Is it too much to have wanted the love scene between Owen and Cristina to be more like a promise of their future together, even though they are separating? I know corny and everything, but wouldn't it have been better to digest than Cristina breaking it off the way she did. Leanne Thank YOU!!!! ;D

Thought after second and third watch: I still think that the sex is a combination between love and caution. It's one big bulk of passion (love and fear) in both of them. Actually, this emotional between love and fear goes through the whole episode in these two. The vent scene is so important to build up the sex and the break up. The break up is a recognition for Cristina to admit what Owen says before: they should break up. This is a mutual agreement (at least that's what I think). The sex and the break up is one big test for them, because they care about this relationship, love each other. It reflects to Alex's VO at the end, and I also recall another Chinese saying, "Real gold never afraid of the fire in a crucible." At least they didn't avoid the fire. I think their love will become better and better.

dittos on the WOW! I've watched it three times all the way through, and I'm not done yet. This is the best episode EVER. As a "from the very beginning" Greys fan, I thought Derek's proposal in the elevator was absolutely perfect. His little retrospective of the cases that highlight their professional and personal time together was exactly right, and reminded us long-time viewers of what has made this couple so special.
To me, it was especially rewarding to hear the true "I want to spend the rest of my life with you" speech that got ruined in season 4, when Der said, "I want to marry you, have kids with you, build us a house, die in your arms when I'm 110, BUT......" My heart almost stopped then, so you can imagine what I felt like hearing it for real.
We haven't seen Derek's ferryboat scrub cap since it disappeared in season 4 when Mer/Der had their big breakup. I had always wondered where it went, but my guess now is that Mer had filched it and kept it as a memento, like Cristina had one of Burke's, which she also returned for a crucial surgery.
The rest of you have been so eloquent with your take on Cris/Owen that I can't add much. My heart was breaking for them the whole episode. Darn! I wish I hadn't sneaked a peek at the boards before I got home to watch, because I knew from reading just 2 lines what was going to happen. KMK and SO's fabulous interpretation of the scenes still blew me away. Owen's arm flopping in resignation and longing just before he asks, "Can I hold you?" is one of the tiny details that tears me apart. Owen is SO wrecked and Kevin plays it so well.

Hmmm... Call me weird or a realist, but I really was glad about everything these two did in the episode. The main thing is that they try to find ways to make sure that each other is feeling comfortable, yet, they also have doubts about their decisions. As I said before, each of them is a burden to each other, and they can sense that, but still cannot admit that (mostly Cristina who cannot admit). I think what makes me sad but also happy is the make love scene. You can see by their expressions, that this sex is not for self-pleasure but for the last touch of their burden which they deeply love. That's why, in the make love scene, they faces are expressions of grief yet comfort. Still, what they did is to make sure the other is comfortable, which is also the purpose of the break up (I think Owen already have the expectation of what Cristina is going to say, just that he still have some disappointment, that's why he asks her what does she mean). Everything is done due to not just love but also respect (which is the ultimate Chinese way to be in a relationship).
Well, but of course, this is America, so that's why KMK promised us that there will be some light stuff at the end of the season. If this is written by a Chinese (like me), Owen will be long gone, but this short relationship will certainly be carved in Cristina's heart forever, and this can be something powerful. Sorry for being repetitive, and being somewhat like a Chinese nationalistic-ambassador. I just want to clarify and emphasize by point of view.

