'Grey's Anatomy' music event: Sneak peeks and soundtrack release date on iTunes We're just as excited as you are about the upcoming "Grey's Anatomy" musical event. The episode will focus on some kind of crisis for Callie (Sara Ramirez) as she imagines the hospital and her friends in unexpected (and obviously musical) ways. It sounds outside the box for the show, but we know the cast has an amazing amount of talented singers on it and "Private Practice's" Kate Walsh (Addison) returns for the episode. Plus, creator Shonda Rhimes wrote the script herself! "This is not jumping the shark, it's not a trick, it's not a gimmick," Jesse Williams, who plays Jackson, tells Zap2it. "It's totally in line with this season and these characters. And it's just incredibly moving." Also, ABC just announced that iTunes will have a sneak peek at the musical event's soundtrack on Tuesday, March 29. The full "Grey's Anatomy: The Music Event" soundtrack featuring the cast, including songs by Ramirez, a Tony Award winner for Broadway's "Spamalot," Kevin McKidd (Owen), Chandra Wilson (Bailey), and Chyler Leigh (Lexie) will be available on Thursday, March 31 - the same day the episode airs on ABC. Don't forget to keep an eye on ABC's Music Lounge in the days approaching the episode as the network promises exclusive video from the music event. blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2011/03/greys-anatomy-music-event-news-sneak-peeks-and-soundtrack-release-date-on-itunes.html

GREY'S ANATOMY Spoiler Alert: Which Married Couple Appears to Be Headed For Divorce? GREY'S ANATOMY Spoiler Alert: Which Married Couple Appears to Be Headed For Divorce? www.tvline.com/2011/03/pilot-scoop-scott-foley-to-play-doctor-for-cbs/This is going to put a serious crimp in Teddy and Henry’s “marriage” on Grey’s Anatomy: Scott Foley is set to play Christine Lahti’s son in the CBS drama pilot The Doctor. Foley — who is currently recurring as Kim Raver’s spouse of convenience on the ABC hit — will costar on Doctor as David, a cocky cardiologist and the son of Lahti’s lead character. Doctor, written by Everwood/Privileged vet Rina Mimoun, centers on a mother (Lahti) who reconnects with her adult children when she joins the family medical practice. Also joining the cast is The Good Wife‘s Michael Boatman. He’ll play the Chief of Staff and a mentor to Lahti’s character.

