ooops sorry I thought I had unlocked the thread thanks kaz for the heads up
Message from Kaz....according to someone over at TWoP who seemed to be in the know, ABC have pulled the original episode of Ugly Betty (I think) that was supposed to air before GA and are showing reruns of Scrubs so GA will start at the normal time (and apparently have a 15 min jump start on CSI).

Excellent episode.
I guess I'll start with Bailey. As a new fan, I feel I've missed something with the Jackson storyline. Kudos to Chandra for bringing a newbie like me up to speed with her emotional performance. I love Bailey's loyalty and fierceness. She is the kind of doctor we would all want if we were in Jackson's shoes. I thought the pissing match between her and Arizona Robbins was appropriate if a bit soon in their working relationship. Bailey's horror and resignation during and following the failed transplant really struck a nerve with me. I can see why Sadie was thrown in as a sort of sounding board. She didn't really resonate however. Further proof that the character just isn't needed on the series.
The short guy....Yeah, he's got that whole big man in a little man's body thing going on. The brother was right, he was being an ass. Nothing attractive about his attitude so why would anyone date him? The case did give Callie the chance to reflect on where she is going in life however. I'm glad Mark told her to just take a chance. That's all she can do.
Mark and Lexie...*snorts* "The one with the juice box." That was a riot. Still, momma Shepherd had it right. Mark doesn't mean any harm. He needs young and sweet to balance out teenage boy syndrome. You never know, he just might learn something from Lexie. Honestly though, that last bit between Mark and Callie in the elevator made me wish a bit that they would actually take their relationship more seriously. Though shacking up would undoubtedly ruin what they have now.
William Dunn playing on Meredith's emotions throughout the episode was pretty chilliing. Eric Stoltz has creepy down to an art. I did like Derek finally losing his cool and then tagging Cristina to scrub into the surgery. As Derek's mother says, he sees things in black and white. Letting Dunn live is wrong, so is letting him die in a far more humane manner than his victims did. The last scene where Dunn beats his head against the back of the bed made me cringe.
Tyne Daly was excellently cast as Momma Shepherd. I love how she was so intuitive. Like her son but tempered with tenderness she carefully manages. Each conversation she had with various characters was a bit of a shock but so accurate. She served as a good way to get exposition into the story as well. Digging the truth out of Mark, making Lexie be honest, getting Derek to admit his feelings about his father and knowing exactly how screwed up Owen actually is without saying much at all.
Cristina and Meredith. I guess that rift is starting to mend. The ponytail comment showing that she cared.
Izzy and Denny...yeah, whatever.
Arizona's converation with Alex on the plane. Yep, liked that. Arizona is alot like Owen in some ways. She handles her emotions differently but she's got ghosts. She's honest and she cares about the medicine.
Okay so to Owen. Not much screen time for Kevin but so much happens in those short minutes. The date question...OMG, LMAO. Slipped into the discussion with barely a blink leaving Cristina with that WTH just happened look on her face. It would figure that Izzy would tell her to ask something stupid but I love how we got back around to that question. Then Derek's mother. "I bet you have stories to tell." Owen, "None worth repeating." (paraphrased) Not the dialogue so much as the look on Kevin's face as he walks away. Just a brief glimpse to prove that her comment, not nearly as offhand as it sounded, has touched a nerve. My jaw fell open when she later asked Owen if he had been sleeping. He started to unravel right there. Go for the Glenfiddich Owen. I had to retrieve my jaw a second time when Cristina opened the door and he was standing there in the suit with the flowers. You just knew he was drunk even before he lurched into the living room. The last bit in the shower.... I don't have any words, appearances to the contrary, to describe that bit. Extraordinary stuff from Kevin and Sandra Oh. There's not a woman watching who didn't want to take that pain away.
Last week's episode was disappointing. This week's blew me away. Can't wait to see it again.

