Zoanne Clack on "I Will Survive"...
Original Airdate: 5-12-11
Doh! What is Alex doing? Mer is his trusted friend, his confidante… she’s his landlord for godssakes! You don’t just, well, tell on her! But that’s exactly what he does. He’s tired of women tromping all over him, tired of always getting leftovers (wasn’t sure if tromping was really a word but I looked it up and it is). He’s gonna take what’s his for a change. Let’s go through his relationships, shall we? When we first met him, he was a total jerk to Mer. Despite that, despite being foul, she let him in to her inner sanctum, sometimes admitting things to him that she wouldn’t admit to most people. And he returned the favor. It is/was a true friendship, without the turmoil of love and physical wanting invading it. So let’s move on from that one. There was Nurse Olivia, and there was syphilis… wait, those were one in the same. Then there was Izzie who was kind of the love of his life. The first time their relationship fizzled because he took a backseat to Denny, a freakin’ dying patient. And even then he was there to pick up the pieces for her. The second time he actually married her, kind of hastily, but he would’ve done anything for her. He’d opened his heart to her. This time, she was the freakin’ dying patient. And what happened? She left him. She, the dying one, left him, the strong one. The man who was in love with her. And would’ve done whatever needed to be done to keep her safe and comfortable. But she left him anyway. Boom. Another one bites the dust. And in between? Jane Doe/Ava/Rebecca? Remember her? All bashed up from the wreckage, Alex gave her an identity, gave her hope, gave himself hope, only to realize she had a husband underneath it all, and she picked her old life. He opened his heart to her again when she came back, but no matter how much love he gave her, it could not prevail over he mental illness. He had to let go. The constant heartache has got to gnaw on a person. And this time? This time Lucy dealt the backbreaker. He was vulnerable and open with yet another woman and he got the rug pulled from beneath his feet. Open heart? Meet foot. He can’t just sit around and let his potential chances get ruined. Yes he loves Meredith Grey as a friend, truly and deeply. But is he going to let his heart prevail this time? Is he going to risk keeping it open by keeping her secret only for it to be stomped on yet again and potentially miss getting Chief Resident because of it? In his head, he’s yelling at Meredith, he’s getting what’s due him, he’s not going down without a fight. In his head. But then there was the drinking. And the defenses went down. And the inhibitions were released. Along with the filters. The things in his head came out through his mouth and… oops. What just happened?
What happened was people got their feelings hurt. Over and over in this episode. Henry for instance. I happen to love little Henry. And his love for Teddy. He spent the whole episode trying to be a better man, trying to be someone worthy of her love, only to get his little heart stepped on at the end. But like a man, he stepped up to the plate, didn’t whine to get her back or pout, just asked for a divorce instead of a relationship. I think it might’ve been the saddest moment of the show for me, when Teddy walked away and stood there, unable to watch her go.
It’s almost more sad than Jackson nobly stepping off the Chief’s study to make sure the clinical trial had a chance to be considered for a Harper-Avery. He realized there would be a conflict of interest if he stayed on, he couldn’t let that happen. This is a chance for real groundbreaking research to be recognized, and Jackson wasn’t going to stand in the way. And besides, he’s got Lexie to fill the void… right?
And Mer/Der? They’ve got Baby Zola to fill their void. They’ve been struggling and struggling to have a baby but so far? Nothing. Then there’s this orphan. This adorable, sweet, beautiful little orphan. Mer’s scared, and deep inside Der is, too, but they’re willing to forego their doubts to give this baby a home. And if anyone read Shonda’s blog on the musical, you’ll know that Patrick Dempsey is the McDreamy BabyWhisperer. Couldn’t have been truer. It was so hard to get scenes with that baby crying because she was just a happy, happy baby (they’re twins actually, and they were both very, very happy – all the time), but when PDemp aka Derek Shepherd aka McDreamy was on the scene, fuhgetaboudit. Smiling, happy, laughing baby is what we got. Not that we’re complaining.
I think my favorite part of the episode was Callie sniffing Sofia’s little head and wanting to eat Sofia’s little foot before she gave her up to go work. Couldn’t have been cuter.
I guess I should also say, Welcome Back, Cristina Yang. She was Cristina with a vengeance today, wouldn’t you say? She took charge and made things happen, but I’m pretty proud of April for standing up to her – over and over. She’s coming into her own also. Good for her.
