'Grey's Anatomy's' Kevin McKidd on Hope for Cristina and Owen: 'They're Still Destined to be Together'The actor tells THR that he'll bury himself in work while Cristina handles her PTSD from afar. When Grey's Anatomy returns for its ninth season Thursday, Seattle Grace will have a very different vibe to it. While Owen is still the chief, to say the hospital's ranks have taken a hit would be an understatement. Lexie (sniff!) didn't survive the plane crash and last viewers saw, Mark and Arizona were both in pretty rough shape. Plus Cristina, despite reconciling with her cheating husband in the penultimate episode of season eight, vowed that she wouldn't be returning to the hospital. The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Kevin McKidd to get the scoop on where the beloved couple are heading into the ninth season and how Owen will handle the distance between the couple as well as what new challenges he'll face as chief (hint: an angry Meredith). The Hollywood Reporter: What's the journey like for Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Owen this season?Kevin McKidd:It's complicated. They went through a lot last season and all the issues that they have are still very much in the air and unresolved. It's hard for them to find a path back. However, I think they might. We're not really there yet as far as what we've shot but there's still hope for them. They're still destined to be together. They're a complicated couple and their issues remain even after the plane crash. It's going to be challenging to say the least. Showrunner Shonda Rhimes has called this the season of romance. How will that affect Owen? Owen's very focused in the hospital and on being chief. The aftermath of the crash and helping people rehabilitate. The first half of the season certainly feels like he's all business. Whether that will come later in the season, I'm sure it will and I hope it does because Owen needs a bit of romance; he's gone through a dark time. With Cristina and Owen being physically separated, might we see him move on with other women? I haven't seen any evidence of that yet. They're very much separated, but that hasn't happened yet and we're through episode seven. How will Owen as the chief handle all of his doctors being involved in the plane crash? The whole hospital is really affected by Lexie's (Chyler Leigh) death. Owen is no stranger to trauma, having spent all that time in Iraq. He can use that and help people through and be understanding with what their psychological struggle is, which is very important. Might Owen have to pay a price for his role in putting the hospital's best and brightest all on the same flight? We don't know that yet. It'll definitely be interesting and it will shed a lot of light on what happened in those minutes and hours right after the crash. The second episode is a flashback to the crash and it's an fascinating way to jump back and forth in time in episodes one and two. Could Owen, who has struggled with PTSD in the past, help Cristina deal with the same in the wake of the crash? They're very much estranged in the first two episodes, so he doesn't get the opportunity to do that. The crash fundamentally affects everyone. What are the big issues facing Owen and Cristina in the wake of the crash? Sometimes these kinds of events can clear the decks, but sometimes they make things more complicated and less resolvable. There's this even bigger distance between them and Cristina is going through something psychological and of course there was a distance between them anyway and that just widens between them in the first two episodes. How will Owen struggle with that distance? This is the love of his life, but being a guy he tries to bury his head in work and do what he can do to the best of his abilities and not talk about it. He doesn't seek out a shoulder to cry on, which is the typical Owen move. He'll stew in it for a while. He's a pretty standard guy in that sense that he keeps things close to his chest. We've heard that Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) will turn into almost a Bailey 2.0 and turn into a tough doctor in the wake of the crash. How will Owen handle her altered personality? In the first few episodes, they don't have much interaction. They don't really cross paths that much. But Owen is keeping an eye on her. Meredith shuts down and that's her way of coping with life and death and she does harden herself in a way, which actually makes her very affective yet formidable teacher. All these doctors who were residents are now attendings and there's a responsibility on them that wasn't there before. It's interesting to see how they cope with the that and the stress of the aftermath of the crash. Will you be directing again this season? I hope so, I love getting to direct, it's a wonderful opportunity. Each time I do it, I'm getting better at it. It's quite addicting to direct. I hope to and we'll see what comes in the back-nine. It takes a lot of logistical production and organization to get me and Chandra into the directing spot because you have to try and write us light and organize production meetings around our shooting schedules. www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/greys-anatomy-season-9-kevin-mckidd-cristina-owen-spoilers-374534

