Grooving to "Grey's Anatomy"
A couple of weeks ago on "Grey's Anatomy" Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), were napping in the on call room at the hospital when Yang was jolted awake by Hunt trying to strangle the life out of her.
That pivotal moment and several others like it are why "Grey's Anatomy" has become appointment TV viewing again. Of course it hasn't been a perfect season, like say, "Lost" or "24"--Izzie's affair with her dead lover Denny pretty much took that mantle off their shoulders--but overall, it's been a redeeming season for "Grey's."
Now remember, this is the same show that a couple of months ago I was calling "Grey's Lobotomy." And honestly, who could blame me with some of the stuff going on around that hospital?
"Grey's" is a lot like a boyfriend you aren't sure if you really like. You hate his friends, he forgets to call you when he's going to be late, and sex with him is like sleeping with warm pudding. On the other hand, he has a steady job, rubs your feet when you get home from work, and listens attentively when you talk.
This season "Grey's" listened attentively to all the complaints about last season. And as the show approaches its 100th episode, in which it's rumored Mer/Der will get married, now is as good a time as any to recap.
Whiny, angst ridden, Meredith who I could barely stomach a couple of seasons ago h
as finally grown up. Derek was the one with a major crisis of confidence and Meredith was the one who propped him up for a change. Then when he finally asked Meredith to marry him, he did it with an "Elevator Love Letter" and she said yes.
Miranda Bailey is still marvelous. She bucked the Chief's plans for her to succeed him by deciding to specialize in pediatrics. Watching Miranda deal with letting him down was like watching a daughter break away from a doting father and push out on her own. It was sweet and sad at the same time.
How cool is Alex Karev this season? I always knew he had the makings of a good surgeon and a good man and damned if he didn't prove me right. Though he's back with Izzie--a downside if you ask me--he's re-dedicated himself to medicine and excelled.
Mark Sloan developed real feelings for Meredith's little sister, Lexie, or Little Grey as she's called, and tried to prove he was capable of satisfying a woman out of bed as well as in. For his trouble, Little Grey broke his thingy during sex--yeah, you heard me--and Derek nearly broke the rest of him when he found out about the two of them.
The best cast addition was Kevin McKidd as Dr. Owen Hunt, an Iraqi war veteran who's attracted to Cristina but also suffers from post traumatic stress disorder. He attacked Cristina in his sleep and had no idea what he was doing until he'd nearly choked her to death.
Cristina, in a rare show of compassion, understood what happened and chose to support Hunt. In a lovely scene at the end of the episode, the two make love for the first time, but things are spoiled when Cristina reluctantly admits she's afraid to fall asleep if Hunt stays with her. That forces him to finally seek help for his condition.
Hunt is a great character and I'm loving the dose of realism he brings to the hospital that can get a little too goofy at times. And Kevin McKidd is a welcome addition for his acting skills and his luscious good looks.
As far as Cristina, she's still an icy, robot of a woman who would have trouble expressing an emotion if her hair follicles were being pulled out one by one.
A perfect example was when, Cristina was supposed to be prepping a woman (Mrs. Kim from "Gilmore Girls") for surgery. The woman is scared out of her mind and fumbles with a list of questions. Cristina brushes her off like a spec of lint from her lab coat and it's only later when the woman is on the operating table and begs Cristina for some reassurance, that Dr. Yang deigns to give her the smallest crumb.
Yeah, not in any way a Cristina fan.
The best episodes so far this season involved William, a serial killer played with quiet menace by Eric Stoltz. He's on death row but is brought to the hospital because of a life threatening knife wound. Derek resents having to care for William but Meredith is somewhat sympathetic to his pain. William's due to be executed in days, and when he finds out his liver is a match for a dying boy, he wants to go untreated so he can be a donor.
Derek refuses to let William get out of being executed and when Derek's mother visits, played by the wonderful Tyne Daly, we discover why: Derek's father was killed years before by robbers trying to steal his watch.
The other end of the plot involves the dying boy, a patient Bailey's taken care of for nearly three years. She's desperate to help him and even goes so far as to ask Derek not to save William's life so the boy can get his liver.
The plot is resolved over several episodes and culminates in Meredith attending William's execution at his request. It's a memorable episode and Ellen Pompeo and Eric Stoltz are fantastic. On Pompeo's side, you never feel that Meredith is being manipulated into attending the execution. She's simply making a human to human gesture in spite of Williams horrific crimes. On Stoltz's side you never feel that William isn't a monster, but you do come to see that he feels a real fear of death. Good acting all around.
Of course there were "Grey's" controversies, on and off the screen.
Some viewers got all bent out of shape when the Callie/Hahn lesbian romance was snuffed out before it really started because Brooke Smith who played Dr. Hahn was fired. I thought the relationship was forced and lacked chemistry, so I was glad when the pair split.
Now they've brought in a new love interest for Callie, Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw). This character at least is interesting, though I think they've now turned Callie into a bit of a simp. Please guys, bring back the feisty gal I used to like before George got done with her.
Another controversy, last year Katherine Heigl got all bent out of shape because she didn't feel she had a storyline that was Emmy-worthy. So this year they gave her an affair with the aforementioned dead lover, Denny. How do you like that, Kate? Better for ya'? Having hot, sweaty sex with your dead boyfriend?
Turns out it was Denny's way of telling Izzie that she's dying of a brain tumor and could keel over at any moment. Let's hope it's sooner than later.
Can you tell I'm not an Izzie fan? Izzie is the anti-Cristina and I dislike them both.
Then a couple of months ago, Heigl and T.R. Knight were both reportedly leaving the show and then the next day they weren't. As of now, only their hairdressers, and Shonda Rhimes, know for sure.
"Grey's Anatomy" will return with new episodes on April 23rd and the season finale airs May 14th.