Call it the seven-year itch, or perhaps a by-product of the “Glee” effect, but the producers behind ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” — now in its seventh season — are hoping a musical episode airing March 31 might generate renewed interest in the medical drama. Although the idea by show creator/exec producer Shonda Rhimes pre-dated “Glee,” one can’t help but assume Fox’s hit jukebox series, which has spawned concert tours and whose cast sold more than 3.6 million albums last year, might have provided the inspiration to finally go forward with the concept. “I’ve been thinking about doing a musical episode since we made the pilot,” Rhimes says. “I love musical episodes but it never seemed to be the right time to make it until now.” Dawn Soler, senior VP of TV music at ABC Entertainment Group, says the material was culled from “iconic songs of the past seasons.” And while the selections were narrowed down by Rhimes, the material can also be largely credited to music supervisor Alexandra Patsavis, whose indie pop sensibility has helped make shows like “Grey’s” and “Gossip Girl” the gold standard for music placement. “Someone (from ‘Grey’s’ production team) said to me, ‘we make music videos and string them together to make a show, which I thought was an interesting perspective,” says the episode’s musical director Chris Horvath. To this end, the songs being used in the episode, “motor the storyline,” according to Soler. “There’s not going to be a moment where you stop and have a song that isn’t driving the story,” she says. “It’s really integral and beautifully woven.” Producers are tight-lipped about the plot, but Horvath reveals “there is a kind of altered-consciousness” aspect to the episode, which is titled “Song Beneath the Song,” Horvath adds that “it’s told from the perspective of one of the characters. The music really happens in a space between life and death.” The series, which has had its share of behind-the-scenes drama, has been accused of jumping the shark more than once over its seven-year run, with gun-wielding lunatics, bomb scares, out-of-body experiences and all manner of sexual couplings occurring among its cast members. The musical concept, however, is not without precedent: “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” aired a musical episode called “Once More With Feeling,” written and directed by the show’s creator Joss Whedon, in 2001, while “Scrubs” featured “My Musical” in 2007. Those events occurred late in their runs, during both shows’ sixth seasons, when the series were considered past their peaks. “Buffy’s” musical actually resulted in a slightly lower rating than the previous show; while the “Scrubs” tuner averaged 6.5 million viewers, up slightly from the 6.1 million average of the episodes that bookended it. “Ratings don’t drive the creative on my shows,” assures Rhimes. “So I didn’t consider that as part of my reason for doing the music event. I did it because it was fun and it was a challenge and (cast member) Sara Ramirez exists.” The “Grey’s” music episode has been seriously in the works since October, but the process wasn’t easy. Rhimes had to convince network execs and leery cast members with a formal pitch. “She got the (original) artists to come sing the songs,” recalls Soler. “Then the actors sang some of the songs and it was like, ‘wow, how could we not do this?’ ” For some, like Ramirez, the singing was natural; she won a Tony for “Spamalot”; Of Scottish player Kevin McKidd, Horvath says “I would start a band with him tomorrow”; and Chandra Wilson, who began performing in musicals at age five, “has a beautiful, gospel-tinged voice,” according to Horvath, “Then there were people who literally had never even sung in the bathroom,” says Horvath, “and we got them to the best of there abilities with a little nipping and tucking.” Songs include “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol, “How to Save a Life” by the Fray, “The Story” by Brandi Carlile, and “How We Operate” by Gomez. In each situation, the song’s placement in the show either helped break the artists behind it, further boost their popularity and/or spike sales of the single or album from which it was culled. “We’ve been given stats from anywhere from 100% to 1000% uptick in an artist on both their My Space and Facebook and iTunes accounts depending on the use,” says Soler. A digital soundtrack from the episode will be released on iTunes April 5. Past “Gray’s” compilations — which have ranged in sales from 35,000 units to 413,000 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan — have been released through Disney’s Hollywood Records. An upcoming “Grey’s” collection will be released in July through Patsavas’ label, Chop Shop. The event will be heavily promoted on the net’s website Music Lounge, with all manner of behind-the-scenes and “making of” segments, with a tie-in to Facebook, while sneak peeks have already started airing on another medical show, “Off the Map,” also exec produced by Rhimes, beginning March 2. But whether one is a longtime fan of the show or a recent convert, Horvath warns viewers not to tune in March 31 cold. “Anyone who wants to watch this episode and enjoy it really needs to watch the one before it,” he says, “because there’s a lead-in that’s dramatic. And for fans of the show who are invested in the characters, there’s really going to be an ‘Oh my God!’ moment.” www.variety.com/article/VR1118033782?refcatid=14&printerfriendly=true

Grey’s Anatomy has cast actress Gina Gallego to play the mother of Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez). The soap opera veteran will debut May 5 as Lucia Torres, the wife of Callie’s father, Carlos (Hector Elizondo), who will also appear in the episode. Gina, 55, is known to daytime audiences for her recurring roles on numerous daytime soap operas. Her credits include Santa Barbara, The Bold and the Beautiful and, most recently, Days of Our Lives, where she played a prison warden. Lucia and Carlos are coming to Seattle at the same time Callie’s girlfriend, Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), welcomes her parents, Barbara (Judith Ivey) and Colonel Robbins (Denis Arndt), fueling speculation that a wedding might soon be taking place. Don’t miss the coming episodes of Grey’s, which I guarantee will take Calzona on a roller coaster ride of epic proportions. www.tvguide.com/News/Kecks-Exclusives-Greys-1030642.aspx