‘Grey’s Anatomy’s’ Kevin McKidd on the Crash Aftermath, Taking Charge, and Owen and Cristina’s Future (Q&A)When ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy returns on Thursday, there will be plenty of emotion and aftermath to deal with, not only for the doctors stranded by the tragic plane crash in last season’s finale but also for those back at Seattle Grace. Perhaps no one back at the hospital has more to do than Chief of Surgery Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). When we last saw Hunt, he was hearing the ill-fated messages that something had gone wrong as there was no word of his staff in Idaho. The Season 9 premiere of Grey’s picks up a few months after the crash, and McKidd says he feels like it’s going to be an interesting challenge for his character to take on. “He’s got a lot of balls to juggle, and he’s got a lot of people that are pretty traumatized by what happened, so he’s finding that challenging. I think he steps up to the challenge in quite an interesting way and really does help, not in a shoulder-to-cry-on way because that’s never been Owen’s style,” McKidd, 39, tells Celebuzz. “He kind of knows what people need in situations like this to hold on to, to get by, to get through the pain. Owen does help in a major way, I think, to make people move on. It’s about moving on and accepting. Owen’s pretty instrumental in helping people do that.” Read what McKidd says about how Owen will handle the effects of the plane crash, what impact, the departing doctors have on Seattle Grace, and the future of Owen and Cristina (Sandra Oh). Celebuzz: Given Owen’s past with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), is Owen a source of strength for those doctors who have just experienced this horrifically tragic event? Kevin McKidd: I think he definitely can help and is helping in that way. Even though it’s stressful too for him, he wants people back — he didn’t have to go through this event but in a major way he can empathize. All his Iraq friends and colleagues were killed in one IED bombing in a vehicle that he was being transported in. That in some ways is a very similar event, in a strange way, so he can very much empathize. CB: In Episode 2, we flashback to the immediate reaction to the crash. What do we see happening with Owen at this point? What was it like to play those types of scenes? KM: It’s pretty traumatic stuff. It’s a really intense episode, Episode 2. So is Episode 1, but seeing those hours and minutes and days directly after the crash, how Owen manages to corral his staff back to Seattle is really interesting and emotional and quite dark. There’s a lot of intensity and a lot of deep emotion going on. People have gone through a lot. They’re like a family, these doctors, so you see Owen become very protective. Bailey [Chandra Wilson] and Richard [James Pickens, Jr.] as well as Owen are trying to gather up their staff and get them home. It’s an emotional episode in that sense. CB: At the end of last season, Cristina was planning to leave Seattle Grace, as was Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey). How does this devastating event change their plans? KM:I think the crash definitely changes everything. Plans get shifted. Plans get changed. Events like this can’t go without having a ripple effect so it definitely changes things. The plans that were made in the finale last year change. Some change into something that we wouldn’t expect. It’s not like things carry on the way they were before. Things do change, quite a lot. CB: The question on every Grey’s fan’s mind is: What will happen with Owen and Cristina? With this experience showing both of them just how short life can really be, will the crash bring them closer together? KM: I hope it will, eventually. In the first couple of episodes you see Owen trying to reach Cristina, but it’s hard. There’s still a lot of distance between them. There’s a lot of hurt and pain – shared pain of different things that have happened and baggage that they have. He is still trying to reach her, but how much she receives it is another question. I think they’ll get there, but it’s hard for them. They’ve always been a very challenged couple. That seems to be where they thrive, at their most challenged. I still have a belief they’re going to find their way back to each other, but it doesn’t get wrapped up in a couple of episodes, let’s put it that way. CB: Some of the fans on Twitter have said they miss you being a major Army badass. Will we see any of that kind of Owen this year? KM: I don’t know if we’re going to see that this year. You see him being very chiefly. He’s got that heroic element to him, Owen. You definitely see that as the season goes on. A few events unfold that Owen has to really be the hero. You’ll see a little bit of those heroic-type traits he has come out a little more. CB: How does the loss of Lexie (Chyler Leigh) and the impending departure of Mark (Eric Dane) affect the other doctors and your duties as Chief? KM: Those holes in the staff have to be filled, obviously, so new people start coming in. They do the mourn loss of these people. It’s like a family, these doctors. You do feel it for quite some time, the absence of those characters. I think you feel that anyway on the set because we’re all like a family down there. When people go it becomes a very emotional thing, and that plays itself out on screen, which is, hopefully, very satisfying for the fans. People are just trying to pick up their lives and pick up the pieces and make sense of it all, as anybody would in a situation like this. In a way, it’s a quite a dark opening to the season, but it gets positive again once the initial aftermath [passes]. When things like this happen, it does make you realize life is short, life is very transient. People start to really live in the show, too. People sort of go, “We’ve only got this one shot at this. We’ve got to make our lives happy.” All these realizations come to pass. The ninth season of Grey’s Anatomy premieres Thursday at 9 PM on ABC. For even more Owen opinions, McKidd will be live tweeting the premiere (@therealkmckidd) during the Pacific Coast Broadcast at 9 PM PST/ 12 AM EST. www.celebuzz.com/2012-09-27/greys-anatomys-kevin-mckidd-on-the-crash-aftermath-taking-charge-and-owen-and-cristinas-future-exclusive/

