THE MYSTERY OF IZZIE'S STRANGE BEHAVIOR IS UNWITTINGLY SOLVED BY HER INTERNS, AS DEREK FALLS INTO A DARK DEPRESSION AND QUITS, ON ABC'S "GREY'S ANATOMY"
Loretta Devine ("Eli Stone" and "Boston Public") Returns as Adele Webber.
"I Will Follow You into the Dark" - After learning at a deposition that more of his patients have died than survived, Derek decides to quit, even as Meredith refuses to give up on him. Meanwhile Bailey and the Chief continue to bicker over her peds fellowship -- until Adele steps in to mediate -- and Izzie's interns discover something unsettling on a "patient x," unaware that the charts they're looking at are actually Izzie's, on "Grey's Anatomy," THURSDAY, MARCH 12 (9:00-10:02 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network

"Morning?" ;D Well, obviously, the line with Owen is more on Alex, and I like how Alex is developed through it. Owen really is a good mentor who are willing to let interns try. I think he is one of a few doctors in SGH who actually has an open mind. Once again, Owen shows us his intellegence on risk management and decision making (men who take risks are hot btw). Yet, he also knows how to comfort (with his deep voice!)
We also see how he protects people who he loves, i.e. Cristina. Him being avoid from her is totally sensible, but I also love the fact that Cristina shows her love by approaching Owen at the end. That little push on Owen is cute, intimate, and warm. In fact, that just-a-few-seconds scene of them together speaks so much of their love. Finally, Cristina steps up and talks what she wants. When he says, "It's more than a bad dream, " and she says, "I know," I feel so much love from this couple! And that last stroke on his face? Love it! ;D
LOVE THE ENDING! Taking Izzie to the vent is a brilliant idea! Once again, we can see how Owen has affected Cristina. I was surprised and happy about it!
P.S. When I saw Alex's hands were fidgetting, I actually recalled on a scene in Rome, where Brutus is washing his hands after he has killed Caesar.

