugs* In the Stargate fandom we used to say that "What" was RDA's word. As Jack O'Neill he could say that word a dozen different ways for every situation. I kept thinking that "So" was KMK's word as Owen. So he did a pen trach, so his leg is bleeding, so Christina made a mistake, so she doesn't know him. That kiss shocked the H*** out of me and made the evening. I'm looking forward to more backstory for Owen as well. Regarding Owen being offered a job.... Well, we don't know when his tour is up and where he wants to be afterwards so it didn't strike me as far fetched. Maybe he'll stop by and check Christina's wound-and her tonsils-before going back overseas Oh and wasn't that just an amazing icicle? Did they freeze that puppy in place??? *snorts*

The third season-premiere of ABC’s Ugly Betty finished second in the 8 p.m. hour, with a 6.7/11 in the overnights. Comparably, that was down by 18 percent from it’s year-ago season-opener (8.2/13 on Sept. 27, 2007). Ugly Betty led into the two-hour season-premiere of Grey’s Anatomy, which won the 9-11 p.m. block with an 11.0/17 in the overnights -- the highest rated show of the evening. As good as that still it, Grey’s was down by 13 percent from the 12.6/19 it opened in the overnights with one year earlier. And that was opposite an original installment of CSI. Here is the half-hour breakdown: Grey’s Anatomy (ABC) 9:00 p.m. 10.8/16 (#1) 9:30 p.m. 11.1/17 (#1) 10:00 p.m. 11.0/17 (#1) 10:30 p.m. 11.0/17 (#1) www.mediaweek.com/mw/content_display/community/programming-insider/newsletters/e3i6d1955ff988810b8798daf1fe1c38132

NO SPOILERS!!
I think the accent he used was a good choice, I expected he'd use the same one as he had with Dan Vassar. I love this character! I am also thrilled to see those clips up on youtube, that's great that people who don't live in North America will get a chance to see it.

SO!!!! Oh wow I just managed to watch online (hence the screen caps) You guys have just about said everything....but I love the character, very Knight in shinning Armour 'ish. Best part was when he came out to pick CY up off the pavement thought that was very well done (upside down head shot)...and not really to Vorenus like Owen is much more human...That Kiss was quite unexpected I look forward to the next episode that he is in.

I swear "So" is going to become my new favorite word. Agreed about Owen's dissimilarity to Lucius. Very glad of that. Though both are Alpha Male to the extreme.

Here you go Ruralstar best quote from Grey's Eps 5.01/2 Richard: With a pen!? You trach'd this guy with an ink pen? Owen: So? Cristina: Pen? Trach? Hot!

Cristina: That's my icicle. Owen: Yeah. Cristina: Uh, you took out my icicle. I didn't give you permission to do that. Owen: So? This was such a great metaphor for Cris's heart melting because of Owen.

Good point Noody131! In light of what we now know of Cristina's past, I thought it was interesting that Cristina was the one holding the limo driver's chest closed to lessen bleeding.