www.tvguide.com/News/Mega-Buzz-Greys-1054166.aspxGot any Grey's Anatomy scoop on Derek? — Jacob NATALIE: Now that he's unable to operate, Derek will turn to teaching the interns. "Derek has to try and find his peace with that," Kevin McKidd tells us. "He doesn't get to cut anymore, but he gets to be this amazing teacher. Owen helps him learn how to be a teacher again." Speaking of our favorite Seattle Grace docs, you saw this, right?

Ask Ausiello: Question: Now that the cat is finally out of the bag about Arizona on Grey’s Anatomy, and it looks like things are going to get pretty dark for “Calzona,” any thoughts on Callie’s state of being through all of this? She just lost her best friend and her wife hates her — things seem pretty tough. —Jen Ausiello: Well, they’re certainly not ideal. As Sara Ramirez notes, even though Callie wasn’t in the plane crash, she walks away from the tragedy with some huge emotional scars. “Her life and her child’s life are affected, greatly,” she shares. “And we see her having to grapple with the constant reminder of what’s happened, not being able to get away from it.” Question: Any Grey’s scoop beyond this week’s flashback episode? —Jane Ausiello:Good news — the Oct. 25 outing will have you crying tears of joy not heartache, assures the episode’s director, Kevin McKidd. “The first three episodes deal with all the repercussions of the finale, so Episode 4 is very comedic,” he reports. “We needed some lightness. It’s good to be dark for a while, but people like to have their lightness… the more kind of slightly zany, screwball stuff that Grey’s does so well. Tonally it’s so different from the first three episodes of the season.” Question: Do you know when Meredith will start dealing with Lexie’s death on Grey’s Anatomy? She definitely seemed to be avoiding everything in the premiere. —TiaAusiello: The you-know-what will hit the fan in the upcoming Mer/Cristina-centric hour, “Beautiful Doom,” which is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 1 and does not sound comedic, slightly zany or screwball. tvline.com/2012/10/02/gossip-girl-spoilers-greys-anatomy-how-i-met-your-mother/

Ask Ausiello
Question: Any Meredith and Derek scoop that you can give us Grey’s Anatomy fans? —Tia
Ausiello: If Ellen Pompeo has any say in the matter, Derek will soon replace Cristina atop Mer’s “Person” list. “It’s not very realistic that a married woman would have her best friend be her No. 1 before her husband,” the actress shares. “I guess if you’re 20. But for a grown woman, your No. 1 person should be your husband — or what’s the point of getting married? Your significant other should be your significant other, so hopefully we’ll transition into that.” Where do you stand on this issue?
Does Pompeo make a good point? Should Derek be Mer’s “Person” over Cristina? Hit the comments!