And just a little medical note since I’m the doc on board: yes, abdominal pregnancies can happen. Extremely, extremely rare, but not impossible. And yes, they can go undetected, even with an ultrasound. And the tree? Real case from Russia. It may have happened only once that we can find (with a tree), but it happened in Russia, and it happened at Seattle Grace. So technically, that’s twice, right? And sickle cell was the motivation for the theme of adaptation. I find it fascinating that Sickle Cell trait developed as an adaptation to protect people from malaria. You can follow maps of malaria and maps of Sickle Cell and they fall together perfectly. We know what gene mutated, how it adapted, what it does, yet we are still working hard to make it stop. Having the trait can help, but having the disease can be deadly. They’re working hard to make it a thing of the past though.
Okay, had to do just a little medical. It’s out of my system.

One note - this writer (and doctor) also wrote the episode in which we got Cristina as a drunk bartender.

www.eonline.com/uberblog/watch_with_kristin/b241608_greys_anatomy_redux_betrayal.htmlGrey's Anatomy Redux: Betrayal and Backstabbing Reign in Race for Chief Resident Today 8:30 PM PDT by Christina Dowling This week, everyone was in hot competition: for babies, for jobs, for love and of course for the title of Chief Resident. It's almost exactly like a gladiator arena, but Grey's Anatomy doesn't employ lions, they have something even worse: crazy ambitious surgeons. Which doc stumbled? Who triumphed? And what couple is one step closer to bringing home baby? WHAT WE LEARNED: Dr. Mommy: We've seen Derek (Patrick Dempsey) coo over the adorable African orphan baby, but this week was Meredith's (Ellen Pompeo) turn to stretch her mommy muscles. In her own words, she was raised by a mother who was, "as nurturing as a steak knife," so maybe that's not the best example for fine parenting. However, Meredith brings it in the interview and proves you can be a surgeon and a concerned mom. Clearly Ellis just sucked at multitasking. And here we continue our begging: Please, please can MerDer get this baby? Lady Bait: Come on gals, admit it. There is something about a cute guy with a baby (or puppy) that makes our ovaries inexplicably ache. Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) didn't do a lot of doctoring this week but he carried around baby Sofia like a champ. Added bonus: Lexie (Chyler Leigh) is loving this softer side of Sloan. Sofia is a lot better behaved that his other daughter, and when he told Lexie, "I have everything I always wanted...almost." Well, we just melted. Perfectly perfect. Honestly, we do feel badly about Avery's (Jesse Williams) inevitable broken heart. But we're sure someone will take one for the team and be there to comfort him. And we're available. Just sayin'. Greys Anatomy, Sandra Oh Randy Holmes/ABC Stealing Hearts and Jobs: Alex (Justin Chambers) really does have the worst luck in women. Just when you think the poor guy is making the right decision to take a chance on love with Lucy (Rachael Taylor)...Boom. She becomes a job-stealing hussy. We guess since Meredith is all happily post-it and legally hitched, there needed to be a new commitment-phobic lady doc in town. Another job stolen. Pesky Nepotism: Being Harper Avery's grandson is really cramping Dr. Pretty Eyes' chances at Chief Resident. But he's so noble. And so pretty. At least there was one doctor this episode who was willing to fall on his or her sword rather than stab someone in the back. He bows out of the trial to give the Chief a chance at the prestigious award. OK, that earns him a couple points for Team Avery. Conifer Heart: Sounds like a bad indie rock song, right? But can we just take a moment to thank the medical researchers over at Grey's for yet another bizarre ailment that we'll be convinced we contracted. Yes, we need to get help for our hypochondria, but we're still never going camping again. Cristina (Sandra Oh) really saves the day and shows yet again why she is a billion times more awesome than Teddy. Maybe she won't be winning the Chief Resident title, but we think she should at least get a cardio goddess tiara. Just a small one, something tasteful. WHAT LIES AHEAD: All the Single Ladies? It's hard to top a bloody two-hour hospital massacre, so how will Shonda Rhimes bring it this finale? With a knife straight to our hearts, it seems. Meredith's clinical trial deception threatens to cost her a job and perhaps husband in next week's emotional season ender. Triangles Are Complicated: Lexie's longing looks at Mark and Avery's frequent interruptions aren't by happenstance. It's about that time again for a predictable Lexie-Mark involved triangle blowout. But who will prevail this time? Hopefully some ground is gained in next week's season finale. That girl needs to choose one way or another, and we think Sofia could do with three mommies. Why not? Bun in the Oven: We're not usually ones to be gobsmacked by a notoriously perplexing promo department, but Cristina saying she's preggo makes us pause. Or scream. Cristina being antibaby and Owen wanting a kid might spell finale doom for this once-happy couple. Not Dead and Buried: We can only hope that Meredith's meddling hasn't completely derailed the Alzheimer's clinical trial. But we do know Adele Webber (Loretta Devine) is still alive or alive enough to come back for at least one episode next season. So Grey's fans, is Cristina better off as an awesome surgeon/cardio god? Will baby Sofia be enough to bring Lexie to the dark side? And just how excited are you for next week's season finale? Head on down to the comments and fire away!