Chelsjo: Grey's! Grey's! Meredith and Derek in particular! Please! If you're hoping for a flashy Mer-Der duet in the musical episode, don't hold your breath. "I don't do too much, thank goodness," Patrick Dempsey tells us. "I'm supporting all the singers, but Sara Ramirez is really wonderful, and Kevin [McKidd] and the rest of the cast. Everyone pretty much sings at the moment and a lot of the songs are [ones] that made the show famous, which is really a nice touch I think, and very emotional." Marianamesq: GREY'S! Well, since you wrote it in all capital letters, we have to give you scoop, right? Jesse Williams tells us he's "not really going to be singing," although he might be "part of a five or six part harmony." But that doesn't mean he's not all pumped up to see the finished product. "I'm really excited and I'm not generally a fan of musicals…but this one is really, really moving and it's not song and dance," Jesse says. "It's got nothing to do with Glee. It's very much still anchored in the tradition of what Grey's Anatomy does with drama." www.eonline.com/uberblog/watch_with_kristin/b230929_spoiler_chat_get_ready_glee_death.html#ixzz1Gd4gfsoj

Mega Buzz on Grey's from wtlfan Any chance Lucy and Alex will hook up on Grey's Anatomy? — Brandy NATALIE: Even though Rachael Taylor left to shoot the Charlie's Angels pilot, you should still expect some smooching for the next few weeks. Lucy Fields is no random hookup either, says Justin Chambers. "Alex still doesn't wear his heart on his sleeve," the actor says. "I'm feeling that he's really smitten with this new girl, and I don't think he's been smitten with anyone for a while wtlfan.livejournal.com/

From TWOP Calzona - They WILL get married this season. She even repeated the whole "MFEO" and said she doesn't understand why people are stressing. (ummmm Maybe because they don't SEEM like they are MFEO despite her constant assurances, but I digress...) She didn't say there would be a "wedding" per se, but she did say that they were going to deal with the issue of it not being legal "in an interesting way". A fan was allowed to ask Sara a question and asked what she could reveal about the fact that Callie and Arizona's parents would soon be on the show. Sara looked over at Shonda who quickly yelled "Nothing!" so not much info there, but it does make sense that they are there for the marriage. Nothing was said in regards to the baby, but Shonda did say that Meredith's struggle was going to have to do with seeing people around her getting what she wants, i.e. "having and raising babies" so read into that what you may... Lexie/Jackson - Shonda likes them together and thinks they make a sexy couple. She said Lexie doesn't think of Jackson as just a rebound but that the story doesn't necessarily end there... Owen/Christina/Teddy - Shonda said that the whole PTSD has made Christina a better doctor than ever. The upcoming conflict is going to have to do with, "what happens when the student surpasses the teacher" and how that will affect not only Owen but Teddy as well. Finale - Shonda said that she is not going to do an "explosive" finale like she has done the last two seasons. There won't necessarily be any outside forces. She basically just wants to show the characters and how far they have come and how much they have grown. That's basically it...there are things I know I missed because Sara is loud and, well, distracting Her performances (she sang the song twice) were amazing and her interview with Mario Lopez was super cute as well. forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=3132277&view=findpost&p=13750675

Grey's Anatomy Twist: Teddy Gets a Proposal Grey’s Anatomy‘s Teddy aka the Cardiac God will find herself juggling a few hearts — and ultimately a very big decision — when James Tupper resurfaces as Dr. Andrew Perkins, the crisis counselor who last fall helped the Seattle Gracers recover from the hospital shooting. Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on Glee, Grey’s and More “He’s a bit nomadic — he’s traveling — and he’s back in town when he contacts her,” Tupper tells us of Andrew’s springtime return. The psychiatrist apparently “contacts” Teddy (played by Kim Raver) right off her feet, because before you know it, they’re picking things up where they left off at the end of Tupper’s original run. “They liked each other before, so they’re trying it again,” says the actor. Well, yeah… except Teddy is now technically married to Henry (played by Scott Foley). Oh, that’s right — Andrew is kept in the dark about that pesky detail. “Yeah, she hasn’t told me about that,” Tupper shares. Regardless — or more likely because of Teddy’s omission — things progress to the point that, by the end of the season, Andrew will drop a big question in her lap. “I do make her a proposal,” Tupper teases. But is it an offer Teddy can’t refuse? “I’m waiting to see just like you are,” says Tupper, “but I think there’s a chemistry there.” ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy returns with fresh episodes on Thursday, March 24. From TVLine No Dark Grey’s Finale | Kevin McKidd says that Grey’s Anatomy’s upcoming season-ender won’t be nearly as grim as last May’s blood-soaked finale. “There’s not going to be some massive event, like a shooting,” he tells TVLine, “but there’s definitely going to be a lot of things that come to light that are going to change a lot of perceptions and pose a lot of very difficult questions for people. It’s going to leave big question marks, [because] quite serious kind of things happen in the last couple of episodes that are left unresolved.” Might Owen and Christina be among those left in flux, since they’ve been at odds about when to start a family? Per McKidd, Owen needs Christina “to realize that maybe there’s more to life than just work. And that is going to play out in a very interesting way towards the end of the season.” Please go post comments www.tvline.com/2011/03/matts-inside-line-scoop-greys-anatomy-house/#comment-54270