Ask Ausiello
Question: I’m a huge Grey’s Anatomy fan, and an even bigger Cristina/Owen fan. I know they are the “red-headed step children” of all of the couples on the show right now, but is there any hope for them? —Laura C Ausiello: There’s more than hope. There’s confirmation from Shonda Rhimes that they will eventually find their way back to each other. But a familiar and daunting obstacle awaits – he still wants to have children. “That’s a fundamental thing,” concedes Kevin McKidd. “It’s in his DNA. He wants to be a dad. I don’t know how [they overcome that]… It’s going to be a tough road. I enjoyed last season watching their decline. But my hope as a fan is that they make it back to each other.”
Question: Please!! Dying!! Need Grey’s Anatomy scoop!! Please help!! Thanks!! —Tamar Ausiello: A new plane crash-related wrinkle will present itself in the coming weeks, and this one could have far-reaching implications for all the survivors. Now, a question for you, Tamar: Why some many exclamation points?!?!?!?!?!?

Grey's Anatomy Scoop: Is There Hope for Cristina and Owen?Oct 17, 2012 09:41 PM ET by Natalie Abrams Sure, Mark Sloan and Lexie Grey died, and Arizona had her leg amputated. But what has been most painful for some Grey's Anatomy fans this season is the agonizing distance between Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Owen (Kevin McKidd). After the plane crash, Cristina hightailed it out of Seattle, willing to deal with the harsh winter of Minnesota to get as far away from her old stomping grounds as possible. Does her move signal the end of C/O as we know it? "I think they really are destined to be together," McKidd tells TVGuide.com. Let's all take a moment to exhale. Below, McKidd dishes on what's in store for the troubled lovers this season, including Owen's big move. Plus: What are the repercussions of the plane crash? Get the scoop: What can you tell us about Cristina and Owen's journey this year?Kevin McKidd: It's hard to see just how they're going to fix things. They're pretty damaged and there have been wrongs done on both sides. They're both pretty strong-willed people, they love each other and they've got this deep connection that's undeniable. In the first couple of episodes, you don't really see them make much headway. Owen's trying to reach out to Cristina and she's not really able or willing to receive much from Owen yet. There's still that distance between them that hopefully will break down as they move forward. They're very much as separate as they've ever been even though they're married. But is there hope for them?McKidd: I think there's hope. I just hope they can make it because I think they're a cool couple and I think they really are destined to be together, but how they do that is hard to tell at the moment. I think it's going to be Owen striving to win her back, but it's going to take a while. With all the death and damage from the plane crash, Owen seems to be handling being in charge well. McKidd: The good thing about Owen this year is he's rising to the occasion. Even though this is maybe the toughest year at Seattle Grace with all this loss going on, he's doing a good job. He's not a shoulder to cry on or touchy-feely, but he knows what people need. He also needs his own safety valve. I think he realizes, in the episode that I'm directing, through speaking to Callie [Sara Ramirez] and going through his own process, that he needs to simplify his life. Things are so complex here. So, he decides that he's moving out of the firehouse and he's going to ask Derek [Patrick Dempsey] if he can stay in the woods in the trailer. It seems like the natural place for Owen to regress to when things are really bad. He goes to the ultimate man cave and just really downsizes his life and just lives out in the woods and runs the hospital. He's in a bit of a holding pattern, in a way. He's waiting to see where Cristina is, he's feeling very helpless and very out of control and all that stuff, so that's how he's coping with it. Does he feel any guilt over forwarding his calls during the plane crash?McKidd: I think obviously he feels responsible. It was under his watch that this thing happened, even though it's not his fault. He can't help but feel this survivor's guilt. That will play out in an interesting way. It might be something that could come back to haunt him. He's going to be under a lot of pressure in the coming episodes and that's going to get ugly professionally for him. Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) will be going through PTSD, surely. Will Owen be there to help her?McKidd: I think he hopes that Arizona can get back to a place where she can be back running the department again. But amputation, it takes as long as it takes. She's in her own inner circle of Callie and the guy that's going to rehabilitate her. What does his relationship with Derek look like this season with Cristina gone and Mark (Eric Dane) dead?McKidd: There's a lot of honesty between him and Derek. We clear the decks. We've always been quite honest with each other, but this strips their relationship down even more and they get much clearer and simpler with each other while everything around them is so complicated. Initially you see them being quite there for each other and you definitely see that friendship gather steam. Will Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) be there at all to help him with the Cristina stuff?McKidd: I think there's a tacit agreement now. Owen and Cristina are made for each other, and I think Meredith's more on that side now. She gets what the connection is between Owen and Cristina more than she ever did. Will Owen try to find someone new while Cristina is away, or does he feel too much guilt after cheating on her?McKidd: I think he's manning up to what happened. He's holding out for Christina. Whether that will be reciprocated, he doesn't know. But until he's explored every avenue to see if it's healable and fixable, then he's going to hold out for her because she's the love of his life. I think he still hopes that she feels the same way about him. Are you hoping Cristina and Owen will get back together? Sound off in the comments. Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC. www.tvguide.com/News/Greys-Anatomy-Spoilers-Kevin-McKidd-1054786.aspx