With Grey’s Anatomy slipping 9 percent to an all-time low demo rating of 3.2, Fox’s Bones for the first time ever bested a fresh episode of the ABC medical drama in the coveted 18-49 demo, by holding steady with a 3.3. And by matching its week-ago audience of 11 million viewers, Bones topped Grey’s (9.4 mil, down 5 percent week-to-week) in that measure, as well. www.tvline.com/2011/05/ratings-bones-greys-anatomy-vampire-diaries/

Grey's Anatomy Review: "I Will Survive" May 13th, 2011 5:38 AM by Christina Tran Don’t you love Thursday nights?! I’m biting my bottom lip now trying to simply review last night’s absolutely incredible episode, "I Will Survive," and desperately trying not to comment just yet on the previews for next week’s Grey's Anatomy season finale. Honestly, I can't wait to see the repercussions from yet another strong installment. Now, let’s talk about the perfectly delivered, emotionally-packed performance by our favorite doctors. First off, I really liked the fact that Calzona was not the main focus this week. Without them in the limelight, we were able to see the competition for chief resident at its best. Not surprisingly, Alex told on Meredith about her messing with the Alzheimer’s trial. I just knew he would though. I doubt that Meredith will lose her job or McDreamy, but she will certainly be facing severe consequences. Rightfully so, though. Then again, let’s not forget about what Izzie did and how she was only put on probation. While I found it slightly annoying that Cristina didn’t follow protocol and tried to hijack a patient without even trying to talk to Teddy, I appreciated the new friendship between both April and Cristina. It made complete sense when April explained that she always follows protocols because of the incident when she was fired for killing a patient due to missing a simple step. April’s grown on me over this past season, but I still don’t want her to be chief resident. I can truthfully say that I have no idea who should be chosen now. Moreover, Owen was right. Cristina isn’t meant to be chief resident. She’s meant to be a surgeon. As for Alex, I was happy to see that Lucy was back. However, it was unfortunate that it took him too long to realize just maybe his career shouldn’t come before a shot at love. I can’t say that I saw it coming that she would be the one to take the clinic job in Africa. I, for one, liked Lucy and Alex together. With her out of the picture and his betrayal to Meredith, I wonder how Alex will react. Will what he did to Meredith affect their friendship? While Avery backed out of Chief Webber’s diabetes study for noble reasons, I realized that I almost forgot that he was a surgeon. After all, we haven’t seen him in the OR lately. I found it a little strange that Callie was back to work already, but it’s great to see her happy with her “crack baby”. Plus, how amazing was Mark with baby Sophia? As a Mark and Lexie fan, I loved all of their scenes together. Their chemistry is undeniable, and they just need to be together. Although there are so many issues for these two, it was completely obvious how much they missed and needed each other. I also loved the MerDer and Zola scenes. As expected, Meredith was nervous about her interview with the social worker. I certainly liked how she admitted she didn’t know much about being a good mother, but she was willing to do whatever it takes to be a good mom. I’m wistfully hoping that Derek forgives her for jeopardizing the Alzheimer’s trial sooner than later, and that things work out for them with baby Zola. Meanwhile, I can’t say that I’ve been fully invested in Teddy and Andrew Perkins or even Henry, but I do wonder if Teddy will really move to Germany. Overall, I thought this was an excellent episode and am especially excited about the upcoming season finale. What did you think of “I Will Survive”? 'Grey's Anatomy' Fan Columnist: Secrets and Lies Whoa! Grey's Anatomy has done it again. Just like last year the penultimate episode was chock full of incredible developments, setting the stage for an epic season finale. Let's review where things stand before pondering the promo for next week. Ambition and Ambiguity GA creator Shonda Rhimes has said that the season finale will focus on Meredith, Cristina, and Alex. Tonight's installment, "I Will Survive", got things rolling as the lines between personal relationships and professional aspirations began to blur. Meredith was ostensibly still in the race for chief resident, but I found it telling that on final interview day, she was much more concerned with trying to adopt baby Zola. Who would have thought we'd see the day when Meredith Grey wanted to be a mommy? Yet there