It is 15 years since the curtain went up on the Out of the Darkness Theatre Company and a host of names from stage and screen have stepped in to give it their support.
Patron Kevin McKidd has donated a jacket he wore in the cult movie 'Trainspotting' and Dame Shirely Bassey has sent a pair of her glamorous sunglasses.
Kevin, who is from Elgin, is currently in America where he recently filmed the sci-fi series 'Journey Man' which was screened on Sky One.
The collectors' items, along with autographed photos of big names including John Hurt and Glenn Close, are being auctioned on eBay and are expected to attract bids from across the UK.
A host of fantastic lots will also be coming under the hammer at an auction night at the Eight Acres Hotel in Elgin on Friday, March 21, with the evening featuring a performance of a 'Cry Out', the company's presentation of the rich heritage of the local area, when people made their living from the land and the sea, told through the pages of a book.
The professional theatre company, based at Elgin Town Hall, is committed to social inclusion and provides education and training in theatre skills – both performance and on the technical side – for adults with learning difficulties and through its work seeks to challenge public perceptions.
The venture was the inspiration of Ruth Breheny who was manager of the Hamilton Drive Centre in Elgin for adults with special needs and from its beginnings as a well supported voluntary organisation, has developed into a professional company with charitable status and has a service-level agreement with Moray Council.
Open Monday to Thursday, Out of the Darkness runs multi arts, performance, media and technical groups and under the guidance of artistic director Tina McGeever, its services are much in demand from organisations across Scotland. The company regularly tours in Scotland and has also visited the Middle East.
DVDs have been produced recording the work of other local projects, explained production manager Bob Sharp.
A bumper bundle of star-studded lots are coming under the hammer to support the Out of the Darkness Theatre Company which was founded 15 years ago. NS
"We have provided social awareness training to Moray Council, Aberdeenshire Council and Renfrewshire Council and have also worked with schools, councils and groups to produce performances on themes which have ranged from domestic violence to healthy eating," he said.
The next exciting project in the wings for the company is working with the Kala Chethena Kathakali Company from India, which combines amazing face painting and costumes with mime. It will be touring the UK in summer and holding a workshop with Out of the Darkness which Mr Sharp hopes will lead to members taking part in some of the rest of the performances during the tour, although funding is needs to cover travel and accommodation costs.
Jean Ramsay, whose daughter Lynn is a member of the company, is helping to organise the auction night and has been delighted by the response.
She said: "Kevin has already sent us a photograph of himself wearing the jacket and also a letter for the successful bidder telling them he wore it in 'Trainspotting' which is a film with a real cult following so hopefully there will be a lot of interest. We wrote to Shirley Bassey as we had heard she was very supportive of charities and by return post we received the glasses and she has signed the case."
Kevin has also donated a boxed set of DVDs from the 'Rome' TV series he appeared in and which has been signed by a number of the cast. There is also a signed Genesis CD and a number of signed photos of actors.
The auction at the Eight Acres Hotel will be conducted by John Birnie and will feature special bottles of whisky, luxury hampers, a stay at a Brora hotel, a flight in the RAF Kinloss simulator and a round of golf at Ballindalloch among the lots.
Tickets are £15 which includes a finger buffet and a glass of wine, and they are on sale from the office at the town hall.
The items being sold on EBay feature in the collectables category. They are marked with a ribbon to signify that proceeds are going to a charity and the seller is listed as the Out of the Darkness Theatre Company.