I agree this was an amazing episode all around, Owen's part was a given but I felt the WHOLE show came back tonight. Here are my thoughts: Well I first have to say that as a long time fan I am really enjoying Arizona Robbins. She is just herself, she's not being a condascending person as in the case of Hahn, to Bailey, rather it is Bailey that is having a hard time giving her a chance. I find her very like able and I love her whole outlook on life in general. She had me at 'rainbows and crap'. I think she will be a good match for Callie. She's sweet, and sort of bubbly, but she's not to the point where it bugs you. She's just right. Though assuming we alll have our demons, I guess its a safe bet that she will have a dark side. Regardless, she had me at 'rainbows and crap'. I loved the whole notion of Cristina and Mer wanting to be there for each other but not ready to be. You could tell it was killing them not having their friendship, but at the same time Cristina was there for Meredith in a wierd way. Her telling Mer that the ponytail is ridiculous is such a Cristina thing. Its exactly what she would say even if they were speaking. Izzie is no substitute for Cristina nor is Izzie a substitute for Mer, but I think you can see how she kind of gets in the middle, or puts herself in the middle. She reminds of that girl in highschool who was just so annoying because she made everything sound so easy but is really messed up herself. I mean she's breaking up with already dead Denny, to be with warm, alive, Alex, even though Alex is kind of stupid for not thinking that there is something wrong with Izzie, why is george the only one that sees it? I really loved Mark/Lexie/ Callie in this ep. You can tell he really does care for Lexie, I think that Ma Shepard's assesment that he's a 15 yr old boy brain is right on It kind of reminds of how when you go home and you revert back to your childhood roles with your brothers and sisters. Mark was the little boy that Derek's mom took in again, and Meredith is pretending to be the perky girlfriend taht she's not. I love the fact that she told Mark he didn't need permission to date Lexie, too often enough we let our loyalties get in the way of happiness and his speech to Callie in the elevator about standing tall was just brilliant. Poor Callie too I didn't realize how broken she has been. I can totally see where she is coming from, but on the other side you have to keep trying if you want anything to work. I liked the development of Derek and tying it into the serial killer. It was a great combination and i think we've waited too long for that. This is partly why its so frustrating that Meredith is so conflicted about the killer. Eric Stoltz is awesome though. I would not want to meet him in a dark alley, even though I could probably take him. Tyne Daly was just amazing as Derek's mom and I love how she reads people. She's a pro and the fact that she could read Owen so quickly was just awesome. I think it obvioiusly triggered his PSTD attack, but at the same time I think the fact she recognized he wasn't sleeping, etc. explained so much. That he hasn't really dealt with anything yet even though he's trying to move forward. Owen was just completely heartbreaking in this episode. I have to say that Kevin was fantastic and so moving. You'd never guess from the confidence he had in asking Cristina out in the beginning that he'd end up with his clothes on in her shower all. Like ruralstar said you just knew he wasn't himself and that he was drunk. It was so sad when he was saying he'd make it up to her and that she did't deserve this. The thing about Cristina you guys should know is that, like Owen, she doesn't like to get into issues, but at the same time she feels like crap because of what happened with Burke and doesnt' trust people. He was just so emotional and when he jumped in her shower I was like Oh no he didn't! BUt then you could tell that she could see all the pain he was going through and trying to just conceptualize it all. When he was talking about his best surgery about the mangled guy whose life he saved by laying on the dude's body for hours so he wouldn't bleed out and sent him a letter thanking him and then killed himself in the end, you could tell in both their faces that whatever connection they have, whether its love or whatever, it is going to run deep. Even though there was no love scenes, no sex, no kisses, etc. I just like how this is going and I feel that Sandra and Kevin are such great performers they say so much with just their expressions alone. If they both don't get an emmy nomination for their performances there is really something wrong with the world

Wow! Amazing episode. It was so interesting that I didn't mind when Kevin wasn't on screen. That's new for me. Love Tyne Daly! Such an amazing performance from Kevin per usual. It wasn't your typical shower scene, nor how I thought the scene would go, yet it was so well done.

right just seen it I have to say Kevin/ Owen is clocking in about 3 mins an episode I do hope that improves after the 13th when he becomes a regular... the overall show was excellent I enjoyed each story within the episode. Of course by the time I got to watch it I was just waiting in anticipation for the shower scene and man I was blown right out the water it was awesome....yes Emmy material for sure. Although did anyone else feel that Kevin looks like he is loosing weight...perhaps thats a part of the character but he was look a bit thin there in the shower.

Hi guys
I finnnnally got to watch the episode. I had the day from hell yesterday and didn't get home until close to 10pm (on a Friday night!). I had the episode downloaded and all ready to go but I pretty much just had dinner, spent a tiny bit of time with my husband (not even half an hour chatting about my day and his) and then crashed out.
But the suspense was killing me so I woke early and watched the episode this morning.
I am just about to go out again and don't have time to write a proper review but I loved it. All of it. The whole episode was so, so good. Classic Grey's.
But the Owen and Cristina stuff...just WOW. Maya, you were so right that I would love it. I did and I have stuff to say but I will save my review for when I have more time.