Grey's Anatomy's Kevin McKidd on Cristina's Big Mistake and His "Upbeat" EpisodeGrey's Anatomy will lighten up a bit when Kevin McKidd steps behind the camera for the fourth time for Thursday's episode. Following the plane crash — which brought on the deaths of Mark (Eric Dane) and Lexie (Chyler Leigh) and the amputation of Arizona's (Jessica Capshaw) leg — Grey's kicked off its ninth season on a very dark note. But McKidd promises he's about to turn that around with what he calls an "upbeat" episode. "I think the writers felt the audience needed a break, so Episode 4 is really fun," McKidd tells TVGuide.com. "All my other episodes have been quite intense, so it's been really fun to break out of that. I think people will be relieved to take a rest and just get to have fun with the show a little bit after the first few episodes." The storylines that offer comedic relief include a patient with huge testicles, which McKidd says they had trouble shooting around. Plus: Catherine Avery (Debbie Allen) returns, which causes a rift between Jackson (Jesse Williams) and Dr. Webber (James Pickens, Jr.). "Jackson and Richard have a big standoff about the ongoing saga of him dating Catherine," McKidd teases. "Bailey [Chandra Wilson] weighs in on that." Grey's Anatomy is a drama, however, so there will be one very large obstacle for fans of Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Owen's relationship. to get through this week. Spoiler Alert: The promos don't lie! "[Cristina] has a sexual relationship with somebody else in Minnesota," McKidd says. Dun Dun Dunnnn! Also... really? Dr. Parker (Steven Culp)? Really?! But there is hope on the horizon: McKidd says Cristina's exploits are an "empty experience for her." "It fulfills a certain need for her, but there's certainly not that same thing that she gets when Cristina and Owen are together," he says. "It's going to be really interesting to see how to get back and whether they're able to. They may still love each other, but there might just be too much hurt going on. There might just be too much baggage to really be able to heal or rebuild. It's a painful truth, but I think Cristina and Owen wish they could be back together, even though they're apart." And don't necessarily expect Owen to retaliate against Cristina's indiscretions. "I think he's manning up to what happened," McKidd said. "He's holding out for Cristina. Whether that will be reciprocated, he doesn't know. But until he's explored every avenue to see if it's heal-able and fixable, then he's going to hold out for her because she's the love of his life." This is exactly why, McKidd believes, executive producer Shonda Rhimes has dubbed this the season of romance. "It's like that old phrase: The darkest hour is always before the dawn." Can the sun rise now, please? Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC. www.tvguide.com/News/Greys-Anatomy-Kevin-McKidd-1055045.aspx

I'm so excited about Ben and Bailey's wedding on Grey's Anatomy! Do you have any details? — Nora NATALIE: Let's just say getting Bailey actually down the aisle will be a miracle! "It's almost like pulling a tugboat to get her to cooperate, but the thing is happening with or without her, and she's got to get on board with the program at some point," Chandra Wilson says. "Bailey can be distracted very easily, and she's already been married and done it in what she thought was the right way and it failed, so there's a lot of fear going into it again." Look for her to get a kick in the butt from both Cristina and Callie. www.tvguide.com/News/MegaBuzz-Greys-Five0-Vampire-Diaries-1056174.aspx