mahrayan: Grey's scoop! If you're holding your breath waiting for a Mark-Lexie reunion, you might want to exhale sooner rather than later. Mark Sloan finds out this week that Lexie and Jackson are having a thing. We just talked to Chyler Leigh and asked her if she thought Mark and Lexie were soulmates (a la Meredith and Derek), and she told us, "I think it's still yet to be determined, to be honest. With her and Jackson there's something that's just really refreshing and young in their relationship. There's something to be said for people who are at the same place and want the same things. At the same time she still loves Mark. A few episodes ago she said, 'I love you' to him, and that's the first time she ever said that to him. And I don't think it was just 'I love you because you helped me get through this really hard day.' It was genuine. I think she does absolutely still love Mark, and I think that's really what is going to be the struggle and what's really going to be hard for her is to see if despite all the differences, they actually can make it work. She’s got some talented co-stars. “There were a lot of really beautiful voices. I’ve heard Kevin McKidd sing a little bit before and he’s such a rock star. It literally brings me to tears when Sara Ramirez sings. She’s unbelievable. And then Chandra Wilson has a soulful, nurturing voice. And Kim Raver has such a cool voice. She sounds a little bit like Natalie Merchant. There were a lot of really good singers. I’m not sure that anybody was expecting that.” read the full interview with Chyler www.parade.com/celebrity/celebrity-parade/2011/03/chyler-leigh-greys-anatomy-music-event.html

From TV Guide - Natalie: Where's the Grey's Anatomy scoop on Cristina and Owen? — Dina NATALIE: Right here! Tensions for the couple will continue as we head toward the finale. "I don't think the end of the season is going to be easy for any of our fans, but I think it's going to be pretty explosive for [the Cristina-Owen ones]," executive producer Shonda Rhimes says. And for Cristina and Teddy. Look for a serious student-teacher face-off during the musical episode. www.tvguide.com/News/MegaBuzz-NCIS-Greys-1030999.aspx

'Grey's Anatomy' scoop: Chyler Leigh says Mark and Lexie 'still love each other' Is Little Gray’s fling with Dr. Jackson Avery over before it really gets going? Well, if you remember the steamy shower scene where we last saw Lexie (Chyler Leigh) and Jackson (Jesse Williams), you know we needn’t worry about that. It’s on. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a huge helping of awkward in the cards for the pair when Grey’s Anatomy returns for new episodes this Thursday. “A few weeks have gone by, and in this episode coming up this Thursday, you see more of a development between Lexie and Jackson,” Leigh dishes. ”Lexie is able to kind of just enjoy herself, and it’s refreshing — very ‘no strings attached.’ But [when] Mark starts to find out what happens, he doesn’t necessarily react so well.” Sure, Mark has had his share of side dishes — um, he is going to be a father again soon, after all — but the difference, says Leigh, is that Lexie might have more than a fling on her hands. “We definitely see that [Lexie and Jackson have] spent time together,” she says. “They’re in the same place in their lives. They want the same thing. So what starts out as something that seems kind of a bit flingy, turns into a bit of a relationship. Nobody is dropping the ‘L word’ or anything, but you start to see a little bit more of a development and potential that something could really happen there.” In a perfect situation, however (see: no affairs with lesbians, no unplanned pregnancies, etc.), Leigh believes Mark and Lexie were meant to be. “When it comes down to it, and when you strip everything else away, Mark and Lexie still love each other,” she says. “[But] that’s not where she is. So it is definitely a difficult situation between Lexie and Mark.” Consider us torn, readers. insidetv.ew.com/2011/03/22/greys-anatomy-mark-lexie/