she was ... bonding with the baby while simultaneously confronting her darkest fears about her stormy childhood and anxieties about being a mom. Despite her worries that she would fail her interview with the adoption agency and would have no idea how to be a parent, she really rose to the occasion. I get the very strong impression that Meredith is going to be pleasantly surprised by how well she takes to this motherhood thing. Then we had Cristina who, shut out of surgery for too long, went rogue and performed a tricky operation on a patient who had a tree growing in his lung. The procedure went well but the consequences were grave as both the Chief and Dr. Altman were none-too-pleased with the ambitious Dr. Yang. It fell to Owen to tell Cristina the hard truth: she's not going to be chief resident. I loved this scene, though, because it showed how much Owen truly understands Cristina and wants what is best for her. She is not a good match for the CR position, but she will be an excellent surgeon. And that's just what Owen encouraged her to be. I don't get it when viewers complain that Owen doesn't support Cristina's career. On the contrary, he's been supporting her every step of the way and never more so than right now. It was telling that Cristina realized he was right and vowed to be excellent in everything she did from the OR to the bedroom. The juxtaposition of those scenes (the argument in the conference room to the kiss-and-make-up at Joe's) showed how well these two know each other and how deeply they love one another. Finally there was Alex, who got an expected offer to go to Africa. Dr. Karev found himself at a crossroads. He can already tell that being anything but chief resident is going to be unsatisfying on some level, but moving to Africa is a major deal, particularly when he's got this undefined thing going with Lucy Fields. It took him most of the day but Alex finally decided to stay in Seattle and hoped to convince Lucy to turn down her offer to go Baylor and make a go of their relationship. Then came the bombshell. Lucy did turn down Baylor ... to go to Africa ... for the job Alex was considering. I've got to admit that I didn't see that one coming (and at this point, I see most things coming). The sting of that betrayal led to something I think most of us saw coming. Alex revealed Meredith's deception in the Alzheimer's trial. Yikes. That's gonna leave a mark. In the meantime, two triangles came to the fore. After making the decision to be with Jackson, Lexie found herself mooning over Mark yet again. It's time for full disclosure here. I'm on Team Jackson. I think he and Lexie are a much better match in every possible way than Lexie and Mark. Having said that, I wish she would choose someone already. Enough. Seriously. And then we had Teddy and her two suitors. Again, if I'm being honest, I haven't much cared whether Teddy chose Andrew or Henry. I'm just not that interested in Teddy's love life. But now I'm with Richard. I too like to support the underdog and Henry needs all the help he can get. Plus Scott Foley is all kinds of adorable, so Team Henry it is. What's to Come Since I know that many readers try to avoid spoilers at all costs, I'm going to avoid details of any kind. I shall merely address the promo in a general way. Let me simply say: Oh. My. Goodness. Meredith! Cristina! Alex! Meredith and Derek! Cristina and Owen! Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! The season finale of Grey's Anatomy, "Unaccompanied Minor," airs next Thursday, May 19 on ABC. www.buddytv.com/articles/greys-anatomy/greys-anatomy-fan-columnist-se-40294.aspx

'Grey's Anatomy' recap: All's Fair In Love And Job Advancement The time has come for each of the Chief Resident hopefuls to interview with Owen, and at the same time everyone is doing what they need to do out of the interview room as well. Jackson actually knocks himself out of the running early when he inexplicably resigns from the Chief's diabetes clinical trial. Owen's actually kind of peeved about it since he thinks Jackson has a history of quitting when things get hard, and then he wonders if the trial is flawed. But when Owen investigates the trial, he finds that it's actually so awesome it could potentially win awards, such as the very one named after Jackson's grandfather. Owen realizes that Jackson quit because he realized that if he was on the trial it would never win said award, and he tells Jackson he respects the decision but also warns him not to let the name hold him back. Jackson isn't too worried that he's out of the running because he still has his loving girlfriend Lexie -- though she spends most of the episode mooning over Mark and