I just want to say that to me the Callie situation is not implausible. If she's been supported by daddy all this time, she's probably never really learnt to save or manage her money. People without money are much better at being wise with it than people who have it by the bucketload. So now she is faced with actually having to become an adult and manage her own life financially. She can't just learn to do that overnight. Agreed. I know of at least one couple personally who made nearly twice as much money as we did at one time. They did not live in an expensive area and had no children. They declared bankruptcy because they had no idea how to manage their finances even with all of the resources available to them. Budgeting is a new skill for Callie and it can be incredibly stressful on any relationship. My only quibble about Callie/Arizona was the fact that Arizona kept showing up in the middle of the ER crisis instead of saving her complaints/concerns for a more appropriate time.

Upon second viewing, I'm seeing where this episode hangs together a little better for me. The first time through, I was having a hard time keeping track of all the students, so their stories didn't make the maximum impression on me.
After watching again, and reading some more, I can see where the 100th episode is intended to be not so much a "spectacular" but rather a pretty significant milestone in our residents lives. Now I can see the "growing up, responsibility taking, moving forward" theme the surviving student made the core of her graduation speech. Alex made it very clear that his and Izzie's life has started anew with the marriage and fighting her cancer. Mer stepped forward out of her dismal, whiny past with the solo surgery, the truce with the Chief, and her impending marriage. Cristina, since Owen (the good and the bad), has finally allowed her softer side to show, to Izzie and Owen, and on occasion, even to patients. The reasoning behind her destruction of the ceiling fan is unclear at this moment, since she backed away from every one of Owen's overtures in the episode, but she's definitely preparing for a change. George, under Owen's tutelage, has moved up the ranks to capable trauma team member, and I think is looking to spend the next few years finding a niche outside of SGH. Callie has left "daddy's little girl" behind, and is finally taking responsibility for her finances and life choices. Owen is reaching beyond "the After", and making progress in his therapy, even if it is without Cris at this point. Mark is finally "owning" his relationship with Lexie publicly with that "arm around the shoulders" in the packed church.
Without the musings of this board and others, a lot of the significance of this episode would have flown right over my head, since I'm not one who typically analyzes things the way some of you do. Thanks to you all for helping me see the finer points of these stories.

singer, I'm glad my comments and those of others on here helped you to see another side of that episode. It's all so subjective and we're no experts so I guess there's a chance that we're seeing more than we're meant to. But after reading the writer's blog and listening to the podcast (which I didn't do before I reviewed), I don't think so.

Isn't it kind of ironic now that they are trying to get Izzie to have an operation that may or may not erase her memory, and in the season premiere, Alex and Izzie were kind of making fun of the woman who had the traumatic brain injury from the car crash, who also lost her husband. Interesting how they are kind of going to be facing a similar situation, only they will have a choice to either have the operation, or have Izzie die.

This is just another one of those things in the season premiere that has played out in the rest of the season. There are lots of ways to look at all the pieces symbolically and I won't go into them now, but I definitely don't think it was a coincidence that Izzie was looking after Betty with amnesia in the SP and now may have it herself. I saw the parallel before the amnesia possibility came up for Izzie - I thought we were just supposed to realise that Betty had something wrong with her brain and Izzie does too, now I see the link is stronger than that.