I loved the theme of shadows that Meredith talks about in the voice over. The idea of fighting and not walking/running away was also very important for so many of the characters.
Okay let's start with Izzy. Finally I can have some sympathy for this character. Her crisis makes some sense. Her secret melancholy juxtaposed against Alex's excitement was very touching. I don't like the poor ethics of Izzy getting all her tests for free but I did like how she taught the interns by using herself. She knows all the symptoms intimately and she would not back down until a dozen brains came up with what she herself was only just beginning to realize. It was a pleasure to see her being nice to George, who is the only one to have a clue up until this point. Some bittersweet irony in talking about the future with Alex and his complete confusion as he tries to listen.
As to Alex himself-oh how cool was he? I loved how he was so unimpressed with the 'band geeks' but in the end he defended the girls to her them I've been hoping to see Owen mentor Karev and we got that in spades tonight. Love how Owen backed him up. Alex needs someone to believe in him and Owen needs some part of his life to go right. IE, he needs to be an effective teacher. He was taking a chance considering how his day had begun but he backed Karev to the hilt even against another Attending. The scene in the OR was so intense. Love Arizona's quiet amazement that Karev had made the right call. Better still was the way Owen recognized what Alex was going through. He was able to be a calming influence and still let Alex keep his dignity. Wonderful stuff.
Then there's the Chief and Bailey. OMG I couldn't believe Adele showed up and gave them both hell. Then again, when is the Chief going to stop pouting like a child and actually do his job? Oh please grow up already. He's just peeved because Bailey is doing what she wants and not stepping forward to take the hospital off his hands. It's almost like he's sick of his job and not willing to try hard enough to fix the problems he has. Honestly,I'm sick of his whining and I was cheering when Bailey gave him what for. For sheer laughs you have the physical comedy of blocking Bailey and the Chief next to each other. I mean there's a foot in height between them FCOL.
*snickers* Love Callie trying to play hard to get with Arizona and then knuckling under. That whole thing could be fun but they need to stop playing it for laughs all the time.
Interesting to watch the family with stomach cancer. The controlling older sister really means well but it's still the brother's decision. You have to grow up sometime. Everyone takes chances every day. I like how Cristina was able to be a part of that. More coping skills I don't think she has and will definitely need.
Mark and Lexie continue to be a sweet interlude to break up the tension. I did feel for Mark though. Everyone is trying to get him to help Derek but he's angry too and justifiably so. Eventually he will be a friend.
The scene in the cafeteria between Meredith, Cristina and Izzy. "Did either of you hear what the other just said?" Uh, NOPE! Probably a good thing too because I really can't believe Cristina would tell them that Owen went all "Apocalypse Now" on her in such a casual way. Especially after she covered for Owen at the beginning of the episode when Meredith walked in on him bandaging her arm.
Meredith and Derek... I'm sorry but I still don't care. Yes it's sad that a lot of people died as a result of procedures that Derek performed. But Meredith is right, many of those people would have died anyway no matter what he did. Clinical trials are often performed on terminal patients who are willing guinea pigs because they want to help those that follow. It's important, necessary research and Derek would understand that. His going off the deep end about the pregnant Jen dying and then getting sued for it makes a bit more sense. It's meant to be cumulative but I was very grateful that we saw little of Derek tonight. He's an arrogant ass and he was bound to fall eventually. Cristina's quiet strength in the face of Owen's trauma is ten times more effective to me than Meredith standing there yelling at Derek's closed camper door. Batting the ring into the darkness...yeah, whatever.
Need to say something about the last scene on the vent before getting to Owen/Cris. I really love how that Vent has become the place to let go. Cristina took Izzy there knowing it was the best place to speak privately no matter how serious. I loved how the dialog was blocked out in favor of music. It could have been very cheesy but considering how the vent has been used up until now, it made perfect sense for Cristina to do this.
So to Owen and Cristina and all the rest. I was quite surprised to see the shoving scene as part of the teaser. I expected to know more contextually about why he's sleeping in a hallway of all places. Maybe the on-call rooms were full up. Though we know they weren't full of Interns as they were all running around with Izzy. Anyway.... Quite a shove and the look of horror on Owen's face, Gods the poor guy. Cristina's "Morning" was well timed and spoken. Later her trying to make light of the situation while Owen works in stoic silence was quite sad. I was not surprised that she covered for him. I was more surprised when he said "It's not fine." and then walked out. Talk about your hanging chad of comments. So I suppose Cristina could have said something but I'm still not buying that she really expected Meredith to hear her. This is a serious. Cristina got hurt even if it was unintentional. Her friends wouldn't just sit by in silence even if they are preoccupied with their own lives. At least I would hope not!
Watching Owen try and pull it together with the sick band member was fascinating. Like a sort of professional shield slipped around him. He was a bit shaky but then he was 'on' so to speak. You wonder how much longer that can really work for him. No surprise that he couldn't work with Cristina after what happened. I did expect her to try and talk to him like he tried to talk to her after Beth's arrival. I do wonder if there wasn't at least one scene where she did try but maybe it was cut out.
Their last scene was so sweet and surprising. Again, I wonder if there was more and it was cut off as the scene ended very abruptly. Love the dialog. "It's more than bad dreams." "I know" and then the totally unexpected touch of her hand to his cheek. I imagine these characters that way in their quieter moments. So nice to see that tonight. There is a true understanding there now. And a commitment by Cristina. She's not going to walk away and leave him alone. He understands that more and more. The second incident that's been hinted is going to be a real test for these two. Maybe that ultimatum of 'get help or I can't stick around' might yes come to pass. Something for his own good IMO.
I seriously enjoyed this episode and I'm looking forward to a re watch.