Question: I am loving Lexie and Avery on Grey’s Anatomy. Any chance Lexie will stick with him (the hot, age-appropriate doc) over Mark (the guy old enough to be her dad)? —Shari Ausiello: I can tell you that there’s a bit of a time jump in the early part of May sweeps, and when the action picks up, they’re still an item. In the meantime, we’ll find out in next week’s musical episode how Mark feels about his ex playing doctor with McPrettyEyes. “Callie mentions that he is devastated by it,” reveals Chyler Leigh. “We don’t really see much interaction between Mark and Lexie in the next couple of episodes. I’m sure it will come to a head [the next time] they’re in the same room together for more than a few minutes.” Question: I’m enjoying the April-Stark dynamic on Grey’s. Anything coming up? —Katie Ausiello: According to April’s portrayer, Sarah Drew, the “April-Stark [Peter MacNicol] situation takes some fun, interesting twists and turns… In an [upcoming] episode, you see her stand up for herself in a pretty awesome way. It’s cool to see [April] come into her own and not be such a nervous Nellie about everything.” www.tvline.com/2011/03/ask-ausiello-spoilers-greys-anatomy-glee-smallville/

Grey's Anatomy Relationship Roundup: What's Next for the Couples of Seattle Grace? It's been nearly a month since the doctors of Grey's Anatomy have graced our television screens. With so many relationships left in the air — Cristina and Owen's disagreements about the future, Stark asking April out, Jackson and Lexie hooking up — TVGuide.com has compiled a handy breakdown to catch you up on where each couple stands and what's next for them. Meredith and Derek (Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey): The pair has been grappling with infertility issues, which will come to a head in the musical episode. "It's starting to be a really sore point," executive producer Shonda Rhimes says. "Part of this episode is about really bringing up how painful it is for Meredith to be watching other people get pregnant, have babies and deal with that other stuff. We've been using the clinical trial for a while and that's going to launch into a very big story about them as we head towards the end of the season." Don't fret though. We're hearing it may be good news. Cristina and Owen (Sandra Oh and Kevin McKidd): While Meredith has been hoping to get pregnant, Cristina revealed to Owen that getting knocked up is not part of her life plan. "It's almost like they didn't quite check in on certain fundamental issues before they tied the knot," McKidd says. "So, a lot of that's going to come back and haunt them." Adds Rhimes: "I don't think the end of the season is going to be easy for any of our fans, but I think it's going to be pretty explosive for [the Cristina-Owen ones]." Callie and Arizona (Sara Ramirez and Jessica Capshaw): As Arizona struggles to find her place in the tri-parenting arrangement, she and Callie will go away for the weekend, which will lead to a turning point for Callie to figure out "why her life with Arizona is worth fighting for, if that's the case," Ramirez says. "She loves them both in different ways." Rhimes adds that she has always believed the women are "MFEO... made for each other," she says. "All of the issues that fans have been feeling — that we've been feeling — about the fact that this is not Arizona's dream to have a baby with Mark Sloan, and this is not necessarily the way that she wanted any of this to happen, is going to come to a head and be a big part of the [musical episode]." Mark, Lexie and Jackson (Eric Dane, Chyler Leigh and Jesse Williams): Following the announcement that Callie was pregnant with Mark's baby, Lexie found a new love interest in Jackson, whom she shared a steamy shower session with in the last episode. "It's going to upset him that she's going out with somebody else who's handsome," Dane says. While Leigh believes Lexie does still love Mark, she doesn't think Jackson is a rebound. "She can confide in him and she can talk with him," she says. "There's something refreshing about it that it's someone who is in the same place as she is, just trying to make it as a doctor. It's definitely something that has the potential to blossom into something pretty big." April and Stark (Sarah Drew and Peter MacNicol): When Grey's returns, the series will have jumped ahead, so April and Stark, who asked her out in the last new episode, have actually been on a few dates now. "I think she's really enjoying having some sort of companionship," Drew says. "She truly does like him and she sees