Sofia, who are hanging out during Callie's first day back at work. It seems the image of Mark with an infant isn't as horrifying as she had anticipated, and in fact is turning out to be her own personal catnip. Meredith is finding that she's pretty into the baby idea as well. She and Derek are still working to try and adopt Zola, but Meredith is fretting about all the ways things could go wrong and the adoption could fall through. Zola has to have routine surgery for a hernia, and Mere worries during the entire procedure while watching through the window, but things go totally fine. She then has a meeting with someone from the adoption agency to see how suitable she might be as a parent, and she's crazy nervous and awkward during the interview. Once she calms down a bit and just speaks honestly, she winds up doing a great job showing the woman how much she cares about Zola in her own way. The other thing adding to Mere's stress level is that she's terrified that Alex is going to spill the beans about her switcheroo in the trial, but he keeps it to himself, even though he's pretty bitter about it. As part of her interview, April shows Owen how well her checklists work to make sure the doctors follow protocol in treating every patient. But her plan is messed up when Cristina swoops in and takes one of the patients herself instead of calling Teddy to consult as the list told her to do. Cristina discovers that the guy has a tiny little tree that is growing in one of his lungs and decides that she's going to do the surgery to remove it herself. April is totally against it until Cristina offers to put in a good word for her with Owen if she keeps her mouth shut. April seems tempted, but ultimately she blows the whistle on Cristina, and Richard, Teddy and Owen are all livid. The patient, however, is so grateful for Cristina figuring out what was wrong with him that he insists she do the surgery herself. It seems like Teddy's head might explode from seeing Cristina totally flaunt the rules and yet save the day once again. Once Cristina has her own Chief Resident interview with Owen, he tells her point-blank that she's not getting the job, but it's not because of the stunt she pulled -- instead, he points out that the job entails a ton of managerial bulls***, scheduling, dealing with other residents' problems, and all sorts of other things that Cristina would hate. He tells her that she's a brilliant surgeon and should just focus on surgery. She's completely peeved off, but once she has time to think about it (time, and a few drinks at the bar) she realizes he's right and that he's looking out for her, and they make up. blog.zap2it.com/ithappenedlastnight/2011/05/greys-anatomy-recap-alls-fair-in-love-and-job-advancement.html

'Grey's Anatomy': 5 reasons why Alex Karev did the right thing The race for chief resident heated up on "Grey's Anatomy" as the field of candidates went down to just two and may have driven Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) to play dirty. It was a process of elimination for the position as the episode rolled on. Avery (Jesse Williams) pulled himself from the diabetes trial and by doing so, out of the running for chief resident, as well. By going over Teddy's (Kim Raver) head, Yang (Sandra Oh) proved that her passion was in surgery and would probably die on the vine as chief resident. And while Kepner (Sarah Drew) had the rules down, she lacks the forcefulness to enforce them. That leaves Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Karev for the position. But, Karev had a tough week and then his new girlfriend (and ruthless witch) snatched away his option of taking a job with the African kids. So, when faced with the possibility that he may lose the chief resident position to Meredith, he ratted Meredith's tampering with the Alzheimer's study to Owen (Kevin McKidd). We know your first thought was probably "Bastardo!" But, we think he did the right thing (recently crossed by the hot doctor and possibly drunk considered). Hear us out! We have five good reasons: 1.) This is business, not personal. 2.) Meredith took it upon herself to decide between one patient's life over another. And she had no right. 3.) Derek deserves to know that his trial was in jeopardy and she wasn't going to tell him. 4.) By doing what she did, Meredith proved she wasn't the right person for the chief resident job and she really brought all this upon herself. 5.) If Karev didn't say anything, then he's as guilty as Meredith is. Do you disagree? Should Karev have kept his mouth shut? blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2011/05/greys-anatomy-5-reasons-why-alex-karev-did-the-right-thing.html