What an amazing 41 or so minutes of television viewing. Definitely the best episode of the season so far. I will reserve my final judgment until the end of the season however, as I suspect there is even better to come. This episode has me completely floored and I am struggling to find words to discuss it. But I will give it my best shot. For the first time in perhaps the history of the show (or at least a long time) everyone got everything right. From the writing, to the direction, the acting, editing and sound...this all just came together the way it was supposed to.
I think one of the things that made it so powerful was the absence of patients. There were no major medical dramas to and from which the characters were supposed to listen and learn. It was just about them. As people. Being each other's people. Or failing to be. Meredith and Callie were Cristina's people. Bailey was Izzie's person, where Alex, George, Meredith and Cristina should have been. The Chief and Meredith were there for Alex & Derek. Derek was there for Owen. Arizona was there for Callie who was there for George. And Cristina was trying, with everything she had in her, to be there for Owen despite the trauma and the war wounds.
I knew going into it that this episode would be difficult to watch. Painful to digest. But I didn't really anticipate quite how excrutiating it all would feel. It truly made me realise how much I just want Cristina and Owen to "get there" and have their happy ending, which was sort of their beginning that we saw in the season premiere.
I loved the way we started, with Cristina and Owen on Cristina's bed watching medical dvds. Like it was the most normal thing in the world for Cristina to share this side of herself with someone other than Meredith. And then the lights went out and all hell broke loose.
The look on Owen's face (kudos to Kevin) was so vacant and frightening and Cristina's response to the attack so real and traumatic, that the whole thing gave me chills.
I am still reeling a bit from the fact that Shonda even went there. It seemed like it was going too far, especially watching it play out on the screen so realistically but the fact is, from a real life point of view this type of thing really happens. Also, drama-wise, this was the propulsion that Owen needed to get help. He and Cristina both struggled with that through the whole episode and I loved watching their varying stages of denial. From Cristina's scenes with Meredith, to Owen's with Derek and then the vent scene where Owen is trying to break it off while Cristina fights him and then ends up just wanting to kiss her, before she pulls back and walks away. Every second of it made my heart ache.
Which brings me to the most painful scene of all. I don't think I can ever recall seeing a love scene (because no way that was just a "sex" scene) which was so poignantly beautiful. They've been building to this moment for a long time and Kevin was right when he said they didn't want it to just be a quickie in an on-call room, that everything had to be right. This couldn't have been more perfect. I agree rural, that this scene was a goodbye as well as a promise. I also think it was an apology on Owen's part and acceptance of that by Cristina and affirmation by her that despite everything, they were okay (which, of course, they're not because they still can't "be" but in terms of her feelings for him, nothing has been damaged).
Once again the first word that comes to mind when I think of these two is intimacy. The scene started with Owen and Cristina so far away from each other but my heart broke when he so tentatively asked if he could hold her, and then Cristina closed the space between them.
We are used to seeing sex scenes which are fun and HOT on this show, but seeing Cristina and Owen standing there with their scrub tops off, just caressing and kissing each other, I could only marvel at the sheer visual beauty of it all. There was a lot of emphasis on touch and eye contact and I think it really drove home that this couple is so connected, in every way. I had to keep reminding myself that this was Cristina. CRISTINA. Cristina who doesn't cry, who doesn't do romance, who about 14 episodes ago had an itch that she was almost happy for an intern to scratch. Cristina. The robot. Girlfriend has let down some walls.
The break up was of course no surprise. If you read spoilers, like I do (religiously), you would have known that this episode was where Cristina and Owen would be forced to take a step back from each other. But I didn't imagine that Cristina would ultimately be the one to pull away.
Part of me still grieves for this relationship which has ended after building up for the last 12 episodes or so into something incredibly special. However, there's another part of me which is hopeful. Hopeful that this will give Owen and Cristina an opportunity for a new beginning as Owen starts to heal. And hopeful that we really will see the "before" Owen start to creep back and get more of those sexy, fun moments which we were lucky enough to see in the season premiere mixed with the emotional intimacy that these two now have as a result of this experience.
I will be interested to see how the next few episodes play out. Obviously we will be focussing on Owen's journey and struggle but I wonder if and how Cristina will be able to play a part in it. She has come so far in terms of opening up and allowing herself to feel for this man who is so badly broken right now. And she's been quite adamant for a long time that she's not going to abandon him. I hope that the walls do not come back up again, in an attempt at self-preservation. I really don't think they will but you never know what Shonda has in store.
*Sigh*. Now we have 4 weeks to wait.

Yeah, I feel emotional. Damien Rice is a good choice, especially the early stuff (on O and the B Sides).

I'm sorry, but I kind of have a problem (even feeling uncomfortable) with the behaviour of Meredith and Callie to Owen. I mean, protecting your friend is one thing, but you have to read the situation in context. Another thing is, did you realize that after the incident, only Cristina was asked whether she is okay? No one asked Owen whether HE is okay! They should know by now that he got PTSD, that this is unintentional. Also, it must be unbearable for Owen to be around those Meredith and Callie after what he has done. But no, not a word of comfort to the man! And speaking about being doctors? Meredith and Callie, shame on you!
With those looks from Mer and Callie, obviously, Owen doesn't really have a friend in the hospital except Cristina. Probably, Cristina is the only connection that Owen has right now. Well, it's better that he got Derek as a supporter, but I also concern how much Derek can be a supporter to him? For Owen, there's no one except Cristina who he can share his pain. I don't know, but there's a potential that he might hurt himself at the end (bite my tongue already!).

