Radio Work "Sunset Song" for BBC Radio Scotland (no date)...Ewan Tavendale Information supplied via Kevinmckiddonline/guestbook Courtesy of Vicki Masson (actress, Rob Roy), who played Chris Guthrie to Kevin's Ewan in "Sunset Song" for BBC Radio Scotland Sunset Song by Lewis Grassic Gibbon (1901 - 1935) remains one of the most evocative works of Scottish literature. Its themes of constancy and change, seen through the eyes of central character Chris Guthrie, are often considered a metaphor for the state of Scotland itself. Fritz Lang's 1931 masterpiece was voted the most important German film of all-time by several hundred film critics and scholars. Featuring Peter Lorre's striking debut as suspected serial killer Hans Beckert, 'M' shows Berlin gripped with fear as a murderer preys on the city's children against a backdrop of political unrest and rising criminality. Kevin McKidd stars as Beckert in Peter Straughan's radio version, which acknowledges the debt that Lang owed to the radio pioneers who paved the way for his innovative and telling first steps in the use of sound in movies. Written as an epic fairy tale consisting of a dedication six "songs" or "cantos" and an epilogue, this masterpiece tells the story of the abduction of Prince Vladimir of Kiev's daughter, Ludmila, by an evil spirit and the attempt by the brave knight Ruslan to find and rescue her.