Leanne, I've noticed for a while now that Kevin looks thin. Particularly in some of the party pictures from November. I do wonder if standing three hours in a shower didn't raise havoc with anyone's system too. *shrugs*
Kaz, looking forward to your thoughts. It was an excellent episode.

Kaz, looking forward to your thoughts. It was an excellent episode. Yeah one wonders because I always had in my mind that actors might look uncomfortable in a shoot ie wading in water or whatever but there was a crew standing by to sort them out the moment they get out the water.....well the truth is it can be a really yucky scene and yes when they are finished crew runs out but he would be wet under a blanket until the next shoot at intervals of like 5/10min of standing around getting cold....not great

Okay, I've finally had a chance to sit down and complete my thoughts about this episode. I loved everything about it. Even the Izzie/Denny stuff didn't annoy me.
Firstly, let me start with that "alarmingly high ponytail" and the visit from Derek's mum.
Meredith freaking out surrounded by all the others (minus Cristina) was some good old school Grey's Anatomy.
I found it hilarious that in the absence of Cristina, Izzie took over to give Meredith tips as to how to impress the mama. The ponytail cracked me up from the moment I saw it (as did everyone's reaction to it), not to mention the creepy Meredith smile (at Izzie's suggestion) and the looking like she was going to pee. All of it was fantastic.
Mark and Lexie - firstly, who could concentrate on the words coming out of Mark's mouth in that first scene when he was all shirtless...?! Anyway, hot bodies aside, the whole section from where Lexie goes to sit with Mark and the other interns join them to where he guiltily goes to confess to Mrs Shepherd was so comical and wonderful. I'm usually a bit neutral about Mark. I don't love him but I don't hate him. But the line where he said that he didn't press start on the microwave when Derek's frog was in there was just pure win. He seemed like such a little boy again when talking to Derek's mum.
Tyne Daly was a-maaaa-zing. But I will get to her a little later.
Eric Stoltz continues to creep me out but at the same time make me feel like Meredith a little. d**n him for being so good and making me sympathise with a serial killer.
I found Arizona annoying last week but this episode I really got her. I think she really sold the "tiny coffins" scene in the plane and I wouldn't be disappointed if she stayed on a little longer.
Chandra Wilson is doing some amazing work. It's a different side of Bailey that we're seeing and will continue to see (from the look of the sneak peek) but I love it. Consistent with the ongoing theme of struggle, she's really struggling to find her niche as a surgeon and she is completely selling it.
Now to Tyne Daly. What an actress. If I didn't know better, I would have thought that her and Patrick Dempsey ARE actually mother and son. The bond was so believable. And McDreamy actually got to act again. I was a big PD fan when GA first started but over the seasons, he seemed to get less and less decent material to work with and he just sort of faded into the background. This week, he knocked it out of the park. I especially liked the scene where he was sitting with Tyne outside of the hospital and they were having that exchange about Derek's anger over his father's death. The pain and grief in that scene was so understated but so powerful.
I was also pleased by the way Carolyn Shepherd just seemed to have everyone's number in this episode. She totally saw who Meredith and Lexie were, in a matter of minutes, and completely nailed Owen in their last scene together. In fact, shower scene aside, that was one of my favourite moments of the episode. I think it's because Tyne and Kevin are both so good and the combination of them together was electric. You could see Owen starting to crack from the moment he whirled around to say "I'm sorry?" right until he gave that little glance back when getting into the lift and from there on, I knew we would be in trouble.
...which brings me to "The Date".
Firstly (and just quickly), I loved the scene where he asked her out. He was so matter of fact yet nervous at the same time and she was just at a loss for words, even when he finishes it all off with telling her the patient needed an aenema because he'd been "holding onto it for days". Pure comedy.
As for the date itself, I'd had a couple of weeks to mull this over, to try and figure out how Owen could plausibly end up in the shower. I'd figured Mama Shepherd would trigger some PTSD episode but WHAT that would be is where I got stumped. Everything I thought of just seemed too unrealistic. Never in my imaginings did I think they would have Owen show up drunk. I just didn't think they would go there (and if you listen to the podcast, it seems like this was a bone of contention even in the writers' room). In all his drunkenness though, Owen still had the wherewithall to throw a suit on, bring flowers and SHOW up so that Cristina wouldn't think he'd stood her up. Owen really does care.
I don't need to reiterate how wonderful Kevin and Sandra were in their scenes together, because I seem to say it every week. The shower scene really did leave me teary and struggling to find air though. The change in Owen's face from the start of that speech about his best surgery to the end, where he reveals that the guy shot himself, was subtle but brilliant. As was the transformation of Cristina's from anger and annoyance to pure compassion. I thought it was brilliant that they had Owen give that speech in the shower, a place where you are usually completely naked because despite the clothing, he completely exposes himself to Cristina (and I think that's where some of the awkwardness might come from in the next episode - where do they go from here?)
I would have liked to have seen more but I am relatively certain from the promo shots for next week that what happened after is that Cristina undressed Owen, put him into her bed and he spent the night.
I am so pleased with where this story is heading. I know everything is still up in the air but I think we'll get the happy ending that was alluded to in the season premiere. I said this over at TWoP but I will reiterate here. To me, everything that happened in the SP was one big symbolic foreshadowing of how it has played out so far and will continue to:
- Owen pulls the icicle from Cristina's chest (symbolically he melts the Ice Maiden's heart and we see a softer/warmer side of Cristina - check) - Owen is injured and tries to patch himself up (Owen has PTSD and is trying to just cope with it on his own - check) - Owen asks Cristina to help him out with the patching up because he can't do it alone (I think the showing up drunk and revealing how broken he is in that shower scene is step one of reaching out) - Owen stitches Cristina up (I think it's happening as we speak. He's been there for her over the last few episodes and by her having to take care of him, she's healing too).
Sorry if that was too long. I warned you that I had alot to say!

