I think the writers are hurting Owen as a character a lot with this storyline, like he doesn´t have a voice to speak for himself, just doing what Cristina tells him. That´s not who he is, the decisive and courageous man who survived horrors of the Iraq war. Especially in this episode, so lonely, eating on his own what somebody else serves him, all throughout his stay on the show the circle of real friends seems very small, they have forgotten Derek completely, Callie is on and off, Jackson is a work buddy only. They could have at least shown how Owen visits Webber or something like that. Or he finally starts looking into options for parenting which was the original reason of their break-up. All this stuff with Emma hapenning off-screen is really insulting to both characters, Owen to a great extent and Emma in a way, too.It makes it all look cheap and Owen comes off it worse because she is a newbie no one really cares for.
The writers are deliberately hurting his character like this which I don´t approve of. Also the storyline with the patient was more suited for Callie, Owen was just there. I didn´t like how Callie behaved, of course, having issues on her own, but laughing and taking it lightly that he is rebounding, even telling him he has a girl friend, is sort of engaged, when she herself was reconsidering looking back at herself and saying no, I don´t like her friendship to Owen anymore.
Cristina/Meredith situation is where I side with Meredith this time. You could feel there was some level of resentment from Cristina that Meredith chose a different pathway and is not available anymore for the groundbreaking surgery dream. Telling her she is good, but Cristina herself is 1000x times better, it´s not something that a true friend tells you.I´m great, you are just good. So even Bailey and Callie are better than Meredith, what a smackdown for Meredith, I bet it stung deep. A lot of this was coming from Cristina, the shark considering/feeling her own mistakes regarding Owen and their life together, maybe?
Cristina is so bitter that both Meredith and Owen choose family first is my impression of it, so she will leave both. Someone should remind her what the dinosaur told her in S5.

Tania, I agree with you that they are showing an Owen that is only "following instructions" in his life. He seems lost (which is understandable) but I wish he recovers and claims his life again!
they need to expand the character to have more friends but I think it makes sense to do it slowly. He will not suddenly become the social butterfly in the group. It is part of what he will need to learn in the process. But I want more scenes with Callie ASAP!! love them together (as friends )
I love your last comment "Cristina is so bitter that both Meredith and Owen choose family first is my impression of it, so she will leave both. Someone should remind her what the dinosaur told her in S5."
I noticed this episode was really flat. Not only in terms of writing but on the directing side too. Even the last scene between Cristina and Meredith felt flat.
I was expecting so much from the patient storyline that involved the sister that was conceived only to be the "spare parts shop" for her sister. That is a SL with the potential of being SOOO good (like the old GA would do) to explore and so complex (physically and emotionally) and it was completely misused.
