Just thought it might be fitting to start this thread about the symbolism in Grey's Anatomy. We seem to get into it a lot in our reviews, and I think it will help some of those who didn't start out Grey's fans here. Anyone want to kick this off? Any parallels you notice with the season premiere and these last final eps of the season?

- Owen & Cristina fixing each other (in the SP, and all season) - Derek as the paralysed man - Callie, Owen and the Chief going out to the woods to bring him back (at Bailey's instruction), paralleled by them doing therapeutic hypothermia on the guy in the SP to cure him of his paralysis - Izzie working on the woman with amnesia, now facing the possibility of her own memory loss
That's a start.

I was thinking with Owen there is a lot of foreshadowing/symbolism: you have the guy he did the tracheotomy on not being able to speak, then Owen later on when he comes back has trouble speaking. The patient who has nightmares and his daughter living in fear, clearly was foreshadowing Owen and Cristina. You also have Owen pulling out the "ice" from Cristina, its like the second that icicle is gone she is a different person the rest of the season.
I keep thinking about the three women in the car crash from the season premiere. If Owen is the guy that is all depressed and has an affair and can't speak in the end, Izzie is the one who loses her memory, who are the ones that have the affair? They kept hinting at it, esp since Mer says something like then I'll start sleeping with your husband, and we get the 'dream' of her and Mer in their old age, which is followed by Owen reappearing.

You also have Owen pulling out the "ice" from Cristina, its like the second that icicle is gone she is a different person the rest of the season. Christina "didn't give him permission" to take out the icicle but he did it anyway. I agree that throughout this season we watch Christina find a better balance between being driven to be an amazing surgeon and showing compassion. She's even nicer to the interns. She still likes to have some control though - "Let me decide what I can handle". Owen's therapy involves him being ashamed for getting involved with her when he clearly wasn't fully together - ashamed for pulling out that icicle without permission. In the beginning of his therapy, he is trying to walk away from the relationship to spare her (Sweet Surrender), but there are still feelings there for both of them. Now that Owen is further in his therapy, he is longing for her, but knows he can't rush it, can't barge into it again, needs to know she is OK, and needs to wait for her. That's why he reaches out delicately to her, letting her know he is there for her if she wants, instead of the passionate kisses like in the alley and boiler room. With Christina taking down the ceiling fan, we know she's not done, and we know she wants to work on the relationship as well. I think the finale will have some forgiveness between these two and Chris giving Owen permission to her heart, and they will work through it together.

Well I think they already have forgiven each other, hence the passionate sex, but Cristina is going to have to make the first move this time, like Owen did in the premiere. It has to be a grand gesture on her part I think.

From the small snippet in the promo, of Cristina grabbing Owen to kiss him in the finale, it looks as though there is a reversal of the season premiere. He made the move in the SP, and it seems as though she will have to this week. In that way, I guess it's come full circle.

OOOH, more symbolism from the SP to come full circle as the opposite in the SF...
Owen rescued Cristina (carried her back into the hospital)--will Cris bring Owen back to SGH from somewhere (recruiters) or bring him back to her fan-less apartment?
After she falls, Cristina has the vision of herself and Mer still together as spinsters in old age. Does the SF end with both of them "settled" with their respective partners and happy for each other and themselves?
Cristina didn't give Owen permission to remove the icicle, but he did it to finish her treatment. Will she have the chance to DO something that Owen doesn't give permission for/doesn't expect (meet with the shrink, alone or with Owen)?
Owen invites Cristina to join him in the excitement of army trauma. Does Cristina invite Owen to stay for the excitement of surgical trauma at SGH?
Owen contemplated a moment, then kissed Cristina soundly before he left. We saw Cris grabbing and kissing Owen in the promo--how long does she contemplate that before she acts?
I'm almost positive Cristina will get in a "So?" somewhere in the SF!

Does the SF end with both of them "settled" with their respective partners and happy for each other and themselves? I forgot about the vision....In the SP Christina couldn't see herself settling down with anyone, and frankly she didn't believe Mer would ever really settle down with Der. Now Mer is settled, Izzie has her prince charming, so I think in the SF she will finally see that possibility for herself. C'mon Chris! Don't let Owen get away!!