OK so here are my thoughts so far which will change with or without notice The theme of protection and confronting is prevalent through the whole episode on different levels. Just like Rural doesn't care about Derek, I still dont care about Izzie. This s/l has really started to suck the life out of Grey's. While I can appreciate the fact that someone in that hospital is actually teaching interns, who I might add the brightest are Cristina's, it still annoys me. Izzie in a way is protecting herself from the reality of her illness by making it part of her job. I get that part. But a the same time I have grown tired of caring about anything regarding this character. It did make total sense that she tells Cristina. They have always had this wierd bond between them, where they dont necessarily like each other, but Cristina is very loyal and Izzie knows this. Which is why she chooses Cristina. I love that Cristina took her to the Vent. I think we can really start seeing little snippets of how Owen has had a positive effect, not just on Cristina, but others as well. I have to credit the promos they make things out to be more dramatic as always. Granted Owen's PSTD episode with Cristina is pretty traumatic for him. I can't imagine waking up realizing you have just hurt someone you loved without even knowing. Then we see how Owen's so afraid of hurting Cristina that he avoids her instead of confronting the issue. In her own way Cristina was protecting Owen by cracking jokes, because could see how he was struggling with the incident. I personally love that we see Owen patching up Cristina, it reminds me of the icicle But when he told her its "not ok" you could see his anguish about the entire situation. And you just KNEW that he was going to try and avoid Cristina. I loved the lunch scene where Cris and Mer were talking about their boys, but it wasn't the usual boyfriend talk, they were addressing the serious problems they were having. I love how Cristina said "I'm the strong one!" she honestly is, but there is also something about Owen that makes her weak, and that part I love. I also loved her Apocolypse Now reference as I had just looked at that DVD today at HMV. Strange eh? I didn't really take offence to it, its not like Mer knew what she was talking about, or noticed after she said it. One of the things about Owen is that when he's in distress, he only focuses on one thing at a time. So taking Cristina off of his dept. that day was the only way he could deal (or not deal) with his emotions about the incident. I kind of think it makes sense that Alex and Cristina are always number one and two. I am starting to notice how Alex is starting to become Cristina's competition, but also that he is becoming a better doctor. A far cry from the guy who failed his boards and had no bedside manner. I also loved how Owen and Arizona teach. They are both really good at letting the residents or interns figure things out on their own. Owen is able to tune into people's strengths and help them focus. And Arizona is great at cheering them on. I love Owen and AZ as teachers together they make a great team. I have to say too that Alex has not always been my favorite character, but he has always shown glimpses of what a great doctor he can be and also a person. I agree that Owen has become quite the mentor for Alex not only professionally but also in his personal life. Alex's interactions with the band geek were brillliant, I also really enjoyed how Owen takes control of his own emotions and basically does his job. If Cristina was there I dont htink he could focus. The chief and Bailey what can I say just hilarious at times. I am loving that we got to see Adele. I have missed her so much! I love how she told both of them off for being childish So fun. I can see where both are coming from though, and it kind of reinterates what I mean when I say I think the chief will retire soon. Lexie and Mark, I couldn't have really cared if they were in this or not, but its interesting how Lexie is turning into one of the best interns. Callie and Arizona are cute and all but when will they have a real conversation please? I"m sure a lot of fans will be mad that they forgot that George was also 007 at one point LOL So on the scene with Cris and Owen, I really loved how she went up to him with the little shove and how she basically told him she was in it with him. When she said the part about the bad dreams and he said it was mroe than bad dreams, it was good to see that they both acknowledge even further the battle they have ahead. Of course her stroking his face was very sweet, I love these sweet moments between them. So the Derek stuff, is kind of boring, but I can see how it is supposed to be important. I can also understand his depression and why he's being an ass to Meredith. I dont know if I like that she said she knows about the ring. That was kind of lame, and I think considering the situaiton, it was pretty selfish of Meredith to bring the conversation back to her. Meredith tries hard and all, but she is still kind of selfish and Derek isn't ready to be comforted right now. All you can do in a situation like this is let the person know that you are there when they are ready to talk. I'm sure more will come to me on a second viewing but these are my thoughts for now

I agree that Owen cannot focus on more than one thing at a time when he's stressed out. He didn't have much choice but to put Cristina off his service that day. Good points about AZ and Owen being good teachers and working well together.