something in him that he hasn't allowed anyone else to see. But you'll see that things go awry because it's not a physical relationship and then we realize he feels much more deeply for her than she does for him." And in case you're wondering, yes, April is still a virgin. "She's not losing her virginity for awhile," she says, but adds that when it does happen, "The [writers] promised me that it will be beautiful." Alex and Lucy (Justin Chambers and Rachael Taylor): Even though Taylor left to shoot the Charlie's Angels pilot, we hear the pair will share a smooch before she exits. "Justin seems very kissable to me, so I would be very happy to be one of the many women that his character has been with on the show," Taylor says. Lucy Fields is no random hookup either, says Chambers. "Alex still doesn't wear his heart on his sleeve," the actor says. "I'm feeling that he's really smitten with this new girl, and I don't think he's been smitten with anyone for a while." Bailey and Eli (Chandra Wilson and Daniel Sunjata): Following a hot on-call room tryst between the new lovers, the pair will be singing with the other couples during the musical episode. "This whole season, it's been about getting on with it so that we weren't just mourning after the shooting," Wilson says. "So, she let herself begin to try some new things. That's not necessarily the 'new Bailey' but it was just enough mourning. I don't even think she's in a place where she's calling it a relationship." Nothing really new here: www.tvline.com/2011/03/greys-anatomy-preview-chyler-leigh/ For Grey's Anatomy's Lexie, Things Get 'Steamy' and 'Awkward' With the Men In Her Life Matt Webb Mitovich This Thursday on Grey’s Anatomy (ABC, 9/8c), Lexie rides quite the emotional roller-coaster, enjoying a hot hook-up with one fella before getting served a chilly helping of “uncomfortable” courtesy of another. First (and frothy) things first: Chyler Leigh tells TVLine that the opening scene of this week’s Grey’s, featuring Lexie and Jackson, is “a bit steamy.” She is quick to clarify that is is “not, like, literally steamy — it’s not a shower scene again! — but it involves other equipment.” Steamy? Other equipment? What the what? Leigh offered no further details, only teasing, “You’ll see….” Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on Grey’s, Smallville, Glee and More Dissecting the dynamic between Lexie and Jackson, Leigh says, “I think they support each other, they care about each other and it’s easy for one another to talk to each other about whatever they need or whatever want — things like that.” “They’re both in the same place in their lives, and they also have the physical attraction to one another, so…. It’s Grey’s Anatomy, so they want sex,” she adds with a smile. “You will see us interacting a lot.” Matt’s Inside Line: Scoop on Grey’s, Castle and More Interactions between Lexie and Mark, meanwhile, have been few and far between, largely because of the plenty complicated baby drama he’s got going with Callie and Arizona — a twist that did the always-fragile “Mexie” relationship no favors. “Lexie got pretty rocked by the whole thing,” Leigh says of Mark’s latest baby daddy status, which came not so long after his grown daughter Sloan hit Seattle. “It was a breaking point for her, so her involvement [with all of that] so far hasn’t been too much.” Yet in this week’s episode, a baby shower thrown for Callie sets the scene for Lexie and Mark to cross paths, and the chill in the air could revisit winter upon Seattle. “There’s a run in between [them] that’s a bit awkward,” Leigh previews. “It’s one of those moments.” So are things thus finished, done, finito with Lexie and Mark? Will they continue to ignore the elephant in the room rather than talk about what happened? By season’s end, Leigh reckons, “Something will have to come to a head. I am sure something will come up where they’ll be at least in the same room together for more than a few minutes.” Grey’s Anatomy Triangle Twist: Teddy Gets a Proposal! In the meantime, Lexie and Jackson will continue to sing a happy tune (or at least make beautiful music together), especially when Grey’s serves up its “musical” episode on March 31. “I’m singing ‘Breathe (2 AM)’ by Anna Nalick, and Sarah Drew (April) and I do the chorus on a song called ‘Grace,’” Leigh shares. “And In ‘Walking On Sunshine,’ by Jesus Jackson, I do a part in there.” And might Lexie be singing to Jackson in any of the scenes…? “I can’t say,” Leigh non-answers. “But there are other people involved, definitely.” (With reporting by Vlada Gelman)
