GA 5.10 "All By Myself"
Can't they just kill off Izzie already? That's my preferred theory, anyway: her visions of Denny are a brain tumor that's gonna pop and kill her. And then George will be all peeved because no one listened to him even though he's already started warning people. Sadly, Alex will get hurt (again), which he doesn't deserve, but he deserves someone better than Izzie, anyway.
Yeah, we're not fond of Izzie these days. She's neglecting her duties to the clinic which she founded (she hadn't been there all week), she's skipping off to go have imaginary sex at work, she's de facto cheating on Alex, who proclaimed his love for her in a really tragic scene last night - tragic because we know how this will end. It's just - be an adult. Which I know is asking too much since this is Izzie and all, but come on.
And her pitch to Cristina. Gah. Was there any way to read that as anything other than a child going, 'You won't pick me, but I'm having great sex and you're not, neener, neener, NEENER!'? 'Cause that's all I saw.
Izzie: Is this hard for you? Being banned from the solo surgery, it must be really hard for you.
Like, all I could think was, "b***h!" Can someone remind me why Izzie hates Cristina? I forget. Beyond, ya know, total opposite personalities.
Moving on to the more important part of the ep, which is the Cristina/Owen storyline of awesomesauce. Seriously. I love Owen Hunt and Kevin McKidd in so many ways. In case you didn't know this yet.
His "make it stop" to Alex, when the two girls were screaming at each other, just brilliantly understated and frustrated and bordering on '...or ELSE.' And then Alex does.
Then, when Cristina tells off her whole class, tells them that she should have gotten it and not any of them, and she storms off with tears in her eyes...he comes up to her and tells her "Not here." An awesome moment, that. He was telling her it was okay to lose it, just not there, right outside where anyone could walk by and see. And then he took her to the boiler room with the silly vent and yeah, it was cheesy, but it worked. We don't often get to see Cristina happy - especially if it's about something that's NOT blood and gore - so to see her light up was lovely.
Dixon rocks! She decides the dead 16-year-old will be a great organ donor on the OR table, right after she dies.
Dixon: She's only 16. That's good news. She'll be an excellent candidate for organ donation. Excellent candidate, excellent organs, young.
She's so clinical about it. Because yes, it's all technically true, but ya know, maybe not the best time and place? That's why I think she'll be a great addition to the cast - saying wildly inappropriate truths at inconvenient times. Plus MM is amazing.
Dixon: She has no thoughts, no emotions, no senses. I'm Dr. Dixon. I will be harvesting your sister's organs if your parents agree.
And what a way to get that agreement. She has no compunction about telling the girl her sister is as good as dead because she's focused on all the other girls whose sisters/brothers/mothers/fathers will get to live because of it. And then she realizes enough to know she's offended them, but doesn't back down from her stance.
Awe. Some.
Dixon: Dr. Yang - you tortured her today, making her choose among her peers, some kind of emotional torture. Was that your intention?
Chief: Yes.
Dixon: Have your board make me a better offer.
Awe. Some. Like so long as he was aware that he was torturing Cristina - was big enough to admit it, maybe? - she approved.
I was surprised by the Callie/Sadie flirtation, mostly because I thought the plans for that had been scrapped. On its own it really seems like they replaced the not-pretty girl with the pretty girl...and that sucks like whoa.
`
I wasn't at all surprised by the fact that Cristina picked Alex. Alex spoke her language. He stuck to just-the-facts, rather than getting messy and emotional about anything. Despite that he said he couldn't kiss her ass...he still tailored his pitch to exactly who Cristina is: the robot-surgeon who doesn't need her ass kissed. And, hell, that may even be a little bit of the influence of Hunt coming in there, Hunt who is so unfailingly critical of how these doctors let their personal lives get into everything and act like children because of it.
Finally, Bailey remains awesome like whoa.
Cristina: You won your solo surgery?
Bailey: I'm just gonna pretend you didn't feel the need to ask me that question, Yang, of course I won. I was good. I didn't cut L-VAD wires, put my hand in bomby body cavities, or have my interns operating on themselves. I was a special - heh. I was young, gifted, and black and everybody knew it: the Attendings knew it, the Chief knew it.
The sheer confidence...and then she gets all jazzed about Mark building his patient some new vocal chords, excited like she hasn't been in a while, especially since she's been telling Callie how bored she is. Love her.
Good ep, lovely Hunt moments, Izzie can die. That is all.
