I almost cried when I read this! Kevin McKidd Joins the Cast of Grey’s Anatomy The revolving door to Seattle Grace Hospital’s ER sent Brooke Smith on her way last week, but this week the Grey’s Anatomy cast has happier news to announce: Kevin McKidd is joining the show as a series regular, ABC reveals to PEOPLE exclusively. The Scottish actor, 35, who starred in Made of Honor with Patrick Dempsey earlier this year, is thrilled to have the new gig after his starring role on NBC’s Journeyman came to an end after 13 episodes this year. “It’s a great show, and I’m lucky to be on it,” he tells PEOPLE. His character, Dr. Owen Hunt, is a veteran from the war in Iraq and a love interest for Dr. Cristina Yang. McKidd, who lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Jane, and children Joseph, 8, and Iona, 6, says he is happy to be working with Dempsey again, though their previous screen pairing was mere coincidence. “I got a knock on my door [from Patrick],” he says of his first day on set. “I said, ‘did you have anything to do with this?’ He said, ‘no, they don’t tell us anything.” –Lisa Ingrassia tvwatch.people.com/2008/11/11/kevin-mckidd-joins-the-cast-of-greys-anatomy/

And another: McMajor is permanently admitted to Grey's Anatomy Hahn is out and Hunt is in! An ABC representative confirmed to People that Scottish actor Kevin McKidd, who recently starred in the canceled-too-soon Journeyman, has been upped to series regular on Grey's Anatomy. When it was announced that McKidd was in talks to appear on Grey's Anatomy this fall as Major Owen Hunt, a military doctor, it was also mentioned that the stint was to be a recurring one that could be upped to a regular one if the audience responded well to the character. Looks like the audience will get more screen time for McMajor! McKidd appeared in four episodes of Grey's so far this season and is set to appear in this week's episode as well. Since the show is currently producing episodes 13 and 14, it's possible that we won't really witness on screen McKidd's regular status until mid-season, meaning that there may be a few McMajor-less episodes until then. I don't know about you, but I welcome the news of McKidd becoming a series regular. I've enjoyed McKidd's acting skills during his short stint on Journeyman and have been entertained by his character's unusual ways to do medicine on Grey's www.tvsquad.com/2008/11/11/mcmajor-is-permanently-admitted-to-greys-anatomy/

Happy, Happy Joy, Joy!!! I have renewed faith in the people at GA. I'm so glad he has a regular gig that will last but that he doesn't have to carry single-handedly. I hope this leads to great things for Kevin in the States.

Question: I'm dying for Christina and Owen to get together on Grey's. -- Katie Ausiello: Well, this is certainly a positive step in that direction: Kevin McKidd has been promoted to a series regular.

Grey's Anatomy Hires Awesome Doctor! It's been a rough couple of weeks for Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes. She had to fire actress Brooke Smith, setting off a hailstorm of criticism stemming from the fact that the actress was part of the show's first lesbian relationship with fellow actress Sara Ramirez. And while we still tend to believe Ms. Rhimes' original assertion, that Ms. Smith was shitcanned because her character wasn't working, the stigma that she was let go for playing a lesbian (and grossing out too many ABC executives) remains. Put it this way: when even Isaiah Washington, who was infamously fired after using a gay slur to describe co-star T.R. Knight, comes out and blasts the handling of the situation, you know you're in trouble. (To Mr. Washington's credit, he never blamed Ms. Rhimes, only the people who put her in such an awkward position.) Well, Ms. Rhimes finally has some good news to report. Actor Kevin McKidd, who has appeared in four Grey's episodes thus far season and will show up again tomorrow night, has been added to the cast as a series regular. Woo hoo! We think this is great news for multiple reasons, not the least of which is that Mr. McKidd happens to be one of the only genuinely likeable characters left on Grey's. Whenever his former military doctor comes on screen we actually enjoy the show, which is a stark contrast to the loathing and anger we feel towards it when so many other characters appear (Sandra Oh, we're looking at you!). However what we're most happy for is Mr. McKidd's return to series television. We were part of the select few who actually watched Journeyman last year, and while we can't say that show was very good--a half-baked rehash of Quantum Leap and The Twilight Zone--Mr. McKidd was a breakout star-in-waiting and consistently excellent in his time traveling role. The Scottish actor has an everyman charm that should help lead him towards a great career . Hopefully his stint on Grey's Anatomy doesn't ruin his good nature, or more importantly, our opinion of him (since it's all about us, obviously). Meanwhile, from a show standpoint, with Mr. McKidd arriving full-time and Ms. Smith departing, Grey's has already moved up an entire notch on the likeability scale. It's now at notch one. www.observer.com/2008/o2/i-greys-anatomy-i-hires-awesome-doctor

Nice review but a couple of things stick out.
Cristina is meant to be Owen's love interest. The reviewer had better lighten up because more Sandra Oh is on offer. Personally I like the Cristina character. She is ten times more interesting to me than Mer or Der for example.
Second point is that the reviewer is putting alot of pressure on Kevin and his character to make GA more appealing. Not to say Kevin can't do this-I know i'm preaching to the choir here-but it's still alot to ask.

I love the show but I don't like Meredith & Derek, I think they are so boring since season 4.. But I understand MerDer's fans 'cause they are the couple star of this show, and nothing happens between these both. I just love Cristina character and her story line. Before she had Dr Burke but he left at the end the season 3. In the season 4, Sandra Oh had no good story line because her co-star Isaiah had been fired.. Now there's Kevin and they have great chemistry !! So Sandra deserves an amazing co-star..Kevin =) =) And Kevin deserves all the good things !
I hope you understood me LOL

There is definitely alot of history in the Mer/Der relationship and I can understand sticking with characters long term. I just don't find them half as interesting as characters like Cristina and Owen. Can't wait to see Thursday's episode!