I'm wondering who else is on the pregnancy bandwagon now after this episode? The possibility of pregnancy with Cristina and Owen is interesting to consider, especially because of the contrast of what Alex and Izzie are going through and right before Alex tells Meredith that this isnt how me and Izzie were supposed to make babies, then you have Owen and Cristina making love a couple scenes later. It would kind of explain Kevin's words in the article about how Cristina and Owen will be thrown a curveball that is both good and bad because of the timing. His mother coming would only really affect Owen per se, but its the only reason why I think there might be a pregnancy (she still has a 50% chance) and could also explain how it would go into next season.
I am not a fan of cliche's and I know pregnancy has been done before with Cristina, but I thinK Owen and Cristina are a couple that are always breaking the cliche's you think it will go one way but it goes another, better way. Thoughts?

I'm not on the pregnancy bandwagon. I think it would be a rehash and like an anvil hitting us over the head to show us how much Cristina has grown and how different this is to her relationship with Burke. I prefer more subtle comparisons.
That said, they've had sex now so it's not completely impossible for Shonda to go there. I just hope she doesn't.
I think the curveball is more likely to be Owen's mother. I haven't quite worked it through in my head to figure out how that is both good and bad for Owen AND Cristina. However, the fact that she represents his "Before" and shows up when he is working his way back to being that man could raise all sorts of questions as to how and where Cristina will fit into his life.

George, to your question on how Mer and Callie are treating Owen - remember that both Owen and Yang have been keeping his issues to themselves (and as the audience we see what is really going on with him). The rest of the hospital just sees "GI Joe", bad ass trauma surgeon. So imagine their horror to witness what to them would be violence and abusive behaviour.
also, to play out the whole PTSD experience for soldiers, the writers need to show the isolation PTSD suffers feel, and how they get labled as abusers, domestic violence, instead of people needing help, treatment and support for their operational stress injuries.

It wouldn't surprise me if Cristina came up pregnant, though it wouldn't be my choice for them at the present time.
C/O's storyline is eerily tracking Cristina and Burke's--one of them smitten right off the bat, a kiss out of the blue, patient care mentoring by the attending, the coffee offer, the date that didn't pan out, Cristina offering emotional support, Cristina's reaction to her man's medical/mental issues, and hiding that serious medical secret from the rest of the staff. I can see the parallels continuing if Cris supports Owen's recovery from his PTSD, meets his mother as a direct result of it, gets pregnant from the one-time sex.
In all the similar situations, Cristina has reacted differently with Owen. I do believe she loved Burke and he loved her, but her relationship with Owen is on a completely different level--she has been sharing what's inside her head and heart with Owen from the very beginning, and that never really happened with Burke. A Cristina pregnancy is the only thing I can think of that would be a "curve ball" mirroring C/B that would be good and bad (timing wise) for C/O.

I'm not saying I necessarily WANT her to be pregnant but it might explain the comments KMK made. I wouldn't mind a baby depending on how they handle the situation. Owen is already father-like in some respects, even though he is definately NOT ready to be one. And Cristina is very motherly, especially in recent months, but in terms of Mer I think Cristina is kind of like a mother substitute.
Another speculation I have is that Owen will be the next Chief, but that would be further down the line.. I have a theory that Cristina and Owen are kind of mirrors of Ellis and the Chief, when you really start thinking about the layering it kind of makes sense esp with the diaries.

Well, maybe I was wrong, since this is Grey's Anatomy.

George, I think Meredith and Callie are keeping Owen from Cris immediately after the incident because Cristina has not yet acknowledged how dangerous Owen's PTSD manifestations could be for her. Both of them saw her hug and forgive a man who nearly choked her to death, and they are fearful Cris could put herself in that situation again until she realizes it's not ok. If you rewatch, you will notice Callie takes the more defensive stance (after all, she witnessed the choking), and Meredith looks down like she's sorry she has to keep him away, but knows its best for Cris. These two women are Cristina's closest friend and roommate, and Owen is still mainly unknown to them, so yes, I can see them protecting their friend first and working the rest out later.

Its sort of like when Derek wanted to tlak to Meredith after Addie showed up, Izzie and Cristina totally blocked him from talking to her, but it definately was not the same situation. If Cris were my friend and I witnessed that I'd be afraid for her to untill I really knew what the situation really was. To them its just Owen almost killing Cristina, PSTD had not yet been publicly acknowledged, it was just an Owen/Cris thing.