One other small item of note
When Cristina walks into the office to speak to Owen his back is turned to the door. She clears her throat before walking up and giving him a shove. A small warning before actually touching him. Not something she could have done in the hallway earlier but something she realizes is necessary and more than simple courtesy. Announcing yourself in that way is something you might do with anyone who has their back to you. Of course not just anyone might turn around and accidentally send you for a fly.

well you guys covered just about everything I was disappointed that Kevin's Screen time seems to be back to about 3 mins.... I think Izzie stole the show last night I was touch by your emotions .... and Derek was good to but in a different way its just nice to see the actors acting differently to there norm....Also Alex.
Owen and Cris's scene when Cris walked in on him while on the PC conveyed alot, her terms to this relationship, him acknowledging that his condition is not a once off nightmare but something he will be dealing with for a while....it was touching and we get really good definition to the characters and storyline every episode with these two. You can feel and see the development. ~ look forward to the next episode PS screencaps to be uploaded soon

The way Cristina approached Owen both times with soft eyes and loving touches was an awww moment for me. Cristina, who rarely touches others and seldom welcomes them touching her, has changed since beginning her relationship with this man. I expected her to dismiss the incident as merely an accident and not let it affect her feelings for Owen, but not to quite the degree she showed. I was glad that Owen patched her up, because it tells me that he wants to make it right. I loved their conversation at the computer and Cristina stroking his face. I worry a little at what's in store for her next week. (Did you catch that he was "mousing" with his RIGHT hand??)
Owen mentoring Alex in the ER and backing his diagnosis to Arizona was good to see. His talking Alex down from the little panic with the paddles makes me wonder if Owen has always been that way, or has learned something new from Cristina helping him cope with his own panic attacks.
The funniest line of the night was around the lunch table when Izzie says, " I can just see you two in your nursing home, 50 years from now, talking to each other with your hearing aids turned off."

Of course being such a huge owen/chris fan, I was left wanting more of them on the episode. Yet I was blown away by home much of their story they are able to convey in the brief moments we get to see them together.
I was also pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the rest of the storylines this episode.

Yeah, liked the lunch table banter, except for the fact that the incident is mentioned so casually by Cristina after she went to the trouble of covering it up. Doesn't make much sense iMO.
I also agree that Owen has learned something from Cristina in regards to panic attacks. It could also be a bit of a left over from having to deal with panicking people in the field. He hasn't forgotten what he learned in the army after all.
I saw that he was using the mouse with his right hand. It didn't seem odd to me as my husband is also left handed and uses his right hand on the mouse.

Welcome to de-lurkdom
Noticed the use of the name yes. He's done that a few times already. Notably in the scene where he tries to get Cris to talk to him about Beth and then turns around to find her standing in the hallway. I believe he uses it in the storeroom scene after the disasterous 'first date' as well.

