On target ... Brave is set to be a hit
Film invaluable to Scotland
ALEX Salmond tells us why Brave is the right fit for Scotland — and reviews the film
Brave boys: The blokes behind animated epicI’m lucky to be part of Brave
Our biggest stars are in town to close the Edinburgh International Film Festival on Saturday night — ahead of the film’s general release on August 3.
On day four of our special series celebrating the biggest Scottish movie since Braveheart MARC DEANIE gives you the lowdown on all things Brave...
A - A-listers
The cream of Scots showbiz names were snapped up for the film. US chat show king Craig Ferguson (Lord Macintosh), Trainspotting beauty Kelly Macdonald (Princess Merida) and Grey’s Anatomy hunk Kevin McKidd (Lord and Young MacGuffin) are all on-board.
As is Robbie Coltrane. Robbie, who stars as Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies, plays Lord Dingwall.
Our most famous comedian, Billy Connolly, voices King Fergus and Emma Thompson completes the star-studded cast as Queen Elinor.
B - Blockbuster
Brave topped the US box office in its opening weekend — knocking Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted off No1.
C - Chapman
American writer Brenda Chapman penned the screenplay after being inspired by her relationship with her 12-year-old daughter.
Brenda led the project until she was replaced by Mark Andrews as director two years ago.
D - Doric
The North East dialect has gone to Hollywood thanks to Elgin-born actor McKidd who convinced Disney-Pixar to use his local lingo.
E - Ecstasy
No, not the drug which McKidd’s Trainspotting character Tommy saw plenty of in the junkie film.
Patriotic Scots will be buzzing when they see their country’s famous scenery on the big screen.
F - Fashion
Brave was upstaged at its own US premiere — by First Minister Alex Salmond in his shocking TARTAN TROUSERS.
G - Ginger
Merida is set to eclipse ex-Doctor Who babe Karen Gillan - by becoming Scotland’s most famous RED-HEAD.
H - Haggis
There aren’t many bloopers — apart from Pixar’s wobbly jelly-like version of our national dish.
I - India
The animated epic has also gone to BOLLYWOOD. A rip-off Indian version called KIARA THE BRAVE was in cinemas last year but within weeks en route to DVD.
J - Julie
Robbie Coltrane isn’t the only Harry Potter star in Brave as Julie Walters — Ron Weasley’s mum Molly — voices the evil witch who causes chaos for Merida with a curse.
K - Kelly
The yummy mummy looked gorgeous on the green carpet at Brave’s world premiere in Los Angeles. And her performance in the movie — albeit vocal — is every bit as stunning.
L - Lesbian
A top American magazine reckons Princess Merida is GAY.
Adam Markovitz, from Entertainment Weekly, said: “It’s quite possible that while watching Brave’s tomboyish heroine shoot arrows, fight like one of the boys, and squirm when her mother puts her in girly clothes, a thought might pop into the head of some viewers: Is Merida gay?”
M - Mor'du
Brave’s biggest baddie is a monstrous 15ft BEAR.
Connolly’s hilarious character King Fergus lost his leg in a battle with him and it’s a tale he doesn’t tire of telling...
N - Naughty
Merida is a proper screen BRAT as she defies her parents’ orders to get hitched, inadvertently puts a curse on her kingdom and almost gets her mum killed.
O - Oscars
Brave could net the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at next year’s ceremony.
P - Pixar
The US giants turned to Scotland in search of a global hit — and it looks to have paid off. Their last film Cars 2 — released in 2011 — was panned by critics Stateside.
Q - Queen Elinor
Oscar winner Emma Thompson’s mum Phyllida might be from Glasgow but the star serves up a vocal turkey.
R - Rivalry
Sir Sean Connery’s animation film Sir Billi went to war with Brave for stealing its thunder.
Overshadowed ... Sir Billi
Film-maker Tessa Hartmann, who teamed up with the Bond legend for the flick, fumed: “The Scottish Government have put £7million of advertising and promotions into Brave. Wouldn’ t it have been nice if they supported a film business in Scotland?”
S - Sequel
Brave’s ending leaves it hanging perfectly for a second film and McKidd hinted in The Scottish Sun: “I feel bad for Young MacGuffin that he didn’t get the girl — but it may be in the sequel.”
T - Tourism
First Minister Salmond and VisitScotland chief Mike Cantlay have been dropping T-bombs everywhere these past few weeks.
And no wonder, they’ve teamed up with Disney-Pixar for a £7million marketing campaign, which could generate £140m for Scotland as the movie’s to be shown in over 70 countries.
U - Ugly
The movie’s male characters are all MINGERS. King Fergus, his Triplets, The Three Lords and their sons have all fallen straight out of the ugly tree.
Is Hollywood taking a swipe at Scots blokes?
V - Voices
The all-star cast provided their famous voices for the film — but other projects meant they recorded separately in the studio.
Coltrane, 62, said: “The director said it would’ve been great to have Billy Connolly, Craig Ferguson and I in one room. We’d have had a lot of fun but no work would’ve been done.”
W - Witherspoon
Oscar-winning actress Reese, 36, was up to Walk The Line as Princess Merida but pulled out and Boardwalk Empire babe Kelly got the call.
X - X-rated language
There is NO cursing despite reports in a posh paper. The chin-strokers said they heard a scream of “you’re p**h” during Merida’s archery contest. They’re talking p**h!
Y - Youngsters
Kids will go crazy for Brave — even Kelly’s four-year-old son Freddie has a Merida DOLL.
She said: “Brave is going to appeal to everybody — mothers, daughters and fathers.
“And little boys will love it secretly, too
“Mine plays with his Merida doll. The fact she’s got a weapon is enough to keep them interested!”
Children can already get Brave bags, wigs, costumes and DESSERT PLATES online.
Z - Zzzzzzz
Don’t worry — you WON’T fall asleep watching Brave.
It’s an animation sensation!
