Okay, so I've rewatched "the" scenes a few (or maybe more than a few) times. My excuse was that I was trying to hear Owen say "come here" at some point during the conference room scene, as I know some people have said he does. I still can't hear that, but I don't mind having spent the time trying to!
And I've decided these are my two very most favorite moments in those two all-too-brief scenes:
The scrub room scene: The camera is on Cristina's face when Owen says "It takes a lot of small mistakes to destroy something." (The preceding exchange was Cristina saying "You're not responsible" and Owen responding "Someone has to be.") One of Sandra's many gifts as an actress is how well she listens and reacts, and how much information she can communicate without words, something I particularly notice in her scenes with Kevin. As Owen said the words about lots of small mistakes leading to destruction, I watched Cristina both realize the depth of his pain and guilt AND (maybe I'm projecting here) realize that she made mistakes that contributed to the destruction of their marriage, that SHE needs to be responsible too. It felt like a real turning point. I hope it is, and that we actually get to see that more clearly on screen in more scenes between them.
The conference room scene: When Owen answers her question about his reason for wanting the divorce, he puts the response in terms of her feelings, saying "you were done, a long time ago." So sad. But the part I really really loved was when she says "I'm asking about you." He doesn't answer her in words, but his face says everything. It isn't that he doesn't know what he feels; he knows exactly what he feels for her but he just can't say it out loud, he just can't, yet again, be the one who goes out on a limb and says "of course I still love you, of course I still want you." He's been shot down too many times and he just can't go there again. He looks away then back at her, almost pleading without words "don't make me say it. I can't say it again." And this time she finally gets it, she FINALLY understands that it's not all about Owen's love for her (remember how she set him up for the news she was aborting their child in the S7 finale by saying "How much do you love me?"). If she wants to reach him, if she really wants to try, she needs to let him know how SHE feels. And she does.
Before Thursday night, I would have said (and probably did) that it wasn't possible to recapture the S5 C/O magic, that too much damage had been done. And it will take more than a combined 3 minutes of screen time to make up for all the carnage of the last season and a half. But at least it feels like we and they have made a start!
There's no surprise there that those 2 are my favorite moments as well. Putting aside all the kissing - that no doubt I am glad we got - what I loved the most was that Cristina has finally started to see Owen and realize the depth of his pain (Sandra played that non verbal moment of realization beautifully). That her mistakes have had their contribution in the destruction of their relationship. For the first time in more than a season and a half she wanted to know how Owen feels and what he wants.
I would only add among the favorite moments for me, the way Owen delivered the line "I thought *you* were dead". A simple line but it says so much because of Kevin's delivery.
Hopefully this is only the start.
