Further on the discussion about shadows....
I think part of Dr. Nelson's (john...wait no jim) and the fact that he and Mark had some interaction was to highlight that Mark has been living in Derek's shadow as well. Mark has been taking Derek's passive aggressive comments like a beat down dog. Remember the scene from previous episode when mark was helping Derek set up the bedroom for the proposal, and mark tried to talk to derek about love and perhaps spill about Lexie...only to have Derek shoot him down (once again) and say that "you don't get to talk about that" as in Derek still thinks of his friend as a man-whore and incapable of a real relationship. So in this episode, now that the two best of friends have had their fist fight, Mark fully gets it that he doesn't need to continue seeking Dereks approval anymore. Mark has stepped out of the shadow - his reputation from the past - and walks proudly with lexie on his arm. (to be honest though i find them too cutsie as a couple and don't get them - but I did like mark's growth)
Even mer is stepping out from Dereks shadow and showing she is strong enough to stand on her own. If Derek keeps up this verbal abuse he may lose her.
Alex is finally believing in himself and stepping out of his shadow. Owen has been a great mentor and confidence builder for him. I can totally see Alex being the up and coming trauma surgeon. Izzie has also been great for him as well. Alex is kind of Izzie's fix him project. I find it sad that it doesn't go both ways and Alex isn't Izzie's go to person. I find their relationship hard to watch because it is dysfunctional.
Poor George is still trying to get out of the shadow from last season but still no one is really giving him any respect. He has been trying quietly but desperately to get someone to take notice that something is clearly wrong with Izzie, but because of the situation no one is taking him seriously enough. Even when he is hanging around with the gang, he is still on the outside.
Owen is still trying to figure out how to cope with his shadow. He is trying to protect Christina from the part of him that he has lost control of by pushing her away and trying to make it professional again. Chris can't fix him, but she can certainly support him as he works through the fallout from PTSD. I am so glad she found the strength to let him know she's there for him. I don't think they will take their relationship to the bedroom quite yet. He's still feeling too out of control. He will likely continue to be a workaholic as that is the one place he still feels normal and useful.
On the PTSD note, it's interesting to me that tv/movies in the past portrayed soldiers with broken minds as homeless bums. While this is possible, one of the truths about PTSD is that one of the common threads is that they become workaholics - focusing on work/duty allows them to continue being detached from their emotions. We see them as functioning in society - working - so we figure oh well they must be doing ok, while in reality they are suffering. I love that the Grey's writers are bringing this aspect of the struggle veterans go through to life in the show.

It's finally my turn to chime in. It's no secret that the patients at SGH are there to teach the doctors about themselves or to somehow tie into what they're going through. This week, the 3 siblings at risk of getting stomach cancer were on the one hand there to teach Meredith that you don't leave someone you love alone but also to let Cristina realise that she gets to decide when she's afraid and when she's had enough. That speech by the brother that "this is your fear, it's not mine. Let me decide when I'm scared" was a total lightbulb moment for Cristina, which led to her last interaction with Owen.
Which brings me finally to that scene. It was short and I would have loved to have seen more but I think that what we got was still significant. Cristina finally verbalised the fact that she is in this and sticking around even though they both know that there are big problems for Owen beneath the surface. Again, it was one of those incredibly intimate moments on an emotional level. If you were listening to the lyrics of the song that played at the very end, you would have heard that "a storm is gonna come". I think this is just the calm before it...for everyone. Thanks for putting into words what I was trying to figure out regarding the three siblings. I saw that whole interaction as very important to Cristina but just couldn't put my finger on how!
I missed the song lyrics. thanks!

Wow, thanks Kaz! I was wondering what the sibling storyline had to do with anything. I totally missed that!