I listened to Shonda's podcast, I think Betsey Beers mentioned that Kevin was in the shower for about 6 hours? I dont know the other writer said 3. But I imagine they had to do several takes of Kevin's scene and Sandra's reaction because of how the shot was composed. Someone posted on the ABC board a link to a blog where they saw the episode before it aired, they said that Cristina gets in the shower and kisses Owen, so I'm guessing the kissing must have been deleted. I have to say that was a good move because I think the whole intensity of the scene would have lost its meaning a little. Not that it wouldn't have been nice to see kisses, but I would have felt the same if they had pity sex, it wouldn't have meant as much with how their story is progressing. I agree with so much of what you said Kaz, well pretty much ALL of it LOL Somethings I've been picking up on as well themes, foreshadowings and such: 1. Owen calls Cristina "Yang" while she calls him Owen mostly-She only referred to Preston as Burke 2. Owen seems to get jittery whenever put on the spot or asked a direct question about himself, when it doesn't have to do with work. When he asked Cristina out on the date he got a bit nervous after she said "I'm Sorry??" and also with how he reacted to Derek's mom. Cristina used to be that way, for different reasons than Owen obviously, but now she's the one taking inititive, asking questions and being forthcoming. 3. It took Burke forever to find out where Cristina lives Burke and Cristina had been sleeping together for months, yet she had no problem telling Owen where she lived . 4. In the season premiere Owen carried Cristina over the threshold at SGH when he discovered her impaled by the icicle--foreshadowing? 5. Also in the season premiere the two women who get in the argument over an affair with the otehr's husband I think is also foreshadowing. Remember Meredith told Cristina "Then I'll start sleeping with your husband". I think this will come full circle in one point or another, not saying that Owen will cheat on Cristina or vice versa, but I think there will be something along those lines especially depending on how Mer/Der are going. 6. When Burke got shot, Cristina ran away from him in the operating room, Owen is standing in Cristina's shower all wet in his clothes, she climbs in with him. 7. Burke and Cristina were never friends even though they were together, while Cristina and Owen are developing a friendship as well as a relationship. 8. Cristina is no longer the one being taken care of, Yet she is the one taking care of Owen. 9. Owen said he learns from mistakes so he doesn't make them again, when he asked Cristina out on their date, he said that 'you said you didn't want to play hot and cold' letting her know that he's listening to her. Now exactly where can one find a guy that will listen to you the first time?? LOL I think the mistake theme will be a constant back and forth with Owen, he will take a step forward and a step back. This is partly why I think there might be an affair between one of them and someone else, or a possible one. Especially with the ex in the mix. 10. In the episode where Cristina sees Owen at the bar, he's ordering a beer and some whiskey, then he says "Just the beer I start work tomorrow". Then when we see him in the vulture episode, he calls cristina "single malt scotch". My question will Owen have to make a choice between single malt scotch (cristina), or will he make a mistake a have a beer (Meredith, his ex or someone else)? 11. Many have mentioned that Owen bringing Cristina coffee is reminiscent of when Burke brought her coffee, but I would argue that her reaction is extremely different and shows how much she has matured as a character