Kevin McKidd transplanted to 'Grey's Anatomy' BY CRISTINA KINON DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Thursday, November 13th 2008, 4:00 AM Kevin McKidd (r.) as Owen Hunt, an Iraq war veteran and the hospital's head of trauma. RON TOM/ABC Kevin McKidd (r.) as Owen Hunt, an Iraq war veteran and the hospital's head of trauma. Coming off the disappointing cancellation of NBC's "Journeyman" after one season and HBO's "Rome" after only two, Kevin McKidd has been added as a series regular to one of TV's top dramas, ABC's "Grey's Anatomy." "I am excited to have Kevin McKidd joining us for the season," "Grey's" creator Shonda Rhimes said Wednesday. "He's been a delight to collaborate with and brings incredible passion, talent and creativity to his work. Plus, he's already got the 'Mc' built in to his name so we had to keep him." McKidd, who started off the season as a guest star, will continue on as Maj. Owen Hunt, an Army surgeon who recently returned from Iraq, the lone survivor of his unit. As the new head of trauma at Seattle Grace, his on-the-fly method of medicine clashes with the hospital's by-the-book style. "He's pretty uncompromising but also willing to learn," said McKidd. "There are a lot of contradictions in his character, but that's what makes him interesting to play." McKidd said that he was disappointed when "Journeyman" wasn't renewed after the writers strike, but that becoming part of "Grey's" big ensemble cast has been a welcome respite from the breakneck pace of being the star of a show. To prepare for the role of Hunt, McKidd met with an Iraq veteran who works with others who suffer from post-traumatic stress, and has picked up several books and biographies on the subject. "This is an ongoing war and it's only right that I don't do some generalized approximation of the character," McKidd said. "Whether the reading comes into the scenes or not, its important that I read these testaments about what's out there." As for Owen's relationship with Sandra Oh's character, Dr. Cristina Yang, McKidd promises there's much more in store for the pair, though things will likely get "complicated." McKidd's addition to the cast comes on the heels of Brooke Smith's sudden departure after last week's episode and while McKidd is "honored" and "flattered" with his new position, he does wish his character would have had the chance to clash with Smith's Dr. Erica Hahn. "I just started the show when she [was let go] so I was very much out of the loop but I felt sad because she's obviously a great actress and I felt Owen and her character could have really clashed in an interesting way," said McKidd. "I'm sad that that opportunity couldn't come." www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/tv/2008/11/13/2008-11-13_kevin_mckidd_transplanted_to_greys_anato.html

Owen's internal pain feels very real onscreen. I'm not at all surprised that Kevin took the steps of speaking to veterans and reading books. It shows in his fine work.
I agree with him regarding the Hahn character as well. She would not have been at all intimidated by Owen nor would she have had the entrenched arrogance of Derek and Mark. Missed opportunity IMO.

The official press release KEVIN McKIDD JOINS THE CAST OF ABC'S "GREY'S ANATOMY" Actor Kevin McKidd ("Rome," "Journeyman") has joined the cast of ABC's popular drama "Grey's Anatomy." McKidd first appeared as Major Owen Hunt in this season's premiere episode of "Grey's Anatomy," titled "Dream a Little Dream of Me." Hunt has joined the staff of Seattle Grace Hospital as the head of trauma surgery, after serving as a top military field surgeon in Iraq.
An established star of film, television and theatre, the Scottish actor has made a name for himself playing such varied roles as a doomed drug addict in "Trainspotting," a brooding Caesar-era soldier in HBO's "Rome" and a time-traveling journalist in last year's NBC drama, "Journeyman." McKidd recently co-starred alongside his "Grey's Anatomy" co-star, Patrick Dempsey, and Michelle Monaghan in the 2008 film romantic comedy, "Made of Honor."
McKidd has wrapped production on "Bunraku," starring alongside Josh Harnett, Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson and Ron Perlman. In the drama he plays a virulent criminal who terrorizes a town. Other film credits include "Hannibal Rising," "Kingdom of Heaven," "De-Lovely" and "Sixteen Years of Alcohol," for which he was nominated for Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards.
Born and raised in Scotland, McKidd was a member of the Moray Youth Theatre. He became involved in the Bedlam Theatre Company while he was a student at the University of Edinburgh, and it was there that he decided to pursue acting full-time, landing his first leading role in the Wild Cat Theatre Company-produced stage play, "The Silver Darlings," for which he won the Gulliver Award.
McKidd currently resides in Los Angeles with his family.
"Grey's Anatomy" stars Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey, Patrick Dempsey as Derek Shepherd, Sandra Oh as Cristina Yang, Katherine Heigl as Isobel "Izzie" Stevens, Justin Chambers as Alex Karev, T.R. Knight as George O'Malley, Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey, James Pickens, Jr. as Richard Webber, Sara Ramirez as Callie Torres, Eric Dane as Mark Sloan, Chyler Leigh as Lexie Grey and Kevin McKidd as Owen Hunt.
"Grey's Anatomy" was created and is executive produced by Shonda Rhimes ("Introducing Dorothy Dandridge"). Betsy Beers ("Casanova"), Mark Gordon ("Saving Private Ryan"), Krista Vernoff ("Law & Order"), Rob Corn ("Chicago Hope"), Mark Wilding ("Jake: 2.0") and Allan Heinberg ("The O.C.") are executive producers. "Grey's Anatomy" is an ABC Studios production. One error its Rain Dog Theater company that did The silver darling

"Passion, talent, creativity"...Sounds like the people at GA indeed know what they have and will write accordingly. Applause to Kevin for taking the extra step to assimilate the nuances of the character to make it a true portrayal. Well done. I can hardly wait to see more!
