Kevin McKidd saved Grey’s Anatomy
I was just about to give up on Grey’s. I was tired of too many lackluster episodes, of Meredith whining, of hoping Derek would see the light, of Lexie being too cute, of George being too negative, of Alex being too damaged.
The only things that kept me hanging on were the occasional scenes where someone would tell someone else off — man, they write those scenes well on Grey’s — and the two or three episodes a season that hit it out of the park. That’s what I remember Grey’s being about, and it is discouraging we don’t get those every week anymore.
Enter Kevin McKidd … or should I say, Kevin McKidd bursts onto the scene, bigger than life, and saves the floundering series. How’d he do that?
* We have a new character to wonder about and discover his secrets. That alone gives us a reason to watch.
* A new love interest for Cristina? OK, I for one don’t really care about that so much, just that we get to see McKidd do his romantic lead thing. It’s better than watching poor McSteamy with his complete lack of storyline, or Derek and Merdith settling into the boring.
* Charisma. Somehow, the Grey’s writers have managed to denude Derek, Mark and Alex of any of their charisma. Derek used to melt the country when he’d look at Meredith in that certain way; McSteamy, well, was McSteamy. And Alex being a womanizing ass at least gave him some personality. Owen Hunt’s got some serious animal magnetism going for him.
* He isn’t all tough and gruff; he’s got some sensitive sides: he’s respectful, he’s shaking up the way medicine is practiced at Seattle grace, and that’s important.
Now, I am also really enjoying Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s appearances as Denny, but those are going to be pretty temporary, considering he’s dead and all. So let’s hope the writers at Grey’s Anatomy can keep peeling back the layers of Owen Hunt in an interesting way, and weave him seamlessly into the cast to bring out new aspects of their personalities too. We need a little life back in Grey’s, and so far, Kevin McKidd has brought us some, with a promise of much more.