Question: Do you have any Jackson and April/Grey’s Anatomy scoop? They’re my new favorite couple! —Lucy Ausiello: I have it on semi-good authority that when the new year rolls around McBabyBlues will be schtupping someone whose name is not April — leading me to believe the on-again/off-again colleagues will be off again. Question: I’ll take anything you have on Grey’s Anatomy! If you answer, I’ll make you mint chocolate chip cookies (or just plain chocolate chip if you don’t like mint)! —Samantha Ausiello: Shonda Rhimes is looking for an actor in his mid-30s to play an EMT (Extremely Mature Totalhottie?) for a three-episode arc. Got casting tips? Theories as to whose bed he’ll end up in? Hit the comments! And re: that extremely generous bribe Sam, I’ll see your mint chocolate chip cookies and raise you a dozen of these bad boys (peanut butter flavor, ideally) delivered to my doorstep. tvline.com/2012/11/13/mad-men-season-6-spoilers-ask-ausiello/

Keck's Exclusives First Look: Grey's Anatomy Interns Spill Sexy Secrets! Nov 12, 2012 07:00 AM ET by William Keck The Interns on Grey's Anatomy The Grey's Anatomy newbies haven't done an interview...until now. Seattle Grace's interns get an episode told from their point of view on December 6, then three of them (Shane, Jo and Stephanie) attend Dr. Bailey's wedding on December 13. "We see the interns pairing up with the doctors [and] romantic stuff happens," teases Gaius Charles (Shane). The rookies share some scoop. Heather (Tina Majorino, 27) Alex's one-night stand is put on Meredith's service and gets caught in the middle of a fight between Meredith and Derek, which sparks memories of her broken home. "Meredith asks Heather to do some research on a procedure to help Derek's hand," says the Big Love alum. "It blows up, and Derek ends up screaming at Meredith and Heather." Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton, age not disclosed) The doc is dubbed "Grumpy" by Cristina, then at Bailey's wedding can barely form a sentence in the presence of her secret crush (Alex? Derek? Jackson?). Expect them to share an intimate encounter. Says Hinton, "It's definitely charged." Shane (Charles, 29) He's assigned to April and gets lectured on the questionable bedside manner he exhibits when he extracts a growth from a woman's private parts. "It's gross and humiliating, but some good comes out of it," Charles says. "Shane and April form a friendship." Jo (Camilla Luddington, 28) She's put on Alex's team "and cannot stand him," says Luddington, who, along with Charles, observed a real open-heart surgery. "Alex gets under her skin as no one else has done and calls her 'Princess.'" Luddington won't confirm, but don't be surprised if Jo ends up being Alex's "person." Leah (Tessa Ferrer, 26) Leah is pitted against Steph when both are assigned to Cristina and must monitor a set of babies. "It gets out of control and puts our jobs in jeopardy," teases Ferrer. Then we'll see the extent of Leah's heartbreak from getting screwed over by Alex (yes, he hooked up with her, too): "She's really pining after him." www.tvguide.com/News/Greys-Anatomy-Interns-1055840.aspx

A new face is coming to Seattle Grace.
Nip/Tuck alum Roma Maffia has landed a multi-episode arc on Grey's Anatomy, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.
Maffia will play Roberta, a member of the hospital's board, who will first appear in the Nov. 29 episode. With the plane-crash lawsuit ramping up, it seems likely that Roberta and the rest of the board will be pulled into the fray.

CW's interview: www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/15/greys-anatomy-chandra-wilson_n_2132816.htmlWhat else can you tease about the rest of the season? Well, the plane crash and the ramifications are still rolling out legally, so there's an interesting place where blame ends up being placed, and we start to feel that in this episode. And that whole Owen and Cristina thing has an ending that's just crazy. You know how volatile those two characters are ... they are volatile. And yes, there will be a wedding before we finish out 2012, but that's all I'm gonna say about that!Tell us: Do you think Bailey and Ben will get married? Will Callie and Arizona resolve their issues? And will Cristina and Owen get divorced? www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/15/greys-anatomy-chandra-wilson_n_2132816.html
