Uh...wow. I didn't expect to like the whole episode as much as I did. One emotional moment to another. Kevin did a terrific job with material that ranged from the callous to the richly emotional. I find myself really starting to like alot of the characters that are not considered the 'popular' ones of the group. I don't read the GA fan boards so I'm sure all of them have their own followings but for the uninitiated like myself characters like Bailey, the cheif, Lexie and Alex were not the ones you would hear about when GA was the newest thing to hit the airwaves. Five years in I find them all very interesting. To a lesser extent Callie, Hahn and George. Sloan and Derek *rolls eyes* Anyway, this episode had a very serious tone to it, which is not something I've associated with GA in the past. As much as I liked the premiere I liked this more. People taking their work seriously and the silliness kept to a very low, and IMO, appropriate level. Alot of valid emotions expressed by Bailey, Izzy and Lexie IMO. As for Kevin....Oh how much do I love what they are doing with his character I was as shocked as the next viewer by the stabbing of the pigs. I expected no nonsense but when he pretended to not known Cristina and we waited the whole episode to hear the reason why??? Oy ve! Then the trauma where he kicked Sloan and Mark out and told Alex to make his own decisions. Oh loved that, in part because I think they are both full of themselves but that's another matter.... Having Owen come back later, be chastised by them and then turn around and ask them to help him learn was a direct connect back to what he told Cristina in the premiere. Mistakes are how you learn and he meant it for himself as much as for her. Kind of took the wind out of their sails too! The pigs: Okay I don't know how many people saw this the same way I did. I was raised on a farm. Animals are for eating. Also, I knew there was no way the pigs could easily heal up no matter how hard you tried to keep their environment clean. Add to that the obvious pain they would be in, which is something Izzy objected to from the outset. I was shocked at how Owen ordered them destroyed but not at all surprised. Finally the emotional scene following his order to euthanise the animals. I remember commenting on the boards that I thought Owen would have baggage. Also they had to explain how he completed his tour so quickly. I never expected that baggage to be dropped into Cristina's lap. I think he trusts her alot more than he wants to let on. Owen isn't the way he is by accident. I thought Kevin did a terrific job working opposite Sandra. Beautiful, touching scene. I hope we see more of that honesty between those characters. Some excellent television IMO.

I wrote a ton of spoilers under the tag Valerie. I know some people might be really bothered by the subject matter. I was watching the episode while talking to a friend and she was rather shaken by it all. I guess coming from a rural background helped me to accept the necessity of what has to happen. On the other hand, I can see Izzy's points as well. Watch the episode and draw your own conclusions. I have a good friend who lives in France and I've gotten to know a bit more about your culture through her. Maybe you might not see things the same way. I hope you will post and share your opinions.

I'm glad the episode was well received overall. It's hard to please everyone when people come from such varied backgrounds and life experiences. The spoiler you mentioned had alot of shock value to it but it also drove home points that are very important in terms of medical research. Everyone made valid arguments and that's a tricky thing to manage. Well done GA staff and well done Kevin for his part. The episode offered him a huge range of emotions to play and ideas to challenge on and off the set.

WOW By the time I got to see this episode I had read so much about it that the pig thing didn't actually have a big affect on me - I thought it was really well done considering they were plastic and fiberglass, it was a wonderfully successful special effect. I loved the Owen character his emotion when telling Christiana about what happened in his last tour was amazing true KMK form. I really enjoyed the episode it was clever and none of the couple stuff...nice and mature. A real winner. I look forward to the development of this character

That was an amazing episode for so many reasons. The breadth of Kevin's acting range was so well illustrated. I'm thrilled that they gave him so much to do. People are going off about the pigs. But they were a great vehicle to show Owen's tough military side and then his humane side. Also, the lives of the pigs was an excellent contrast to the greater importance of human life. That contrast gave insight to the viewer about how one could be emotionally devastated by witnessing loss of human life.

Doing some more song lyrics searches and found this - a couple of the verses have some great parallels to Owen's character on this episode.
Talking Heads - Life During Wartime Lyrics
Life During WartimeHeard of a van that is loaded with weapons, Packed up and ready to go Heard of some gravesites, out by the highway, A place where nobody knows The sound of gunfire, off in the distance, I’m getting used to it now Lived in a brownstore, lived in the ghetto, I’ve lived all over this town
This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco, This ain’t no fooling around No time for dancing, or lovey dovey, I ain’t got time for that now
Transmit the message, to the receiver, Hope for an answer some day I got three passports, a couple of visas, You don’t even know my real name High on a hillside, the trucks are loading, Everything’s ready to roll I sleep in the daytime, I work in the nightime, I might not ever get home
This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco, This ain’t no fooling around This ain’t no mudd club, or c. b. g. b., I ain’t got time for that now
Heard about houston? heard about detroit? Heard about pittsburgh, p. a.? You oughta know not to stand by the window Somebody might see you up there I got some groceries, some peant butter, To last a couple of days But I ain’t got no speakers, ain’t got no Heaphones, ain’t got no records to play
Why stay in college? why go to night school? Gonna be different this time Can’t write a letter, can’t send a postcard, I can’t write nothing at all This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco, This ain’t no fooling around I’d like to kiss you, I’d love you hold you I ain’t got no time for that now
Trouble in transit, got through the roadblock, We blended with the crowd We got computer, we’re tapping pohne lines, I know that ain’t allowed We dress like students, we dress like housewives, Or in a suit and a tie I changed my hairstyle, so many times now, I don’t know what I look like! You make me shiver, I feel so tender, We make a pretty good team Don’t get exhausted, I’ll do some driving, You ought to get some sleep Get you instructions, follow directions, Then you should change your address Maybe tomorrow, maybe the next day, Whatever you think is best Burned all my notebooks, what good are Notebooks? they won’t help me survive My chest is aching, burns like a furnace, The burning keeps me alive Try to stay healthy, physical fitness, Don’t want to catch no disease Try to be careful, don’t take no chances, You better watch what you say