It's finally my turn to chime in. Overall, I thought this was a good episode. Kevin didn't have as much screentime as he's had in the past few episodes but with an ensemble cast such as this and so many big storylines going on at once you have to accept the fact that there will be episodes like this one. And this week, was clearly Izzie's week. Let me start by saying that I agree with rural and that I too liked what Meredith said in the voiceover about shadows.
The whole idea of "shadows" worked well in this episode on many levels, as it does throughout the season. Namely, we have the theme of the internal struggle and fighting with one's own shadow, Derek hiding out in the shadows, actual shadow-Derek (Jim Nelson...or was it John?) and, of course, Owen as a shadow of his former self.
I think it's also becoming apparent that a major theme of the season is broken people being put together (or more eloquently, healing). That is never more evident than when we hear Mark tell Lexie that she fixed him. Meredith is, I think, going to heal Derek. I hazard a guess and say that all of the gang will pull together to try and heal Izzie. Cristina is clearly on the path to helping Owen heal and is coincidentally finding that he's healing her as well when it comes to being able to live and love again. Last season she declared that she felt like a ghost and she's been called a robot in the past (in fact, even Izzie said it this episode) but we know from her interactions with Owen that the part of Cristina which is capable of caring for people, is showing itself again. And indeed it shows itself in this episode at the end when Cristina takes Izzie to the vent.
I find it interesting that this episode comes right after an episode where the whole focus was on the fact that Cristina was a bully to someone who needed compassion. If you contrast that with the way she treated Owen this week and, to an extent, Izzie, it almost feels like you're looking at 2 entirely different people. It's clear that Owen brings out the best in Cristina. That's evident from the way Cristina looked for him in the hallways and walked towards him with such a tender look on her face to the soft and intimate manner in which she touched his shoulders and leaned over him to wake him up. It's a side of Cristina that we rarely see. She's strong and tough but she is soft as well.
I enjoyed the way she tried to make light of the situation when he was fixing her up by telling him of the dream when she woke up pulling Meredith's hair ("ha!"). Owen wasn't having a bar of it though, and slipped right back into professional mode by calling her "Dr Yang" and telling her to rest the elbow. As if this guy needed any more inner turmoil, now he has to cope with the fact that he's unwittingly injured his girlfriend.
I really liked the interactions between Alex and Owen. Alex is a person who hasn't had much opportunity to shine so I appreciated the fact that once again Owen was there bringing out the best in someone and being a teacher. The scene where Owen is trying to decide whether to "shock her and kill her or shock her and save her" was so nicely played by Kevin, as was the talking Alex down from the panic attack. I definitely think it was a combination of Owen having learnt from Cristina how to deal with the panic attacks and just being used to high pressure situations.
It was sort of tragic, however, to realise that while Alex might be shiny and happy now, his world is about to come crashing down. Actually, for me that was the tragedy of the entire episode, just watching Izzie going around the hospital as though breathing and taking everything in for the last time and imagining what everyone else's futures will be like because clearly she doesn't envisage being around for them.
The lunchroom conversation between Cristina and Meredith was amusing but I had to suspend my disbelief a little (or alot) when Cristina made the "Apocalypse Now" comment and Meredith didn't ask any questions. Once again I think we see Shonda reveal her hand as to her plan for Meredith and Cristina this season in the way that she has them sitting around talking about the fact that THEY are the strong ones. A couple of seasons ago, that wouldn't have been the case. They were both the ones used to running and hiding. Now they are staying and fighting. And it's a good thing that Cristina believes she is so strong because between Owen and Izzie, she is going to have a lot of burdens to bear over the next few weeks.
It's no secret that the patients at SGH are there to teach the doctors about themselves or to somehow tie into what they're going through. This week, the 3 siblings at risk of getting stomach cancer were on the one hand there to teach Meredith that you don't leave someone you love alone but also to let Cristina realise that she gets to decide when she's afraid and when she's had enough. That speech by the brother that "this is your fear, it's not mine. Let me decide when I'm scared" was a total lightbulb moment for Cristina, which led to her last interaction with Owen.
Which brings me finally to that scene. It was short and I would have loved to have seen more but I think that what we got was still significant. Cristina finally verbalised the fact that she is in this and sticking around even though they both know that there are big problems for Owen beneath the surface. Again, it was one of those incredibly intimate moments on an emotional level.
If you were listening to the lyrics of the song that played at the very end, you would have heard that "a storm is gonna come". I think this is just the calm before it...for everyone.

Something that just popped in my head, do you think it is just a coincidence that the band geek was also Asian-American like Cristina? I wonder if she reminded Owen even of Cristina in that sense, making it harder for him and more determined to save her life, willing to try anything, even going on Karev's gut instincts... I'm probabaly just reading too much into it, esp since race has always been a non issue in this show, i'm not trying to make it an issue here, just on the grounds that she resembles Cristina a bit esp in certain aspects of her personality. In a lot of ways Cristina is like the band geek, an over achiever, determined, and struggles on a social level. ..Anyway just a thought.
